Can a minute of your time and a camera help you get more traffic? Ask Flickr

traffic generation through flickr image

Reinvent the wheel?

Have you read Ana’s post about Images that will rock your world?

There were some comments on that post that were along the lines of “I am tired of Flickr”. Well, did you know you can actually generate traffic from Flickr?

No, I am not talking about putting your blog’s link in your profile and hoping people will click on it.

I am talking about getting much more than just one link (that no one will ever see, anyway).

I actually use this “strategy” from time to time on my static website and it works like a clock.

I would say that, in this case, there are two ways to generate traffic from Flickr.

One will work for everyone. The other one can work for everyone, but it will work better if you are in a niche.

Strategy 1 - works for any type of blog

Every blogger likes to have great images to go with their posts. Flickr is a great source of those.

With their Creative Commons search you can find images to use for free on your blog, as long as you link back to the original source.

A lot of people use images without linking back to the source. If you use Flickr you must link back, but you can always make the link no-follow, so it’s not such a big deal.

A nice thing to do would be to credit the author as well. It doesn’t cost you anything to do it, so why not.

how to link back to flickr

Well, there is one extra thing you need to do to make all this work for traffic generation. Cause linking to Flickr and crediting author still doesn’t do anything for you, right.

Go back to the image, make a comment and link back to your blog.

Write a comment like you would on a blog post. Make sure it is not something like “Cool pic”. Tell author why you liked his image.

Most comments on images are something like “wow”, “what a pic”, “nicely done”. Make your comment stand out!

Then tell him/her you used the image in your blog post and link to it to show them how you used the image.

Some might say that they don’t see the point since all links from Flickr are no-follow, but don’t forget we are talking about traffic here.

If you want to milk it even more, search for popular authors that update their profiles often. Usually, their images as more visited. Chose one of their photos that will fit in with your post and do the comment+link thing.

So how does this work for traffic generation?

People are curious. They will see a comment that is different. If you linked a great title to your blog post in the image comments, they often click to check it out.

It is something like seeing an interesting post title among all those CommentLuv links in blog comments.

What happens a lot of times as well, is that the author will come to check out what you did. They love seeing how people use their images.

Aren’t you glad you credited them properly? Because when you do something nice with their image, they will often link to your post in their portfolio (usually on a blog somewhere). I guess that is a double win for you.

Strategy 2 - works better for niche blogs

This one is similar since it includes links under images too, but it might work better for people that are in a niche.

This way of traffic generation includes your own profile and images.

Let’s say you are blogging about dogs. You have a dog or two of your own and you take a lot of great photos of them.

There are many dog websites that will always be on the lookout for great dog photos.

So upload your images to Flickr. If someone likes it, they will use it on the blog. A visitor (dog lover) will see the image, go to check it out on Flickr and what does he see there…

Under your image you will add a description where you can write something about the image and put a link to your blog. Something like “This is my female pit bull Bonnie. For more Bonnie photos you can visit my blog http://yourdomain.com“.

More photos equal more links that will bring more visitors.

Why I think that this will work better in a niche is that it’s not easy to get targeted visitors to a traffic generation blog through a photo of your backyard. For a gardening blog, however, this would work great.

I don’t even have to mention how important this type of linking and traffic would be for a blog focused on photography.

Extra tip

Let me try and make this work for bloggers that are not in a niche! Since you are not blogging about a topic that can have targeted images, how about being creative?

Let’s say you wrote a blog post about 3 reasons why bag ladies would make excellent bloggers. You use a bag-lady image from Flickr and do all the linking and crediting the right way.

If you go back to Flickr and make a comment along the lines of: “Jane, I love the photos you posted here. Although I love colors, I found this black and white image of yours so interesting. I even used it on my new blog post 3 reasons bag ladies would make excellent bloggers. Thanks for the inspiration.” Of course, you would put a link back to your blog here.

Simple question - would you click on the link to see what the h… bag ladies have to do with blogging!? I am hearing Yes in echos.

As you can see, all it takes is a few extra minutes of your time and you can bring new, fresh traffic to your blog.

