Hi Ana,

You can have twitter quality with quantity, and your post proves this.

From my experience #6 and #7 are the best ways to get interested twitter followers, meaning live bodies who will spread your influence and stop by your blog. Twitter followers who don’t do these things are numbers. Numbers work well in the social proof department but it’s kind of tough to build a relationship with a number.

Automate certain processes but make sure to retweet frequently and answer every @mention personally. Also engage by tweeting questions frequently. Fellow tweeters will be willing to answer questions if you ask.

I have 5 twitter accounts set up myself. It helps to broaden your reach as you can only get so much accomplished with a single account. Leverage. Just be sure to send out a few engaging tweets and RTs from those accounts so others know that you aren’t a bot. People get more attention than machines.

BTW I agree with Heather’s statement and your response. You are uber-orgainized and I also have a minimalist work desk, consisting of a lap top. The less clutter the better is my motto.

Thanks for sharing your insight Ana. Have a prospering day :)

  • Why All Your Make Money Blogging Efforts Will Fail Without This
    Hi Ana,

List building is relationship building so it stands near the top of Must-Do activities for a blogger. I neglected it to my detriment. First because I didn’t feel like paying for a service, then even after I found out about Mailchimp I didn’t feel the effort of learning how to set up my campaign was worth it. That was a No-No that I own.

If you’re a home based entrepreneur I suggest starting a list from day 1. Trust is generally established over a series of days, weeks, months. Building a list can shorten this time for most because your subscribers receive a steady flow of your top notch content delivered directly to their inbox. Seeing great supplied by someone on a consistent basis makes you say “I like that dude, or dudette” and that’s pretty much the beginning of the money making process.

1 - Like what person has to offer.

2 - See what they have to offer over a period of time.

3 The person grows on you, you decide you really like them.

4 - You are willing to pay for the person’s product or service because you trust them.

The real action verb here is “trust” and that’s what list building is all about.

Thanks for sharing your insight Ana. I look forward to the results of your post. Have a powerful week!

  • Blog Traffic Challenge: Did You See My Glove Laying Around Here?
    Hi Ana,

Super wrap up here. More than a few actionable power tips we can call take AND apply to our blogs, for as you mention unless you act on these tips they do you know good. Read, think, process, act….and don’t forget to act immediately!

Now on to the challenge. I missed the post originally. Now that I see it, challenge accepted :)

I like your mention of Cheryl’s post. Humor is disarming. Even though you don’t normally care for a certain type of post a funny lead-in combined with a silly image can put you in a light, relaxed frame of mind. When feeling this way it’s easy to abandon your viewpoints and simply be open minded to what is. This is a great lesson in mental science and human psychology for that matter.

Mavis’s post was on the money. It was the only one from this list that I read and I must say all the tips were accurate and actionable. Excellent reading for someone who feels lacking in prospecting ideas.

Thanks for sharing your insight Ana. Enjoy your weekend :)

  • Podcasting: The Alternate Universe Of Traffic Generation
    Hi Hector,

Each time I see your name recently I see it linked with the word “Podcast.” I see how well it’s working for you. Certainly piquing my interest.

The time argument versus SEO is a valid one. iTunes generates massive traffic and seems to be an underutilized niche. Until seeing your podcast posts recently there wasn’t much of a buzz surrounding the podcast-iTunes strategy. We know trying to go things too quickly on the SEO front results in being penalized. Our job as home based entrepreneurs is to leverage time. If you do something, make sure it creates an impression on as many people as possible. That’s why I write comments how I write comments ;)

Podcasts are relatively easy to create, personable, and allow you to connect with your audience with greater ease than the written word. Hearing someone’s voice creates the feeling they are there with you. Great stuff for the branding/trust department and isn’t this one of the key factors in any traffic generation campaign? Once you have someone’s trust you start to gain the trust of their friends, and their friends, and so on until you have a sphere of influence.

Thanks for sharing your take on podcasts Hector. Perhaps we will see one on RBs Keys soon ;) Have a prosperous day.

Well, I only “brand” TGC in one of my “Quality” accounts. The other ones are just the off-shoots of my split personality. :)

As long as I provide quality info on all accounts, I haven’t seen any confusion. Some people figure out that it’s all me, but they choose to follow one of “me”.

