The 5 Fastest Ways To Burn Out Your Email List

Building a list of email subscribers is probably the smartest thing you can do for your business. Before I teach you all about how to burn out your list, let’s talk about the benefits of having one.

Having a list gives you the ability to send traffic to any web page on the internet. Traffic will no longer be an issue if you can control where you send your visitors.

Also, whenever you want to offer something new, you have a list of people that you can get ideas from by surveying them. So, you avoid putting out something that isn’t going to work out.

Now that you know why having a list is so great, let’s talk about..

The 5 Fastest Ways To Burn Out Your Email List

email marketing burn your listThis post is, obviously, talking about the things you SHOULDN’T DO when performing email marketing; but you knew that already. Let’s get started…

#1. Promo After Promo After Promo

This has to be the one I hate the most. Unless I signed up to a discount list like Groupon, Living Social or TigerDirect, getting email offers everyday is really annoying. People usually join email newsletters to get more information of the stuff they like, NOT to be sold something with every email.

Tip: Make sure to offer a lot of great value first before you ever think about making any offers to your subscribers. This will help you lower your unsubscribe rate dramatically.

#2. Recommending Crappy Products

If you want an unresponsive list, send them offers to crappy products that you wouldn’t use yourself. This is almost as bad as sending email offers everyday.

Tip.. If you’re doing affiliate marketing, focus on promoting only those products that you have actually used. Talking about your experiences and results from using a product or service is not selling, it’s sharing - so do more of that.

#3. Not Enough Free Value

Even if you don’t email your subscribers promotions every time you send en email; NOT sending anything at all can also messed up the relationship you have and cause your people to not CARE when you send them stuff.

Tip.. Have a few emails already set up in your autoresponder and space them out for a few weeks, or even months. This will ensure that anyone that joins your list at any given time will have some really good stuff coming their way without you having to do anything. Then, when you send them live email broadcasts with your offers, they’ll be so used to opening your emails, that it will be easier to open those, too.

Note from Ana: take a look at this post and let me know what you think:

#4. Misleading Subject Lines

You want to get me off your list? Send me an email that says, “I’m Dying” and then say… “No, I was just kidding, but now that you’re here…”

Misleading subject lines will get people jumping off your newsletter faster than you can say, “unsubscribe here” - But, really.. it’s practically an invitation to your unsubscribe button.

Here’s the tip.. Don’t do it! Make all your email subject lines relevant and consistent with the message inside the email.

#5. Pointless Emails

Ever get one of those emails where half way down you’re thinking, “where is this going?”. Yea, those emails are pointless and annoying; and they’ll make people unsubscribe from your list.

Tip.. Have a point and get to the point as fast as you can. Fast internet connections have made people really impatient, so make sure that whatever you have to say, you say it quick.

On to you…

Keep in mind that if you’re currently doing these things, you’re literally burning money. You’re email list will be the most important asset of your business, so treat them well.

Questions: How do you keep people on your list happy? Are you taking care of your subscribers like you’d like to be taken cared of? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.

And as always, you don’t have to share this post, but do it anyway - Ana and I would really appreciate it. :)

My blog is new and I’m not thinking about starting a newsletter for quite some time. But I have been a subscriber to many subscriptions and I’ve kept a keen eye on the content, sending ratio, headlines etc, so when I do start my own I’ll know a little more about it.
Some newsletters I’m subscribed to Ive noticed regurgitate the same ‘stuff’ after a couple of months and sometimes even sooner! There are some which as soon as I see who they’re from I delete immediately based on the previous emails I have read! I agree this is an area which needs as much attention from the marketer as their blog or website content, it’s so easy to get it wrong, which is why I’m not venturing down this road til I know I can get it right! Good post, thankyou! :)

I’ve seen them all and that’s why I rarely subscribe to email lists now expect for the few that mail once in a week or a two weeks like Michelle Adams and Daniel Scocco ;-) .

It really is very easy to waste all your list-building efforts falling in one or more of these mistakes.
When I was more into mailing lists, I remember that committing especially #1 and #3 were there every time, and I was checking nervously who would unsubscribe following every message.
It’s difficult to do this right, in particular because, as you mention, every mistake is potential money lost.

Hector…

Great post, love the reverse approach of putting up some warnings on what not to do…

I tend to find that I unsubscribe from lists where 1 - the titles are irrelevant, 2 - the emails are boring and 3 - I know it’s a pitch before I open it.

Autoresponder lists are a great way to build a relationship, share more about your angle on things, and of course share links and products too, but not to the exclusion of genuine value sharing.

Thanks for putting this one together and thanks Ana for hosting.

All the best,

Jym

Let me throw my 2 cents into this one, Rob:

I would usually contact the owner and ask if they would let me review their product or I take advantage of their money-back guarantee. :)

However, personally I only recommend the products I actually use, which usually means I paid for them first - naturally.

Hey Rob,

Sorry for the delayed response.. I have to agree with Ana. Only offer products you have actually used before.

If you don’t want to spend a fortune, you can easily contact the owner or buy it. If it doesn’t help you in any way, shape or form - simply send it back. There’s no reason to keep something you’re not getting any benefit from.

When you get a bigger audience, product owners will be contacting you and sending YOU free copies - that’s the fun part. Persistence is key.

A small addition to #1, don’t just send freebie after freebie either. I’m on one list like that and its annoying. No actual content ever, just freebies mostly, and the occasional cost-based ad.

Freebies are nice, but c’mon now.

Since you’re wondering. She was a friend once, I stick around to see just when she might send something else…it’s been 3yrs now.

Great post Hector!

You’re so right on all accounts. I think it’s super important to provide value with posts a lot more often than offers. Too many offers and people start to leave. Too many BAD offers and people will run!

Thanks Ana for sharing this. I love Hector’s writing style.

Hey Lisa,

Thanks .. I would be careful about sending your subscribers to other people, mainly because they got on your list for a reason; whether that was to get your freebie, or because you provide great content..

if you’re sending them to my blog, then go ahead.. LOL - no, but seriously…

We have to try our best to be viewed as an expert, and build trust - and the best way to do that is by showing our people that we have something of value to share with them..

hope that helps

Hi Hector,

I like to kill my list with content. Offer value, become valuable.

As for burning out lists misleading subject lines and endless pitching stand right near the top. Receiving endless pitches is like watching a TV show with endless commercial after commercial.

If you aren’t recording the show you are going to switch the channel eventually, no matter how much you enjoy the show. Same deal with your guru of choice. They can offer value out the ying-yang but if they endlessly pitch they’re ditched.

Thanks for sharing and have a powerful day!

I am scared of my list! Inevitably I always get unsubscribers - people there just for the free thing I sent them for signing up. Anyway, I always try to provide free content throughout the email and if I am going to sell them on something I sell on the PS. Or, I will send out a few non-sales emails and then that earns me the right to send one with an offer. And I have one weekly newsletter with all my posts for the week.

Hey Susan,

oohh Fear.. Here’s what you can do.

Make it crystal clear in the first email you sent out, what you’re going to be talking about, how often you’ll be emailing them and why they should look forward to your emails.

Once that expectation is set, you’ll feel better about sending promotional emails and those who unsubscribe, weren’t gonna buy from you anyway so there’s no need to worry about them.

Hope that helps