It won’t bring a thousand of visitors after commenting on one image, so don’t think of this as a magic button (no magic buttons in traffic generation). As always, you will need to work for each one of your visitors, but if even one of them becomes a regular reader, don’t you think you’ve accomplished something :)

Keep in mind that the same things you wouldn’t tolerate on your blog, Twitter or Facebook are not tolerated on Flickr. So don’t spam people with comments and links, be genuine and make this work for you, not against you.

Let me give you one last reason why you should try the Flickr.

Bloggers are always searching for new ways to generate traffic and get exposure.

Twitter is so over saturated, that you can see same old links tweeted for months. Facebook is getting close.

So how about finding new places to meet people and expand your circle of connections? Flickr is the place to do it. It is still relatively spam free. Not too many people are all over it for links and you can connect with new peeps.

Not only will you diversify your link sources, but you will create a whole new group of friends there. “Flickrers” (just invented this one, lol) are a friendly bunch and you can even get them to send you exclusive, one of a kind photos for your blog.

One of my experiences, after commenting on a photo I used, was contact from the author saying “If you ever need a specific photo, tell me, I will take one for you and send it“.

With us searching all over the place for great but free images, wouldn’t you want to connect with people like those?

I love these tips, Brankica! I’m already sending a link back and attributing the photographer on all the photos I use from Flickr. What a great way to give a little comment love to the photographer and generate some extra traffic.

You also have me thinking about grabbing my camera and start taking some pictures of my own to post on Flickr. This might cut down on some of the time it takes for me to select photos for my blog too.

Thanks for the great ideas.

Hi Brankica!

Ah, the great question about Flickr is finally answered! I swear, it’s one of those facepalm moments. I smacked my forehead and said, “DOH!” (Kinda scared the baby when I did…)

Forums are everywhere, and these places are like mini-blogs. Why not treat them as such? I just started a photo album on Flickr for my daughter (so the grandparents can see her newest pics), but I can do the same thing with my blog, with a fresh account, and make my name there.

I just put it on my list of things to accomplish this week. Thank you for the idea!

I think that the strategy outlined here is really good and it works. My site does not have many posts currently - just 27 including the one that I posted today. In the last one week, I used the “flickr strategy” as given here. It helped me in two ways - one, I think it gave me some pretty images for my blog and has helped me make it a little more colorful. And two, more importantly, it has given me some good traffic. Initially, the owners of the images visited the blog and some of them had nice things to say. And as per the google analytics, much more than 27 people have paid the blog a visit - which means that not all are the image owners!

Thanks a ton for the idea. I think I am going to use the traffic generation cafe as my traffic generation school. Will keep you posted about my increased traffic.

Excellent!!! I love Flickr and have always felt that if utilized properly it could bring in a lot of traffic to your pictures and website.

I did an experiment with a couple of Flickr accounts. I had one where I didn’t leave any comments and never linked to it, but I constantly updated it.

Then I had another where I would constantly comment on other people’s pictures and link to them from my blog.

The first one never got any friends, comments or views.

The second one, I was getting new contacts daily, new comments and dozens of views.

It’s should be treated like any other social network: engage, engage, engage. :)

Thanks a lot for this!

Sure would. All you need to do is make a comment that adds value and try not to get lost in the noise.
If you see a video with hundreds of comments, what could happen is that your comment doesn’t get noticed, so be smart about choosing where to comment.

Instead of commenting directly on the video, how about going to the authors YouTube channel and thanking him/her there, I am sure that would be noticed :)

Where do you stand on watermarking photos before putting them out there?

There are a few of my images that I am really, really pleased with and if I’m honest there is a little part of me wanting to keep them all for myself and take all the credit.

Should I watermark to soothe my ego or let them roam freely on t’internet?

Cheers x

Reply

Brankica Underwood January 29, 2011 at 10:19 pm

Well, let me say this about watermarking:
You can do it but the questions is if anyone would use that photo since there are so many that are not watermarked.
It isn’t about crediting you, but the fact that watermark is still gonna show over the picture and I, for example, would go for another photo.
So if you would put a watermark over them, you might not see this traffic I am talking about :)

On the other hand, if you want to try and keep your photos for yourself, I would not even put them on the internet.

