Keyword Winner: Keyword Research is Back with a Vengeance

keyword winner review scam

Scary image; great product. Go figure...

It hasn’t been that long since I started seeing Keyword Winner banners plastered all over different blogs.

Naturally, I got curious.

Add the word “keyword” to any tools, plus attached Dan Lew‘s name to it (DanLew.com), and you got my attention.

However, I couldn’t really find any good reviews out there - of course, I’d rather see someone else test-driving the product and telling me (hopefully the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth) how they did or didn’t like it.

Not such luck though, so here I go again - if you want to have something done well, do it yourself.

Why would I be interested in Keyword Winner, you ask, if one of my favorite products is Market Samurai - arguably the best keyword research software on the market?

Not only that, but I also use Scribe SEO - keyword research and content optimization tool from Copyblogger.

One thing at a time though.

Let me see how I like Keyword Winner first and then I’ll tell you which ones I’ll stick with.

And now you know what I know. Almost.

Of course, I played with this plugin a whole lot more after I finished the video and here are the things that are worth mentioning.

Keyword Winner: The Upsides

1. Every post can rank.

You might’ve heard me say before that not every post is meant to rank for a keyword. Some of them are just that - posts.

One of the latest posts I mentioned it in is this one: SEO Content Writing: How to Write a Title Pleaser That Ranks Well Too

The reason I am referring to that post is more than just to deep link my posts, although that’s always great to do, but the fact that the title of that post used to be “Title Pleaser: Kill Two Birds with One Stone”.

It’s a great post on how to optimize titles for both SEO and readers and all the title tricks I’ve learned along the way.

And now, thanks to Keyword Winner research that took me one whole minute, I optimized the title for the post about title optimization.

Now, I might actually get it ranked for something.

2. Takes no time.

In my world, if I can have a tool that comes up with quick keyword ideas on the spot, it’s a keeper.

3. SEO competition.

Gives you a good idea whether it’s a good idea (yes, I know I said “good idea” twice… three times now) to go for a keyword.

With its color-coded system that even my now 4 year-old can understand (Happy Birthday, Emma!) - red, yellow, green - it’s incredibly easy to determine what you are getting yourself into competition-wise. Green (Go!) is your best friend here.

4. Link building.

Wow, that’s quite a feature! It tells you how many links you’ll need to build (judging by what your competition has or doesn’t have) to rank for your keyword.

Granted, I’ve never seen a market where you need only one link to outdo your competitors, until I used Keyword Winner. But hey, if the search volume for those keywords is high enough, why not?

Makes your link building life that much easier.

5. First page Google ranking.

It’s never easy to rank on the first page of Google, but if you have the right combination of a low competition keyword and a decent search volume (otherwise, why would you want to rank for something that no one is looking for?), you just might get there a lot sooner.

Dan Lew promises as soon as 3 hours. Haven’t used the plugin long enough to get those kind of numbers, but I don’t see why not.

6. Great tag ideas.

I recently wrote a post on what tags really are and how to properly use them over at Kikolani.com:

Keyword Winner makes it a cinch to find the best tags and automatically add them to your post. This gives you even more chances to rank on search engines, this time for properly chosen tags.

Keyword Winner: The Downsides

1. Great tool, but…

I don’t believe this plugin is meant to be the final word on keyword research.

It’s great to find some great keywords quickly for any of your posts, but if you are doing keyword research for your blog in general, categories, pillar articles, I would still use Market Samurai - hands down.

Again, I use Keyword Winner to quickly look up possible keywords for my post title and take it from there - very needed function that no other tool has filled in so far.

2. Page competition rank checker.

So far, this is one of the features that needs some work, in my opinion.

This feature is supposed to screen your titles of already published posts to see if the title is anywhere close to ranking high on Google (I think it’ll show you if it ranks within the first 30 spots.)

Well, most of my posts came up as ranking #1…. Hooray for me? Not really.

They were ranking #1 for my entire title, not any particular keyword. At least I can get ranked for that. :)

But you know what, the good news is Dan Lew knows this is a bit of a downside and he’s working on it.

When working properly (and it actually did in some cases), it’s a great feature to have.

Keyword Winner vs Market Samurai

As I was listing my cons against the plugin and mentioned Market Samurai, I knew there was a question brewing in your head:

So which one do I prefer? Market Samurai or Keyword Winner?