Reply

Ana trafficgenerationcafe.com February 18, 2011 at 10:26 am

The way you do potential followers search is usually by keywords, like “blogging”, or choose to follow the followers of another user in your niche.

Either way, there’s no guarantee you won’t get spammers - as a matter of fact, you are almost guaranteed to get some.

You can always get rid of them by hand, but I only do it in my “quality” account.

Hi Ana,

I’m doing everything you’re doing except I have ONE account.

And, it’s the first account I had on Twitter. I’ve had it for 2 yrs. I also
have a rating of 100 on Twitter Grader.

I’m not bragging at all, because I’ve worked hard and sacrificed alot of sleep.
I don’t work outside of the home. I only work at home. So I have as much
time as I want to work on the internet.

I spend atleast 4 hrs. day on Twitter!

I’m also #1 for the keyword Cashprofits on the first page of Google. But,
I’ve sacrificed lots of time to achieve these things.

What drives me when the results aren’t that great, is I’m determined I’m
not going to invest my life into corporate America anymore. CEO’s are a
bunch of greedy crooks.

CEO = Chief Elimination Officer

Here’s my advice, if anybody wants it. You will have to work hard to make a
siignificant income online. So what! Working 40-60 hrs. a day is working hard too.

And, when you get laid off, you’ll probably not get a severance package. Also,
most people will not find a job before your unemployment runs out. I know people
that have been laid off for 2 yrs. trying to find ANYTHING!

So, you can either try to invest some extra time into things that you build once, &
that provide residual income for you no matter what you’re doing, or keep doing
what you’re doing and get the same results.

I’m off on a tangent. But, I believe the secret to success is to set your mind on a goal,
and take all out massive action to reach it. You have to really know “Why” you want
to reach that goal, and never let up. It takes persistence & dedication.

Ok. So does it pay off? Absolutely!

My results :

About 2000 visitors a month, & I have the screenshots to prove it.

Roy aka Cashprofits

P.S. Good luck everyone! Don’t ever give up trying to achieve your dreams!

Hi Ana,

This is a cool strategy. I knew about sharing other people blog posts and this way grow your audience. I also knew about creating different Twitter accounts - for each business separately, but I never thought about the strategy to create multiple accounts based on the topic and then merge them together to drive traffic to one website.
It is a very interesting approach, let’s try this out.

Kind regards,

Thanks for sharing your methods and results in such detail! This makes it look like it may be worth a try. Still not sure because (1) this does look a little bit spammy, and (2) I normally run Linux… But definitely something worth considering.

As others have noted, the conversion rate from those visitors can make or break the value of this strategy. Maybe you should address that in one of your future posts. Should be possible to track with Analytics.

The only way (really) you can get followers on Twitter is by following others, Val. That’s not spam, that’s reality and that’s what everybody else does, believe me.

Conversions are an interesting questions. I do see a lot of opt-ins coming from Twitter DMs I send out, but I never made it “official”.

Maybe because I suck at GA; only know the basics.

You can set up subscriptions as goals in Google Analytics and wait a month or so for data to be collected. Then, when you drill down to individual traffic sources, you can check the goal conversion statistics for each traffic source.

I always respond to DMs that appear to be personal. When they don’t get a follow up it is usually because they were an autodm that was worked on. That is still enough to get unfollowed.

Sometimes I’ll pay one more visit to their website to see if there is enough substance to stick around.

Reply

Ana trafficgenerationcafe.com February 18, 2011 at 9:33 am

That’s exactly what I bank on, Jack: my blog substance.

Since most of my Twitter followers are targeted, it’s only logical to think that they will want to stay and learn.

Again, this is numbers game and since most of it is done automatically, I am OK with that. :)

Well, Ana

I don’t know why you changed your strategy in the first place. When you have something that is working you don’t have to change it, you have to expand on it and improve it.

As I can observe twitter is pretty much about numbers, you can try and may get some quality, but if you go for just that you might miss some other visitors. Now what puzzles me is, will this 1000+ visitors produce more conversions (as in subscribe to rss, comment etc) then the 400 you got when you were going for quality?