What I think you should do, is just say “goodbye” to some of your photos, post them on Flickr and try this traffic generating idea.

That way you would still be able to try it out, if it will work for you, and keep your favorites for yourself.

I see you have a lot of photos on your blog (the ducks are so cute) and you could probably find even more creative ways to use the tips I wrote about.

Quick question on this, I understand we should also use Image alt/title: At least once in the alt attribute of an image on the page.

And this not only helps with web search, but also image search, which can occasionally bring valuable traffic. But what about duplicate Image alt/title, etc…? Is that an issue when many people are using the same image?

Because a lot of people are using flickr.com to get images…and big chance, 1000s of us probably use the same image, right…

Really appreciate your help, thanks.

Regards,
Dev

Brankica,
What a great thing Ana did by having you guest post here :) . Hats off to both of you!

This was a great reminder for me to use Flickr as I think I’ve only once used a photo from there - and of course credited the image - as I always do. I have no clue why people don’t do that. I always abide by the rule “give credit where it’s due” in anything I write or share or say.

What’s interesting is that I have seen a couple people actually say to the author of a Flickr pic that they’ve used their image and added a link to where they found it. I thought that was a great thing and so I did the same that one time I used an image - plus the author/photographer had actually asked that people do that.

What you mention about adding how it can help bring traffic to your blog is so spot on. As a writer/blogger I often neglect to do the little things that will help improve or generate traffic to my blog. And this is a great reminder and something I should think of much more often.

And another great tip about searching popular authors that update often. I never thought of that.

After reading this post - Flickr will become one of my main sources to find new images - thanks to you. I usually use Google images but you’ve pointed out some great benefits to using Flickr :) . Thank you for that.

You can be sure I will leave the photographer or artist a nice little message (genuine and not spammy) to thank them and show them where they can find it. No worries - it wouldn’t be anything like my blog comments hahaha. I’ll keep it short ;) .

Some excellent points you make here Brankica. Great of you to share.
I’m curious though - have you noticed an increase in your traffic because of Flickr? Is is significant?

Cheers and have a great weekend - you too Ana

I think people are kinda weird about linking out of their site. Like it’s gonna hurt them or something.

I mean you don’t want to link to a lousy spammy one, but we are talking Flickr here. Make the link no-follow if it is that big of a deal and you are not loosing anything.

I love Google images but I have trouble finding the license to some of those images so I end up not using them, in case they are copyrighed.

You know, if you make a FLickr comment as interesting and long as you make a blog comment, you will be even more noticed, how about that traffic :)

Yes, I did see increase of traffic on the site I use it on. I didn’t apply the full strategy to the current blog - yet. But the site I did use it for, at times Flickr was, I believe, 8th source of traffic (the first 7 being the search engines and search engines image searches, image searches cause the images are SEO-ed).

Yeah, Roma decided to be a model and she said she will pose for anyone that need a puppy photo…

I loved the two piece of advice you shared at the end. Find new places to meet people and diversify your link portfolio (I a bad boy and need to be punished for using biz speak :-p )

Thats really sound advice tho. And traffic should be approached as cumulative effort from many sources rather than a magic bullet (or button as you put it).

Dino,
thanks for the comment. I was thinking about the stats but it really works different for different niches.
Then again, no matter what niche you are in, creativity is what will get you on a roll here.

Getting into the new “community” can always result in new connections, different link portfolio as you put it and new traffic :)

Dino, haven’t known you long, but I can tell you are a true geek at heart…LOL Awesome!

@Brankica - Girl you are a force to be reckoned with…you’re popping up everywhere. I love it!

Nice out of the box thinking. It’s what separates the men from the boys (or in our case, the women from the girls ;-) ). Reminds me - I have some create traffic generation postings to do. ;-)

Awesome job…keep them coming!

Michele, thanks for the nice words.
I would say that is what separates us girls from the guys, lol.

I hope I will do even better, I am glad Ana gave me the opportunity to guest post. I guess I am popping up everywhere…
