This is so interesting I’m going to put my creativity to work and try this one. :D

    Hi!
There could be a number of reasons why your signature isn’t getting clicked. It could be that you need to add a catchy description or it could just be that you’re not in a high traffic forum and not very people are viewing it. My suggestion is to start by creating catchy signature text and be sure to engage others in conversation and by offering your expertise.
    Good luck!

Excellent!!! I love Flickr and have always felt that if utilized properly it could bring in a lot of traffic to your pictures and website.

I did an experiment with a couple of Flickr accounts. I had one where I didn’t leave any comments and never linked to it, but I constantly updated it.

Then I had another where I would constantly comment on other people’s pictures and link to them from my blog.

The first one never got any friends, comments or views.

The second one, I was getting new contacts daily, new comments and dozens of views.

It’s should be treated like any other social network: engage, engage, engage. :)

Thanks a lot for this!

However I will definitely take a look at Flickr, your system seems to be very good, similar to using videos on your blog, and commenting on You Tube.

Hey Pete, I was always considering buying photos for my sites, but with all the great free sources, why would I. Although I know Dreamstime has free images they give away.

Flickr has some great photos, you don’t have to focus the whole photo using strategy on it, but getting a fresh new visitor or two can be a great way to move your blog further up :)

Sure would. All you need to do is make a comment that adds value and try not to get lost in the noise.
If you see a video with hundreds of comments, what could happen is that your comment doesn’t get noticed, so be smart about choosing where to comment.

Instead of commenting directly on the video, how about going to the authors YouTube channel and thanking him/her there, I am sure that would be noticed :)

Where do you stand on watermarking photos before putting them out there?

There are a few of my images that I am really, really pleased with and if I’m honest there is a little part of me wanting to keep them all for myself and take all the credit.

Should I watermark to soothe my ego or let them roam freely on t’internet?

Cheers x

(If you go to my home page you’ll wonder what on earth I’m on about - those photos are dull so if you are gonna go look please go here instead http://hedgecombers.com/2009/06/20/warning-stupidly-cute-photos-in-this-post/ )

Reply

Brankica Underwood live-your-love.com January 29, 2011 at 10:19 pm

Well, let me say this about watermarking:
You can do it but the questions is if anyone would use that photo since there are so many that are not watermarked.
It isn’t about crediting you, but the fact that watermark is still gonna show over the picture and I, for example, would go for another photo.
So if you would put a watermark over them, you might not see this traffic I am talking about :)

On the other hand, if you want to try and keep your photos for yourself, I would not even put them on the internet.

What I think you should do, is just say “goodbye” to some of your photos, post them on Flickr and try this traffic generating idea.

That way you would still be able to try it out, if it will work for you, and keep your favorites for yourself.

I see you have a lot of photos on your blog (the ducks are so cute) and you could probably find even more creative ways to use the tips I wrote about.

I have recently created a flickr account but have unchecked all search engine indexing and public display because the photos and videos are only meant for family and relatives and I’m even not sure if these images can not be viewed by others.
A little bit of privacy is a very valuable item on the internet nowadays.

Quick question on this, I understand we should also use Image alt/title: At least once in the alt attribute of an image on the page.

And this not only helps with web search, but also image search, which can occasionally bring valuable traffic. But what about duplicate Image alt/title, etc…? Is that an issue when many people are using the same image?

Because a lot of people are using flickr.com to get images…and big chance, 1000s of us probably use the same image, right…

Really appreciate your help, thanks.

Regards,
Dev

Brankica, I loved this! Way to think outside of the box

I mostly use images from iStockPhoto and every now and then link to a Flickr photo, but this strategy is awesome!

My little sister is actually an outstanding photographer and she has tons of great photos she could upload to Flickr and I just know that people would love to use her photos since they look so darn professional.

Never really though of using Flickr as a credible traffic source, but you just demonstrated how it could really work! :)

Can anyone suggest more good image libraries with CC, PD, or other royalty-free licensing? When I try to Google for them, I get a “too much information” syndrome because there is so much sites that technically fit the criteria but are useless because of how few images they have.

You can check morguefile.com, it is a pretty good source of images.

The best way to search for sites like those, in my opinion, is not Google them, but go through blogs that deal with similar topics and see if they have posts with image source lists.

That is how I found some great sources.

Brankica,
What a great thing Ana did by having you guest post here :) . Hats off to both of you!

This was a great reminder for me to use Flickr as I think I’ve only once used a photo from there - and of course credited the image - as I always do. I have no clue why people don’t do that. I always abide by the rule “give credit where it’s due” in anything I write or share or say.

What’s interesting is that I have seen a couple people actually say to the author of a Flickr pic that they’ve used their image and added a link to where they found it. I thought that was a great thing and so I did the same that one time I used an image - plus the author/photographer had actually asked that people do that.

What you mention about adding how it can help bring traffic to your blog is so spot on. As a writer/blogger I often neglect to do the little things that will help improve or generate traffic to my blog. And this is a great reminder and something I should think of much more often.

And another great tip about searching popular authors that update often. I never thought of that.

After reading this post - Flickr will become one of my main sources to find new images - thanks to you. I usually use Google images but you’ve pointed out some great benefits to using Flickr :) . Thank you for that.

You can be sure I will leave the photographer or artist a nice little message (genuine and not spammy) to thank them and show them where they can find it. No worries - it wouldn’t be anything like my blog comments hahaha. I’ll keep it short ;) .

Some excellent points you make here Brankica. Great of you to share.
I’m curious though - have you noticed an increase in your traffic because of Flickr? Is is significant?

Cheers and have a great weekend - you too Ana

PS - If I want a great dog pic - I know where to go now - straight to Roma :)

I think people are kinda weird about linking out of their site. Like it’s gonna hurt them or something.

I mean you don’t want to link to a lousy spammy one, but we are talking Flickr here. Make the link no-follow if it is that big of a deal and you are not loosing anything.

I love Google images but I have trouble finding the license to some of those images so I end up not using them, in case they are copyrighed.

You know, if you make a FLickr comment as interesting and long as you make a blog comment, you will be even more noticed, how about that traffic :)

Yes, I did see increase of traffic on the site I use it on. I didn’t apply the full strategy to the current blog - yet. But the site I did use it for, at times Flickr was, I believe, 8th source of traffic (the first 7 being the search engines and search engines image searches, image searches cause the images are SEO-ed).

Yeah, Roma decided to be a model and she said she will pose for anyone that need a puppy photo…

Thanks for the comment, Ingrid, and Bring IT on Wednesday!

I loved the two piece of advice you shared at the end. Find new places to meet people and diversify your link portfolio (I a bad boy and need to be punished for using biz speak :-p )

Thats really sound advice tho. And traffic should be approached as cumulative effort from many sources rather than a magic bullet (or button as you put it).