You don’t need to answer that, but I am just wondering if you could get the same by doing less.

But I haven’t really learned how to use Twitter to the full extent but I know it can’t be too much more different than using Facebook. I slowly dabb a bit and sit, watch, and learn from what others do to pick up the healthy way of using it without people getting angry. BTW I agree with Heather’s statement and your response. You are uber-orgainized and I also have a minimalist work desk, consisting of a lap top. The less clutter the better is my motto.

Thanks for sharing your insight Ana. Have a prospering day :)

I like Twitter. I like it because, for me, it’s the chat of the future, AND it serves as my number one traffic source.
That being said, I once tried to keep two Twitter accounts and could barely keep up with it. Five? There is no way. Though I can definitely see what your saying.
I find your blog interesting because I completely don’t think about traffic the way that you and most of your readers do. It’s very useful, and I’m learning along the way. So thanks.
And.. I clicked over from Twitter.

These are generally awesome tips, yet again, Ana! The only thing I disagree with is the DM. I feel DM’s are way too spammy these days and I don’t even check mine anymore. It’s just not worth my time to sift through the garbage to get to the good stuff, especially if all that’s in the DM is: “come to my blog! love me!”

I understand people don’t say it like that, but you get my point. I’d rather someone personally @ me instead of DM me. Just my 2 cents! :)

Thanks for the great article! Twitter still rocks. ;)

I actually agree with you, Morgan. Most DMs are a bunch of spam and most people (including me) never check them.

However, those people who do check them find my message very appealing, since it’s all about THEM and not me at all. That’s why I get such high numbers of new Twitter visitors.

If a technique doesn’t work the old way any longer, we just need to find how to make it work the new way. :)

Interesting to see the traffic goes back up. Correct targeting, as with everything marketing, makes a huge difference. Obviously :)

I spend very little time on Twitter myself, perhaps one hour per day all in. I set aside some time each day to use it as part of my market watching (for each of my niches), respond to @ replies, talk about whatever’s going on (like normal people do), and then let my follow app do the rest.

Twitter is still a great place to meet new and interesting people.

I second all your points, Robert, except for one: I only truly engage with people @WebTrafficCafe - that’s the only quality account where people can interact with me. The others are just running on autopilot.

I do agree though that Twitter doesn’t have to take much time - contrary to popular belief.

I found that if your twitter accounts are largely running on autopilot without any personal interaction like mentionings and RT’s doesn’t bring any new followers your way as the ‘new follower/old follower leaving’ rate will be pretty much equal.

Ana trafficgenerationcafe.com February 10, 2011 at 9:06 am

Very true, Andreas, but that’s not the point.

The point is not to acquire thousands of followers and keep them, but rather bring them to my blog. My DM message is the most important tool I use for that.

Anna, do you have any tips on how much content (tweets) to generate per Twitter account and how often to publish them throughout the day? Also does Twitter Adder permit you to publish tweets in blocks of 3 or 4? I recall reading that you encouraged this.

Good memory, Arturo. Yes, you can schedule to publish your tweets in blocks with TweetAdder.

I don’t personally use TweetAdder for this specific task - I use MarketMeSuite for that since it lets me brand all my tweets and even add signatures, but you still can use TweetAdder.

When I just started, I made sure to post my blocks of 3-4 tweets at least every 3 hours around the clock.

Now that my accounts are more established, I pretty much publish whenever I want to. :)

Hi Ana,

Wow, your twitter stats are impressive. I’ve got market me suite through your link a while back and I really enjoy it. I’ll be getting tweet adder as well. :)

One of the things I like the best about you and your blog, Ana, is that you’re always testing what you’re trying. How you keep track of it all is impressive. Your organization amazes me, and secretly I hope you’re desk is messy too, but I doubt it. :) lol

TweetAdder and MarketMeSuite are the 2 products that control my social media engagement. Considering how much traffic I get out of it, they are priceless.

By the way, have you tried MMS new FB signature feature? I love it!

I realise now that I’m not getting nearly as much usage out of Twitter as I could be. It’s amazing how much connection and networking you can get out of that little website, especially as it’s very easy to keep in touch with someone (or everyone).

Thanks Ana, great read :-)
