Blog Audit Friday: Ask Oliver And You Shall Receive

158 Flares 158 Flares ×

blog audit friday oliver tausendFridays are always exciting for most of us (I say for “most” because there is always a Friday pooper in the crowd; go figure).

For me and my Traffic Generation Cafe blog, it’s becoming an even more special day, since that’s when I publish my new series “Blog Audit Friday”.

In case you missed my last Friday’s blog audit of CleverMarketer.com, what I do in this series is find a blog that I feel like tearing apart, looking at all nooks and crannies, and making suggestions on how to make it better.

This week’s volunteer is my good friend Oliver Tausend.

AskOliverTausend.com

From the laptop of: Ana Hoffman

Dear Oliver:

I’ve told you before in private and now let me shout out to thousands of my readers how much I appreciate your friendship, endless support, and constantly putting people first in your network marketing business.

It’s a truly rare commodities these days and I appreciate you showing it to all of us on a daily basis how it should be done.

This blog audit is my little token of appreciation of who you are.

General Stats

URL: http://www.askolivertausend.com/

Title: Believe it or not, you don’t really have one (will explain later).

Description: See above (first one for me, for sure).

Google PageRank: 0

Alexa Rank: 95,314

Indexed pages in Google:1070

Domain Age: 6 months

First Impression

What I did first was simply took a look at your blog like any visitor would, to see whether it looks good enough for me to stay.

1. What I liked about your blog

The first thing I notice is your smile - a huge plus; I definitely like you already.

Your image of holding a piggy bank on your tie is also very unique and makes me want to take a closer look at it.

I like your very clean gray background; definitely emphasizes the content and is great for conversion.

2. Design changes to consider

My eyes were inundated with many small things, like a zillion of social media icons and the Wibiya bar at the bottom.

As far as Wibiya bar is concerned, I feel partially responsible - I know I turned many of my readers to using it since I had it on my blog for a while. However, I did decide that the stats it was showing did not nearly match the amount of irritation it caused my readers - I would definitely take it off.

So, let’s make a dirty laundry list here - my recommendations for your home page:

  • get rid of the majority of social icons; leave only the ones you know your readers use the most. Remember, too many choices = no choice made.
  • in your header, “Welcome to Oliver Tausend’s Blog” is in bigger font than the tagline underneath. I would switch them around - make the latter bigger than the former, since your readers are more interested in what this blog is about.
  • above your sidebar I see this: “Welcome to Oliver Tausend’s Blog: Welcome to the one-stop-shop for your success in your MLM Network Marketing business. Free MLM Network Marketing Mentoring through education and teamwork.” I would get rid of it; 3 welcomes above the fold are 2 too many.
  • your opt-in form is not very appealing and doesn’t draw much attention. Your call to action is repetitive and not well formulated. I wouldn’t opt in.
  • I like your sidebar widgets, like recent posts, comments, etc. It’s a great way to engage your readers. However, the entries are very blend. I would change the font for the names and/or post titles to make them stand out more.
  • your footbar is a wasted space right now. It’s a bit blend and doesn’t provide much content I would want to click on. This is valuable real estate you are missing out on!

3. Home Page Load Speed

Great news here: your page loading time is 7-8 seconds, which is definitely a good number for a blog!

4. Navigation

Your navigation is uncluttered and easy.

My only concern is that your tab names are not very self-explanatory and wouldn’t entice me to click on them.

I would suggest taking a look at your Google Analytics account to see how your readers are navigating through your website; whether they are using your navigation tabs. You might generate more clicks and decrease your bounce rate if you change the titles.

5. You have no home page!

As I mentioned before, this is a first one for me.

When I add your URL to my browser, it redirects me to http://www.askolivertausend.com/2010/05/generate-leads-mlm-business/.

So essentially, it means you have no home page.

That’s not good at all - not for your users and certainly not for the search engines.

From the user’s point of you: I come to what I think is your home page and I see a post dated back to May. What I immediately think is “this blog hasn’t been updated in month; I am out of here!

Here’s what your blog looks like in search engines:

blog audit friday search result image

Not something I would ever click on.

So whatever your reasoning behind this was, I would strongly suggest you change your home page to home page.

6. Outgoing links open in the same window

Many of your links, for instance the ones that lead to your social profiles or “Vote for my blog” button in your sidebar, when clicked on, open in the same window.

That’s one of the most sure ways to loose your readers!

Once someone goes to check you out on Facebook, they are very likely to get distracted and never come back to your blog.

To prevent that, make sure you add to ALL your outgoing links this code target=”_blank” - this will force the links to open in a new window, while your blog window will remain open.

Content/Niche Analysis

1. Are you in a good niche?

From what I can see, your niche is clearly defined as MLM Network Marketing with Personal Development angle.

Looks like you have pretty good readership, so I’d say you are in a good niche, Oliver!

