Ana, I do pay attention to page load speed, but I balance that against what I want my blogs to do.For example, I have a hiking blog where many of the posts have several pictures. Since hiking is highly visual and pics are important, I go with larger pictures at higher resolution, and this, of course, increases my page loading time. But it’s worth it to me. I may take a small hit on SERP, but the visitors I do get will appreciate my site more.

Ana, I somehow wound up in the Akismet doghouse on Monday morning for reasons totally unclear to me. I think I’ve been cool on all 7 of your rules.I immediately contacted all 6 blog owners where my comments hadn’t appeared and asked them to approve. All did.
I then took your advice and contacted Akismet. I got a reply about 12-16 hours later with an apology and the news that the problem had been fixed.
Still don’t know why it happened…

Hey Ana,
I’ve read quite a few posts about this issue with Akismet. It’s so annoying to see a nicely written comment ending up in the spam box a few days later when you realized your comments didn’t show up. I totally agree with you on those captcha comments. I think it’s also a good way to block spam but this GASP plugin is so easy. Just a click of your mouse to confirm you are not a spammer.
Definitely getting rid of Akismet now!

Hi Ana, thanks for the tip about GASP! I was using Askimet when I first read your article, thinking I never lose people who comment in spam. Then, I checked, and sure enough it had jailed a legitimate person. I have deactived Askimet and am trying GASP. Thanks again!

Hi Ana, I’m just as excited about GASP as you are. I was once a victim of the wrath of Akismet and my comments were landing in people’s spam folders even though these were blogs that I had commented on many times in the past. I contacted Akismet twice and they did finally resolve the issue but they never told me what the issue was to begin with.
I read a post by Tia from BizChicksBlog that if you’re on shared hosting you can be banned by Akismet because other bloggers using the same host might be unsavory.
The GrowMap Anti-Spambot Plugin is the only alternative for Akismet available in the Wordpress repository. It’s my second favorite plugin of all time - CommentLuv is my first.

Hi, Ileane - I think I am in the same boat with Akismet.
I contacted them, but haven’t heard anything back.
I do love GASP so far; the only problem I see is trackbacks. I’ll have to resolve that one somehow.
Thanks for coming by!
Ana
Ana, I want to see the trackbacks in the comment section. In most cases I submit my posts to social sites like BlogEngage, SERPd or MMOSocialNetwork and I want the trackbacks to show up so that my commenters will see them and vote. Why don’t you like seeing them on your blog?

I use Akismet and G.A.S.P together.
I noticed some few days ago, there were spammers who want to sell iphone 4Gs with tons of links passed G.A.S.P but filtered as spams by Akismet.
I absolutely agree, G.A.S.P will help us combatting spams.

Hey Ana, why so late with the GASP review ?

As a commenter I must say that I love gasp because it doesn’t have a false positive effect, unless of course I forget to tick the checkbox.
And about the comments vanishing in thin air, I think Tinh’s blog did this but it only went in the approving queue, because after a couple of hours/days it appeared on his page and his is not the only one, I saw other blogs doing the same. Anyway it’s kind of scary to write an 100+ words comment and see it vanish away..

This blog seems to have hit the nail on the head! Timely for me as I find that Akismet just lets through spams that obviously just that spam.

Hey Ana,
Woo hoo! Let’s pour a glass of wine and celebrate! I’ve already installed this plugin!
I’m always leaving your blog with something to add to my to-do list to make it better, faster, more popular, easier to navigate, easier to find, or easier to use…and for once, I can check this one off before I even add it!
On the why we shouldn’t use a captcha note: I had actually forced myself to get into the habit of copying my whole comment to my clipboard before pushing submit, just in case the captcha didn’t work. As much of a pain as it was, at least I could past it back in again and not have to recompose it.
I appreciate you!