Hands down, both of them.

Why?

To sell you both of them and make more money…

No, not really.

This is not a review of Market Samurai, but I’ll tell you this - it’s still the most thorough keyword research, SEO competition research, domain research, content research, and every other kind of blogging research there is kind of tool.

But I won’t use it for every post.

As efficient as it is, it still takes time. Again, the word “thorough” doesn’t go with “quick”, at least in this case.

Keyword Winner, on the other hand, gives me the flexibility to rank ANY of my posts for a keyword or two.

The best example of that is the one I gave you above:

“Title Pleaser: Kill Two Birds with One Stone”

vs

“SEO Content Writing: How to Write a Title Pleaser That Ranks Well Too”.

Huge difference. This kind of difference can mean zero search engine traffic and a steady stream of it 24/7.

Which one would be your preference? Exactly my point.

Side note: here’s another thumbs up for Market Samurai as a niche marketing research tool from dazzling Donna Fontenot.

Keyword Winner vs Scribe SEO

I’ve been an avid user of Scribe SEO by Copyblogger for a while now.

And now the time came for me to take Scribe SEO OFF MY Internet Marketing Tools LIST in favor of Keyword Winner.

Once again, this is not a review of Scribe SEO, so I am not going into great details as to why I am switching.

Suffice it to say, that Keyword Winner simply makes more sense.

It lets you optimize your post even before you start writing it - in the headline, whereas with Scribe SEO you write the post first, THEN the plugin will tell you which keywords your post happens to be optimized for.

The thing is though, with link building still playing such a prominent part in your search engine rankings, I can rank any post for any keyword I want to (within reason) with proper links and proper anchor text pointing to it - even if that keyword is not even mentioned in the body of the post.

Plus, weighing a monthly fee of $27-$97 (depending on the level) with Scribe SEO, and a one-time fee of currently only $47 with Keyword Winner… well, as you can tell we have a clear winner.

Marketing Takeaway

Is Keyword Winner for me? Definitely.

I am actually addicted to checking my titles with it now and it’s a good thing.

Is it for you? Absolutely.

I know you can benefit from it as much as I can and at such a low price point, I’d hate for you to not take advantage of it.

Keyword Winner

Love it or hate it? Comment to show me that you’re alive!

Thank you for the great review - the timing is perfect for me! I am a beginning blogger and and am researching both MS and KW. I have the trial version of MS and it seems to have a bug when using adwords account for keywords - does not complete the keyword search. They seem to know about this bug. Any idea how long they generally take to fix their issues?

Thanks again for a helpful review!

Good question, Suerae: usually they update the software pretty regularly, so my guess would be, it won’t take long.

Hey Ana,
Thank you for the great tips. I have been checking out Marketing Samurai for awhile and I had a good friend, who know SEO very well say its not as good as use to be. What ever that means.

The keyword tool I am starting to use is Keyword Elite 2. I have had it for 18 months and just now starting to get serious about it.

I know Ed Dale always creates good products. But the Keyword Winner looks like the next tool I am buying.

Love to hear feed back on what others think

Best wishes,

Daniel has really invented an amazing product! As far as your review is concerned I must say they are totally different tools. I’m sorry I have used Keyword Winner and you can’t really compare it. Keyword Winner is extremely powerful for optimizing blog posts and checking your rank position of your posts right in your blog dashboard, there is nothing out there as good as this, I totally love it and wouldn’t change it for the world!

Ana | Traffic Generation April 25, 2011 at 2:56 pm

Thanks for the thumbs up, Robert. :)

However, I can and did compare KW to other tools and apparently you’ve never used MS. I like them both for entirely different reasons.

Welcome to my blog, btw!

I was going to look into KW Winner a while back, but didn’t because I have Market Samurai and SEO Powersuite, on top of those, I have Clickbump SEO and SEOPressor…whew!

If I wasn’t already set, I’d definitely buy the plugin (still might for the support posts that link to my reviews, come to think of it).

Well done comparison! I now know substantially more about both products than I did prior to visiting your site. Guess I’m going to have to start following your blog…

I have a question, though. Given that KW is 1/3rd the price of MS, which would you recommend to get first? I’m a relative newbie, although I’ve had some minor success at SEO for my site — and then my main competition must have hired somebody to beat me out, ’cause that happened after about 3 months of ranking above him for most of the keywords that my students were using to find me (I always ask in my classes to see how they found me). Concurrently, I noticed that my classes are getting smaller, although with the economy taking it in the shorts, I hear on the grapevine that most of the instructors in my niche are seeing smaller classes.