2. Niche keywords

Are there any juicy keywords you are currently ranking for?

Yes, as a matter of fact there is.

You are currently ranked as number 17 for “how to generate leads” (here’s one more in-content link with the right anchor text for you :) ) - quite a competitive and high -trafficked keyword, so congrats, Oliver.

Now we need to get you on the first page for that keyword or better yet, in the first 4 spots.

I will email you a specially prepared report that will explain step by step what you need to do to improve your search engine rankings for that keyword - something I usually reserve for my paid clients only. :)

SEO Analysis

1. Meta Tag Structure

This information is mostly used by search engines to determine your rankings; it’s also what you see in the search engine results pages (SERPs).

Your biggest problem with metadata (your meta title and meta description) is duplicating them ruthlessly.

Side note: if you need to learn more about metadata, read this great post by Tia Peterson on WeBlogBetter.com:

For instance, the following title “How To Generate Leads For Your MLM Business | Oliver Tausend’s Blog” is used on 38 different pages!

This description “How To Generate Leads For An MLM Business: Generating leads for MLM businesses is no more difficult than Paint By Numbers.” is also found on 38 different pages.

It’s extremely important for your SEO efforts to use unique titles and description for EACH page and post.

2. Heading Tag Structure

These are headings and subheading you use in your posts, sidebars, etc.

Here’s your current tag structure:

[h2] How To Generate Leads For Your MLM Business
            [h3] Related posts
[h3] 68 Responses to “How To Generate Leads For Your MLM Business”

            [h3] Pages
            [h3] Stay In Touch
            [h3] More

What it should be for your home page - ideally:

  • H1: Blog’s name
  • H2: Your blog’s tagline - should be keyword-rich
  • H3: Your recent posts
  • H4: related content in the sidebar, like the heading of an “about” widget.
  • H5: Unrelated headings in your sidebar, footer, etc.

What it should be for your posts:

  • H1: post / page title
  • H2′s and H3′s: subheadings and sub-subheadings
  • H4: your blog’s name, and possibly related widgets
  • H5: same as above: sidebars etc.

The best post ever on heading structure:

Side note: if you want to check your own blog structure, just go to http://validator.w3.org/, add your URL to validate your code and make sure you check the “Show Outline” box - that’s what will give you your blog outline at the very bottom of your page, along with all HTML code errors you’d better fix!

3. Images

You have waaaaay too many images on your “home page”, Oliver - 123 to be precise. My home page has 24 and it’s still considered a lot.

The biggest problem with your images from SEO point of view though is the fact that most of them are missing an ALT tag.

Take a look at this post to learn more about ALT tags and how to use them (includes a video from Matt Cutts of Google):

Link Structure

1. Internal Linking

You link way too much to your feed, Oliver.

Your most linked-to page is:

http://www.askolivertausend.com/feed/ followed by:

http://www.askolivertausend.com/comments/feed/

Here’s the advice I gave to Heather of CleverMarketer.com in my previous audit; this is the same problem she had with her blog:

Solution: I don’t think you are intentionally linking to your RSS feed page. The problem is that your RSS feed button shows up on every single page of your blog. Don’t worry; I am not going to tell you to get rid of it – of course you want to encourage your readers to subscribe! However, you can tell the search engines to nofollow those links. The easiest way to do it is to check your theme to see if it offers the option to nofollow certain links). For example, this is what it looks like in the Thesis theme, which I use on my blog:

thesis wordpress theme feed link

2. Incoming Linking

You certainly have a good number of links pointing to your blog, Oliver; your great commenting and networking efforts are definitely paying off.

The only advice I would give you is to start building links from higher PR pages that relate to your niche.

Marketing Takeaway:

Well, I think it’s enough for today, don’t you think? :)

And now, my dear readers, it’s your turn. Go to http://www.askolivertausend.com/ right now and let Oliver know what you think of his blog in general and point out the things you would change. Oliver and I are listening!

This is amazing…and clearly I have LOT of work to do right now. Have a great evening. These audits are great resources for us as we try to figure out how to get our bogs performing better.

If you are on my list, Christi, I’ll start doing them again for my subscribers - random drawing once a month.

Christi Johnson January 18, 2012 at 9:37 am

I have been on your list for a little while, so I’m glad to know this. I’ll be checking like I always do. Thanks, Ana. :)

Jym November 26, 2010 at 3:29 am

WOW Ana!

Great idea. You certainly have the background to pull this off.

I’d love to be a victim of your blog audit Friday sometime. There’s plenty that needs straightening out!

Love what you’ve said about Oliver’s blog, especially the observation that his networking is paying off so well. I see him in a lot of places!

All the best,

Jym

Ana Hoffman November 28, 2010 at 6:40 pm

Hello Jym,

Yes, it was actually a great experience for me as well. Oliver is so nice for allowing me to do it for him. He’s such a busy person but He gladly take my suggestions.