Hello Heather,
Glad to see you again. I really appreciate your comment and I’m glad you are now using GASP. I’ve been also copying my comment to other blogs who are using captcha before I submit it because it’s really frustrating that after making a very long comment, you will just lose it and need to compose another one. I hope others will also see that problem so that it is easier not only for the bloggers but for the commenters as well.
Have a nice day Heather,

I’ve been on both sides of the fence. The white page is frustrating. On the flip side it can be agitating when Aksimet catches legit comments on my blog.

Ana,
I kept hearing about the GASP plugin and decided to give it a try - and it’s been working wonderfully for me! (Now if there was a plug-in like this for my email…)
I was banned by Akismet a couple of months ago and it took me days to figure out why 90% of the blogs I was commenting on wouldn’t allow me to post. As a total non-spammer it was really frustrating. Though once I contacted Akismet they did remove me from their ban list.

Hey Ana,
I’ve started seeing this on other blogs. I’m going to install it an take off the Captcha and Akismet. I’m not a big fan of Captcha. However, I was receiving at least 50 spam comments a day. Until I install the Captcha plugin.
I’m going to install it right now!

It’s amazing how much effort it takes to convince some people what a great benefit this FREE plugin can bring to their blog!
Go figure…
What also bothers me is when getting a message after submission of a lengthy comment that says “you do not have cookies and javascript enabled in your browser’ while its all turned on and works well on other sites.
I HATE it when you put time and effort to make a comment and then it’s all gone because some spam filter made a decision on how valid your comment is.
Never had this problem with GASP; they made a believer out of me.
Have a great day, Andreas; thank you so much for being such a loyal reader for my blog!

Ana, this seems to be a real solution to the problem. I have noticed it on other blogs & wondered what it was all about. It certainly maks a lot of sense. I’m really keen to try it on my other work at home business blog that Akismet is catching about 50 spam comments a day on.
As already commented by John, does it offer the blogger the ability to approve any comment before it becomes visible, made by first time “real” commenters?
Otherwise we run the risk of getting a bunch of “silly” comments impregnating our blogs.
Michael B Wilbraham@Network Marketing Insights´s last blog ..Are You Driving Your Network Marketing Business With The Right Attitude
Good point, Michael.
I have set my blog comments to go into moderation if the commentator doesn’t have any previous approved comments on my blog - you can do that though your WP admin panel.
That pretty much takes care of the problem.
Ana
Ana, I’ll switch to G.A.S.P. soon. I’ve now used it many times and many blogs and I see it’s utility. I decided to be a bit of a late adopter so that people who visit blogs can get used to having to check the box.

John Soares´s last blog ..What Benefits Do You Get From Blogging Networks
Wow, it’s never been a huge problem for me, John. It’s mostly bot spammers that I deal with.
What do you currently use? Does it help?
Like most other people, I use Akismet. Overall it does a very good job, but I go through the spam folder a couple of times a day and occasionally find a legit comment.
John Soares´s last blog ..When You Should Do a Half-Assed Job
This looks like a great alternative. I’ve noticed that in the past few months Akismet has become owned by the spammers. On my most popular site we sometimes get 17,000 spam comments a DAY. Recently we were forced to go to moderating comments from first-time commenters — for the first time in 7 years. We had no choice, because if even a small fraction get through, it could be 3 or 4 dozen spam comments that get published in error. We have a team that checks spam several times a day, but it could be several hours before the spam is removed by our moderators. What takes even more of our time is to check the spam folders for legitimated comments that get filtered out in error. I’ll be happy to see this plugin work.
Anita Campbell@small business´s last blog ..Small Business News- It’s About The People!
I had the same problem and frustrations with Akismet, Anita - all the time wasted to controlling a problem that shouldn’t be there to begin with!
I’ve been very happy with this plugin; I might get just a handful spam comments per day placed by real people, not bots.
Hope you’ll be just as pleased with it as I am.
Ana
Hey Ana
I have been reading about this plugin the last couple of days so I will give it a test.
I wonder though how long it will be for spammers to have a solution for it like they do with Captcha.