I keep seeing that the “money is in the list” and I don’t have one for my main business — but I’m a one-hit wonder at this point. I don’t have any back-end thing to sell to my students (except that they do come back after 4 years for their license renewals). And the business is such that it has essentially no potential for automation, so when I quit teaching, the money quits coming in, instantly. Naturally, I’m thinking of other things to do…

I’d also like ways to boost my wife’s new travel agency business, and one thing we have come up with is having a contest with some substantial prizes (that would be of interest only to people who like cruises, for now). Trouble is that I don’t know how to set up such a contest, nor how to effectively track the results (how to track things like “tweets” for instance). The travel business has a bit more potential for back-end stuff, and maybe even a little passive income.

We are both suffering from a bit of overwhelm at this point, so I am also looking for some general “where to start” advice.

Hey TX, I’m not Ana, but I would like to take a stab at at least one thing you said here. :)

Yes, the money I in the list, but a good list should be worth far more then JUST money in the end.

Example: Say you have a 4 or even 5 digit list in the end, you start a new business, you could easily have a built in fan base before you even begin. ;-)

A big list might help with a new venture, or might not. For instance I have two businesses with two radically different clientele (yeah, I’m weird like that), and a big list from my violins & musical accessories business is not going to have very many people in it who are the least bit interested in getting a concealed handgun license. OTOH, there might be people on both lists interested in cruise travel, but again, I doubt if even a huge list of violin accessory and handgun license customers would do much good for my wife’s travel agency business. Lists are *not* fungible.

I am convinced that the size of the list is much less important than the quality of the list. That’s why Frank Rumbaskas was able to crush a dozen of the big names in an IM contest with only a 100K list. All the ‘gurus’ were using 500K++ lists, but all of them had the *same* names on them, whereas Frank had an organically-grown list that did not include a lot of IM-wannabees in it.

Which is all beside the point. I have NO list at all, so, by definition, the quality is also nonexistent. I’m starting from zero. My wife and I are thinking about doing a contest (with substantial prizes that would appeal to cruise-goers), but we don’t have any good idea of how to manage and track such a contest. So, if anybody has some suggestions on what tools to use or how to get something like that started, I’m listening!

Reply

Dennis Edell from Direct Sales Marketing April 23, 2011 at 6:42 pm

I never meant to imply quantity over quality. it would have to be a good list always.

And you’re right, a big list might help with a new venture, or might not. That’s actually were I might have stopped.

In all fairness, one cannot definitively state hat one would be interested in until presented with it.

Again though, that was just one example. My overall point being, having a backend product to sell now or not is irrelevant to whether or not to start a list.

Even if that was the #1 metric, wouldn’t you want the list in hand when you finally do get that product?

Ana | Traffic Generation April 23, 2011 at 7:47 pm

To answer your first question: if you can get Market Samurai right off that bat, do that. It’s a much superior softward and will do your business, whatever it is, a lot more good.

Your assessment of the list building is absolutely correct: the money is not in the list, it’s in your relationship with that list.

However, any business can potentially benefit from a list.

I recently did a list building week at TGC; lot’s of great info there. Check out this link: https://trafficgenerationcafe.online/list-building/

The rest of the question is pretty loaded, as you can imagine - it’s hart to talk about how to organize a contest, promote it, etc.

I could make a suggestion for an ebook by a very well-known blogger, Kristi Hines; it’s all about promotion. You can read more about it in this post: https://trafficgenerationcafe.online/blog-post-promotion/

I don’t know of any other great publications about promotion or how to run a contest, but this one should give you a good start.

Ana,

I use MS and I am still evaluating and learning how to use it. It takes time to use MS. But MS gives indepth and excellent results. On the other hand KW is a quickie which works really great.

My conclusion is just the same as yours, I use both side by side. Sometimes just KW (when I am in a hurry) and most of the times MS+KW.

Cheers,
Jane.

I mean we’re all affiliate marketers to an extent but I am sure you now what I mean?

Anyway I enjoyed watching you work with it and reading your conclusions. Sounds like it could be a time saver when one doesn’t want to use MS and a good additional tool not a replacement for MS.