Have a nice day,

Ana

Ingrid Abboud November 21, 2010 at 8:59 pm

Ana,
This is my first time reading one of your blog audits. Don’t know how I missed them before.

What a frickin’ brilliant idea for a post - and coming from you - one should be so grateful as to have you audit them :) .

It’s thorough and beyond helpful. While reading each point you left Oliver, I tried to see whether it also relates to my blog. And I’m afraid to say that many do :( .

Thank you for sharing such an insightful post. I dare say that I would want you to audit mine but am too scared of all the wrongs that are probably present lol.

I’m off to read Tia’s post now.

Thanks again. Amazing job. A down right honest and complete analysis!
Cheers

Ana Hoffman November 22, 2010 at 7:51 pm

Hello Ingrid,

I’m glad you made it this time. Actually this is the second blog audit I did. That is really the purpose of doing this, for readers to also assess and evaluate themselves and their own blog sites. I’m glad you find it really valuable.

Carry on,

Ana

Hector Cuevas November 20, 2010 at 5:16 pm

Great blog audit Ana..

No homepage - that’s not good. That’s most likely a plugin that’s causing the page to redirect. It happened to me once.

Oliver has a lot of work to do, but I’m sure he appreciates it

talk soon
Hector

Ana Hoffman November 21, 2010 at 4:56 pm

Hello Hector,

Thanks for the comment. It’s indeed a lot of work for Oliver but I believe he’s glad about it.

Have a great day,

Ana

Kimi November 20, 2010 at 6:01 am

Interesting audit, Ana :)

I have known about my meta description and blog title could be better.

But i don’t want to change it, as i may loose traffics what i have now :(

Thanks for this cool blog audit!

Ana Hoffman November 20, 2010 at 1:38 pm

Kimi:

You absolutely won’t loose any traffic when you change your meta information - it is used ONLY by search engines and can only help you.

Definitely do it.

Ana

Kimi November 20, 2010 at 2:18 pm

Ana,

Will i not loose traffic too when i change blog title?

Thanks for the reply!

Kiesha November 19, 2010 at 3:17 pm

Wow! What an extensive analysis. You’ve just reminded me of how much I have on my to-do list. Anyway, thanks for mentioning Tia’s post - it was an awesome one, wasn’t it? :)

Ana Hoffman November 19, 2010 at 6:20 pm

Hello Kiesha,

I’m glad you feel that way. Yes, Tia’s post is great.

Thanks for dropping by,

Ana

Hey Anna,
It has been awhile since I have stopped by and I can see that was a mistake.

Great insight on the issues you pointed out and the way you offers suggestions.

It is always a great idea to get others opinions on what you do

Peter Fuller MBA November 19, 2010 at 3:03 pm

Hey Ana

Another great review.

Some of your comments about current tag structure are a little tricky to implement since using those tags are determined by the original blog theme designer, and they are not that easy to change.

Any suggestions.

Peter

Ana Hoffman November 19, 2010 at 3:16 pm

You are entirely correct, Peter.

That’s one of those things that I would outsource.

However, it does need to be done since it can really be quite important for SEO efforts.

I can give you my tech guru’s email address; he is great and extremely reasonable.

Ana

Peter Fuller MBA November 19, 2010 at 6:30 pm

Hey Ana

For my purposes I know how to do it.

What holds me back is if an upgrade occurs for my theme and I want the upgrade then I have to go and make the changes again.

Maybe I will do it just as a test and see how it goes.

Steve Stillwater November 19, 2010 at 2:58 pm

Greant analysis, Ana. I’m going to school on this. Just when I think I am getting my web site in shape, I get humbled by seeing how much work remains in front of me.
Steve

Ana Hoffman November 19, 2010 at 6:27 pm

Hello Steve,

There’s always a room for improvement for all of us. That’s why it is important that we never stop learning and embracing changes. Don’t worry because I also feel the same way most of the time.

All the best,

Ana

Evelyn @ Become a Healthier You November 19, 2010 at 8:11 am

Ana,
This is a very helpful audit. I don’t have a home page, now I need to add that. You also mention some other things that I think I will check into myself.

I’ve visited Oliver’s site before and I really love his photo, but I got caught up with the Wibiya bar and the social media icons. I’ll be back Oliver! ;)

You did a great job and I’m sure Oliver appreciates this audit. :)

Take care,

Evelyn

Ana Hoffman November 19, 2010 at 9:12 am

Thanks for the feedback, Evelyn.

I am sure Oliver appreciates another reader’s opinion; please do visit him again in the new future.

I would definitely recommend not delaying setting up your home page; it’s an extremely important part of your online presence.

Ana

Evelyn November 20, 2010 at 7:23 am

Thanks Ana!

I will get working on my home page this weekend.

Thanks for the great information that you offer!

