How to Take Over Twitter

Today, I’d like to introduce you to my guest author, Harris Fellman. Harris recently launched CoupDeTwitter - a course on how to properly get started with twitter, get lots of followers, and turn those followers into cash.

He is by no means a Social Media Purist, but still he teaches what he considers the “right way” to interact on Twitter & other Social Media platforms (hint: it ain’t by spamming people your offers). Harris has a number of years of success in the internet marketing realm and I feel very honored to have him as a guest author today.

With that … here’s Harris’ blog post entitled “How to Take Over Twitter”:

It’s everywhere. From blogs to newspapers to books at Barnes and Noble.

And it’s loud.

Tweet, tweet, tweet, tweet.

It’s Twitter. And whether you like it or not (yet) it’s going to be around in some form or another for a long time I suspect. Might as well get used to it, right?

A couple of months ago I was in the same boat many of you might be in right now, wondering whether all this Twitter madness was of any use to me at all or whether it was just a bunch of noise, literally. But I started to hear a lot of Twitter related stories and talked to people that I personally know who were using it in ways that I hadn’t considered before.

And the light bulb finally went off for me. There was some serious power in Twitter! People were not only using it to make connections and network with others, they were making money too. Some of them making LOTS of it as I came to find out.

The biggest thing that stood out for me is this…

From a marketing perspective, Twitter = Listbuilding.

Plain and simple. Proper listbuilding is all about building a list AND building relationships with the people on that list. And in many cases the people I was talking to confided in me that their Twitter contacts were more responsive than even their e-mail lists were.

As a long time email marketer, I was pretty shocked. But I started doing research and I discovered several truths that I want to share with you.

There’s a right way and a wrong way to go about using Twitter for traffic generation, and some rules of thumb to keep in mind along the way.

But there are several crucial steps you’ll want to take note of.

Here’s how this works:

1. Get followers. Sounds simple right? But there’s a lot of stuff out there that will make you think you can just automate the process and be done with it. BEWARE, Twitter is watching. If you do it wrong, you’re sunk. Account Suspended. Tweet no more.

2. Build a relationship with your followers. Yes, that’s right, you’re going to need to start talking with your followers! You want to treat them like you would anyone you might meet at any other social gathering, stipulating that you’re not at a professional wrestling event and everyone is already yelling at one another.

3. Get them Clicking & ReTweeting. Once you build that relationship with them you want to encourage (gently) them to start clicking links you provide with items of interest and most of all to get them Retweeting your posts. Why? Because the *real* power of Twitter is NOT in your own list of followers. Nope. The real power is in the power of the exponent. If you give things of value to the Twitterverse, the Twitterverse will return the favor… Tenfold.

4. Last but not least. You want to make money, right? Of course you do. Once you’ve completed steps one through three, there are a ton of ways that you can start to monetize your followers…their followers and their followers followers. But also beware: Twitter spam is on the rise and people are becoming wary of anyone who just jumps into the pool and starts shouting Marco Polo at the top of their lungs. You have to be very careful to craft your Tweets so that people are still getting maximum value from you.

4 seemingly simple steps, and they’re not rocket science, but they do take some finesse and time to do properly.

If you’d like to learn more about how to properly implement these 4 steps, I welcome you to join me and my Coup De Twitter system. It will teach you how to do Twitter the RIGHT way as well as 7 easy ways to make money with it plus a handful of advanced tactics as well.

Ana,

I have been following your guide, and now have 800 new followers within a month.

Great tips.

Now I have started to filter out the UK based folks to my own list. Is there a way to tweet to just these people ?

Great results, Leslie.

Unfortunately, it’s not possible to tweet to a certain segment of your followers at this point.

Ana,
Thanks for sharing the info.
Just reinforces the fact that we have to remember
People are People, Just like us and that
Twitter, FaceBook, Blogs, etc are Just Tools
that we can use to build Relationships with People,
Not some magic pixi dust.
Make it a great day.

You are so right, Dennis, and love your comparison to magic pixi dust:).

Social media is a lot of work, if done right, but it also brings many great rewards, once again if done right.

I appreciate you sharing your opinion, Dennis - see you around.

Great post, your right it does seem really simple to use. However, It really isnt. I still dont really understand how you make money using twitter, but it is definitely the center of the social media universe!

I agree: Twitter or any other online marketing strategy is not easy - until you learn how to use it, that is.

That’s why Harris wrote this post to begin with; to share his knowledge of how to actually do it.

His Coup De Twitter course is really great, and yes, it does teach how to actually make money using Twitter directly.

Thanks for the comment!

Hey Ana,

I spent a lot of time on Twitter and hated it in the end since I didn’t have any success with it.

I like your idea of getting your followers to your blog as soon as possible and take it from there.

Thanks for sharing this.

All the best,

That’s the only way to do it, Mavis, as far as I am concerned. Otherwise, Twitter drives me nuts!

Some good points (as usual!) Ana - I definitely have a love hate thing going with Twitter - Sometimes wonder why I bother but there is a value in tuning in to the general noise on the forum and I’ve started to retweet the good stuff and make the effort to engage. Its a shame it seems like you need a couple hundred connections for one actual reciprocal relationship - but those that you can get to visit your blog or FB network are where the value lies- I agree with Steve re connecting on multiple forums and welcome all this tribe to hook up on Twitter-linkedin on or other similar sites

Cheers Kiaran

My question is : can you brand yourself as a network marketer on twitter or is its real power affiliate sales?

I haven’t had much success with affiliate sales on Twitter, Peter. I mostly use it for branding and driving traffic to my blog.

What about you?

Peter Fuller MBA July 20, 2010 at 2:22 pm

I have sold a few products by giving stuff initially away for free on twitter but I do not yet have any real measure on branding. The reason is that I tend to RT on twitter verses promoting my own brand.

Hi Ana,

Harris did a nice job of putting that together. I spent some time on Twitter in the beginning but there is a lot of “noise” to wade through and I really didn’t enjoy it… at all.

Now I just try to get new connections over to Facebook asap so we can actually connect, if they’d like that as well.

Great stuff Ana!

Thanks, Susanna.

As you may know, many people share your distaste for Twitter.

However, some people on Twitter do listen, and it would not be wise for us not to be there.

If Twitter list building is on your strategy list (and it should be), then Coup de Twitter is a perfect place to start. Better learn it right the first time around :) .

Thanks, Aaron.

I definitely agree with this approach. I have been spending more time on twitter trying to drive the connections to a social site like facebook to have more in depth conversations. It’s all about connecting no matter what platform it is. I agree that you are seeing more spam type tactics on twitter once I become aware that is the case I unfollow to get them out of my timeline. I want people to see more “real” interaction and attract those types of followers. I am sure you can develop great relationships on twitter its just hard to keep having 140 character conversations all the time.

How about a suggestion. Everyone in our group follow and interact with one another as often as we can and maybe that will encourage other “real” tweople to follow and interact as well.

You are so right, Steve. I find it impossible to build any real relationships on Twitter.

Statistically, a new Twitter user has a “Twitter life span” between 30 and 60 days - that’s it. So with such a small communication window, my goal is to get them over to my blog and hopefully to my list as quickly as possible.

I like your suggestion. I am not sure if all of us are active on Twitter, but we can try!
