I’ve also been using Simple Trackback Validation on my blog since the start, and I love it.

Will be passing this post on. I don’t know that people really understand a trackback to begin with, and so this will help. Everyone should have that plugin installed whether they understand the concept or not (kind of like taking vitamins and minerals). :)

Cheers,

Ana, this a great, thorough critique. No wonder it took you two days! I think the default behavior for WordPress is to make sidebar headings h3. You make an interesting point, though, as once I discovered I was ranking quite highly for one of my sidebar headings awhile back. LOL I never thought to use h4 and h5, but it makes sense to use them for sidebar stuff and reserve h3 for post titles on the home page.

    Good stuff.

  • How Twitter Traffic Generation Became My Largest Source of Referral Traffic: Lessons to Share
    Hi Ana,

I have found Twitter to be among the top referrers for my blog, as well. It started to level off at some point when I stopped intentionally growing followers, but the interesting thing is that the level of traffic remains consistent. (Plus, the more followers you have the more you get even w/o trying).

I use SproutSocial, which is a premium service, mainly because of its demographics reporting and interesting contact management tool. I also like HootSuite, and the regular new Twitter, too.

I had seen MarketMeTweet before when it was first launched and it looks like it’s finally become affordable, so I have gone ahead and purchased a monthly to see what happens (for my clients, mainly).

    Cheers!

  • Need For Site Speed: Practical Guide For The Average Blogger
    Hi Ana!

Like Tommy, W3 Total Cache sped up my site a great deal. I love that tool.

I would also suggest that people upload images that they use for advertising or for their posts to their own sites. That little change seems to make a big different in timing as well.

And using tools like the javascript-based Delicious and Facebook sharing buttons with serious consideration. I love them, but boy, the time it takes (especially for Delicious) to load can be a killer. Better to ditch the script they provide and just copy the image to your site and then do manual sharing code. If that makes any sense at all! lol

    Cheers,
    Tia

Good advice about linking to an About Me page or a new, About Me sort of blog. It’s a very good strategy for individuals who have started a blog already under a different brand name.
  • Mistery of Google PageRank Solved?
Hi Ana - Yes, definitely agree with you. It actually makes my stomach turn a little when I see developers and others telling (literally, telling) newbies to skip blogs with PR1 or 2, or even 3. One in particular comes to mind and it makes me so mad that he does that.

PR comes when it comes. I’ll tell you what I’ve not seen - I’ve not seen a brand new blog ever with a PR5, 6, or 7, that’s for sure. Some sites have been around for years and their age is a huge contributing factor. Case in point is that my original blog which is almost 3 years old now is still at PR2 even though I took almost 13 months and did absolutely nothing - not a single inbound link or a single post, while BizChickBlogs is PR2 and has been around since the end of February.

So, like I said, it comes when it comes and it comes by just being reputable.

    Cheers,
    Tia

‘Lo, Ana!
As usual, an informative and very useful post. You’re raisin’ the bar for the rest of us, m’dear!
As luck would have it, I’ve been noticing a rise in trackbacks the last week, so I’ve been monitoring them closely. However, I haven’t yet gotten around to checking out the source sites. I’m betting that I’ll find the majority of them are spam.
I’ve been a strong advocate of Akismet, because it’s caught a lot of spam before it could clutter up my blog. But it appears to do absolutely nothing about trackbacks. So I’ve dropped Akismet in favor of GASP and STBV. I’ll watch it for a few days, but if Justin recommends it, I’m sure it’s solid. Thanks for the heads up!

Hello Doc,

Nice to hear from you again. I’m glad you are now using GASP and STBV. I am confident that it will work well, better than Akismet.

Thanks for stopping by,

Ana

Great find again Ana, I too noticed a lot of fake trackbacks on other blogs!

I actually found a website which sells a wp plugin that does this exact thing(I mean sending false trackbacks).
Oh well I think as anti-spam plugins get better spammer tools get better too.

Hi Ana,
Hope your day is going well so far.

YaY! Another super useful plugin for me to add to my collection:)!

I’ve actually noticed a small increase in the amount of spammy trackbacks these last few weeks, so this plugin may be just want I need. Because if I see another one of those tricky credit repair people and their friends linking to another one of my posts again - it’s not gonna’ be pretty lol.

In any case, I just installed it now.
Thanks so much for bringing this little trackback spam annihilator to my attention :) .

Cheers

Hmmm I started reading your post and as an early adopter of GASP did not see an increase in trackback spam so there I was wondering why this is so, only to discover that I have been using the Simple Trackback Validation plugin anyway. Well at least I can support Justin’s findings. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

I’ve actually used GASP for a few days now and I must say I’m pretty pleased with it but yeah, trackbacks from junk blogs still manage to get through. I was wondering what I can do to eliminate this until I stumble across your blog again! Another very useful tip there Ana :) I’m so gonna do a review of comment spam plugins soon

Hi Ana,

I’m quite lost with those trackbacks. LOL! I had no idea what their purpose was until stumbling upon that post. So overall it is a great thing and not so great, because of the abuse, you mentioned. Spammers are without doubt the worst thing that can happen to a blog and unfortunately if they want - they often find ways to ruin everything. Whether it be through the comments or those trackbacks, you have whole lot more work to do because of them. Some nice resources you have mentioned. Will see if the following plug-ins are compatible with my blog.

Hey Ana

Another technique spammers use is automated blogs with automated linking to other blogs based on certain criteria. The plugin they use is very similar to the “Related Posts” plugin except it looks for related posts on other blogs.