Patricia@lavenderuses November 19, 2010 at 7:16 am

Hi Ana

This is a great thing that you are doing for your readers. I am learning heaps just by reading the Friday audit posts. being relative new to blogging it means I can avoid the things you are pointing out and hopefully keep my site clean and google friendly :-)

Ana Hoffman November 19, 2010 at 8:57 am

Learning from somebody’s mistakes does make a lot of sense, doesn’t it, Particia?

I am actually learning a lot from doing the audits myself, believe it or not; there is always something I find on my own blog that makes me say “I can’t believe I never noticed before!”

Have a great weekend.

Kelly Be A Fun Mum November 19, 2010 at 6:58 am

Loving this post because it makes general advice oh-so-practical and personal.

Ana Hoffman November 19, 2010 at 8:55 am

Good morning, Kelly; thanks for coming by - hope you were able to learn a thing or two.

Ana

Oliver Tausend November 19, 2010 at 6:53 am

Hi Ana,

wow thank you. I am blown away.

I knew I have some issues with my blog, some of them pointed out by you, e.g. the missing home page.

Guess what, I was clicking on every available link in my dashboard in order to figure out how to fix that.

Then I gave up because I realized that it’s good for the ranking of the keyword “how to generate leads” if this page is the most frequented one - or am I mistaken ? And I generated leads through this post also ;-)

Anyway, you provide more than one reason to fix that. Chances are I need a little bit (or a little bit more) support to fix the issues - some of the aspects you point out come as easy to me as “Bohemian villages” as we say in Germany, hope you know what I mean. By the way, doesn’t matter if it’s in English or German, they use the same jargon.

You gave me a lot of food for thought, that’s great. I will let your advice sink in and write down some questions I have, also with regard to the bounce rate.

I’m definitely looking forward to the specially prepared SEO report.

A last word to my networking and commenting efforts: I wouldn’t be where I am today if you hadn’t invited me to your Facebook tribe back in July, that gave my blog and me a boost. So thanks again for including me in your community !

Be blessed.

Take care

Oliver

Ana Hoffman November 19, 2010 at 7:58 am

It’s definitely my pleasure, Oliver!

As far as your home page is concerned: you are right, your situation did help you rank for the keyword! I didn’t want to point it out hoping it would slide by unnoticed. :)

Reason for that - you still need to set your real home page; you might be missing out on more than gaining.

The fix for that lies with your domain registrar and/or your host - it might even be the same company. Somehow you have a 301 redirect set to your home page and that’s where you fix that.

Let me know as more questions might come up; I am happy to help when I know the answer.

I am having a bit of trouble saving your report to my computer so I can send it to you; worse comes to worse, I’ll just copy and paste it for you. :)

Talk soon.

Heather C Stephens November 19, 2010 at 6:38 am

Ana-you hit this one out of the park, again! :) (Don’t you feel lucky, Oliver?)

I’m still working on the changes you suggested for my blog last week, but I appreciate the extra clarification on the H tags. I just checked out that post you linked to, so I could be more clear on them, but what I’m not sure of is how do I change the settings on my blog to update my H tags? I know how to do it within the body of a post, but beyond that I’m clueless.

What I have discovered in going through this process is that some of the settings in my All in One SEO Pack were set to show the blog title on every page. I wonder if I’m the only one, or if that’s the default. I can’t imagine that I would have messed with it when I was setting up my blog, but who knows. It’s all a blur.

Thanks Ana, and thank you Oliver for being the teacher in the moment!

Heather

Oliver Tausend November 19, 2010 at 6:59 am

Hi Heather,

I do feel lucky :-) I like to be the teacher and the student at the same time…

It dawns on me that I have more or less the same questions you have.

Take care

Oliver

Ana Hoffman November 19, 2010 at 7:51 am

Hi, Heather -

As I mentioned before, your blog looks spectacular!

I don’t use All in One SEO pack on my blog - my Thesis theme does all the SEO for me, but from what I remember showing blog title is a default setting; you do need to change it though.

As far as H tags is concerned, believe it or not, I can’t help you much further on that one.

It all depends on your theme and how it’s set up - your theme is what determines your H tags.

So, you have 2 choices - either way back up your blog first!

1. Just go into your theme files and see if you can find where H tags are located

or

2. Pay someone $30 or so to fix those technical things for you. :)

Ana

Heather C Stephens November 19, 2010 at 8:43 am

Thanks for the information, Ana. I was guessing there was an easy way to do it, that I hadn’t discovered yet. I think I’ll leave editing the code to the pros so I don’t really mess up my blog. I bet rent a coder or some place like that would have someone who could do it for reasonable. :) Hadn’t thought of it, so thanks for the suggestion.

I think I’ll be checking out a paid theme sooner than later. I wasn’t seeing the need until now.

Thanks for all the teaching!
