Google Plus Social Network: Is It Worth its Salt and Your Time?

Google Plus: get involved...

We are all busy people, no question about it.

Between constantly writing great content for our blogs, guest posting, networking, building relationships, blog hopping, managing all sorts of social media networks - you name it, our time is definitely spoken for.

Lo and behold, there’s another claim to our time out there: Google Plus social network.

So far, I’ve successfully avoided talking about this log in our eyes, but one thing is clear: we, the bloggers and business owners, cannot ignore it much longer.

I’ve been getting a lot of questions lately as to

  • whether I think Google Plus social network is here to stay;
  • is it here to stay or is it shaping up to be yet another Google flop;
  • how will it affect Facebook;
  • is it going to be useful for business?

No doubt in my mind, most of you are asking the same thing.

Out of some 500 invitations that I sent out to my Gmail contacts, about half are yet to join Google Plus Social. Just goes to show that a huge number of you are still thinking about it.

Let me see if I can help you reach some sort of conclusion by offering my educated guesses as to some of those question about Google Plus social network.

Google Plus Social Speculations

Truth is it’s too early to tell when it comes down to some of these questions.

Is Google Plus here to stay? Only time will show.

Will it kill Facebook as we know it?

In my opinion, Google Plus and Facebook fan page are two entirely different things; from what I can see so far, they can easily and peacefully co-exist. For the time being, anyway.

Google Plus Business Profiles: Google recently announced that they will be coming up with business profiles a lot sooner than originally expected; something to keep an eye fo.

Google Plus and SEO

Given my love for all things SEO, this is one aspect of Google plus social network that is extremely attractive.

Google +1 Button: I bet you Google +1, which is their version of Facebook Like button, is on its way to being worked into Google search engine ranking algorithm.

If you want to stay ahead of the game, I would highly suggest that you start displaying it all over your blog and encouraging your readers to “click it”.

Speaking of which, it would absolutely fantastic if you took about 1 second needed to click on that button - you can find it just about everywhere on my site.

Google Loves Google Plus: no surprise there really.

When you write about something on Google Plus and people in your circles google the topic, your comments and links are automatically displayed on the first page of results.

Doesn’t get any bigger than that, really. No backlinks, no promotion, no SEO - just free search engine traffic!

Google Plus Marketing Takeaway

My suggestion is to stop pondering whether Google Plus social is here to stay.

That’s where your potential audience is going and that’s where you should be.

Aren’t a part of Google Plus yet? Need an invite? I’d be happy to oblige; just let me know in the comments.

Don’t know much about it? Hey, none of us knew a thing about it a few short weeks ago; you’ll figure it out as you go.

Just don’t wait too long; Google Plus social network is developing rapidly and the sooner you start, the easier it’ll be.

Where do you stand with Google Plus social? Comment to show me that you’re alive!

Great stuff as usual Ana. I’ve recently jumped back in to Google+ and it has gotten a lot better. With the power of Google behind it, I find it hard to believe it won’t be around for a good while.

I was slacking a bit with G+ lately; need to get back on track…

I just recently signed up for Google +. I think it’s great but the problem is that it’s tedious to setup profiles and we are so used to Facebook. But I think I will give it another try because I find it will be more powerful for business because they provide the search engine.

Personally, I don’t use Google Plus at all since my friends uses Facebook.
Through I like Google+ Hangouts feature!
My opinion is that Google can’t be more popular than Facebook.

Hey Ana!

In my point of view, Google plus was neglected by people when it was launched, but now winds are blowing in opposite directions. Webmasters are now rushing towards Google plus and I feel that Google plus will be the new hope form them. :-)

Ana Hoffman October 30, 2012 at 8:10 pm

Not quite sure I see what you see, Joe - Google+ seems to be nicely populated and “settled” by now.

Interesting social network, hope Google success with this one ;)

Admittedly I am not much of an early adopter, even for Twitter I did not join their network when it was the new and fresh place to be at. What I question though is Google’s past failures in social media networks. We’ve seen it before with Orkut. If this Google plus button is somehow integrated as a ranking factor, its definitively going to get gamed.

People will always find ways to manipulate systems. We’ll have to wait and see.

Chris August 4, 2011 at 11:39 pm

I’ve got to be honest on Google+, I’m suffering a little bit from social media fatigue. I’m there, I’m signed up - but I’m struggling to find the time. It is worth it? Probably. Am I there because it is Google? Absolutely. I’m sure I’ll get there but boy I’m exhausted…zzzzz

Ana August 5, 2011 at 4:05 am

LOL! I know what you mean, Chris.

Martin August 4, 2011 at 9:06 pm

I’m thinking the reason half of your sent invites went unused is because people don’t yet know if it’s worth their time. Google+ still has ways to go till it can reach Facebook as an authority social leader. Facebook grew slow and steady, Google wants too much and too fast.

Ana August 9, 2011 at 12:22 pm

Perhaps you’re right.

Sharon August 4, 2011 at 7:20 am

Hi Ana

I’m new to your site, new to internet marketing and definitely new to Google Plus. I came across you on Yaro’s site and joined your list because I like your style, it’s engaging.

Anyway, I would like an invite to Google Plus, then I’ll go back and read your post that gives a tutorial. There is so much to learn and keep up with, so it’s great to have people like you who know a thing or two about this industry.

Thank you
Sharon

Hi, I joined Google+ a few weeks ago and am still trying to figure it out. I recently posted a picture of my dog as “Public.” Who all can see it? And how can I see other “Public” posts. Thanks!

Ana August 2, 2011 at 8:47 pm

When you post publicly, Patrick, people who’ve added you to one of their circles will see your update in their stream.

Also, content you share publicly may show up in search results.

Some of the posts you see in your steam have been shared publicly - you can see that by the date stamp.

Ana August 2, 2011 at 4:13 am

You’ll get the hang of it soon enough, Argie. :-)

Argie Monroy August 2, 2011 at 5:12 am

I just hope so Ana. By the way, are there any plugins for Wordpress which turns the commenters link to a dofollow one after having made some comments approved?

Ana August 2, 2011 at 9:11 pm

Yes, Argie - it’s called Nofollow Free; I use it on TGC as well.

Elle August 1, 2011 at 3:24 pm

Did I get an invite from you? If not..send me one. I am finally on google + and building my circles…still learning. I’m going to be clicking that plus button everywhere…if you happen to visit my site…click it for me please! lol.

Thank you very much :p

Ana August 2, 2011 at 3:57 am

Will do, Elle. :-)

David August 1, 2011 at 3:04 pm

Once again thanks for the great information Ana. The way social networking is going this seems to be the right move. My only concern is that Google controls so much of the net already that they could potentially change the whole shape of social networking. However, having said that, perhaps joining now might be the way to go. So If you could spare an invite to the little guy, I’ll take one as well.

Thanks again.

I agree with you, David and that seems a valid concern. Will send you an invite.

I just added you up and thanks.

It’s cool following an authority. :-)

Thanks Chukwuka.
