Friday Tips for Keeps: How to Check PageRank for Your Inner Pages in One Quick Swoop

check pagerank for inner pages image

Tip of the day - pass it on...

The recent Google PageRank update popped up like a thief in the night indeed: since there seems to be no rhyme or reason as to when they update their visible PageRank these days, only one thing remains true - Google keeps us all on our toes.

By the way, many of you seemed to have done pretty well in this update: lots of reports of increased PR - congratulations to you all!

It was also nice to see Traffic Generation Cafe to finally dig out of the trenches of PR0, where it remained for the past year since its inception, to PR4.

However, I wanted to see more than just my home page PR increase.

I wanted to see how the rest of my pages did as well, and that’s where I came to a stumbling block - turns out there’s no easy tool out there to mass check the PageRank for the inner pages of any given website.

I believe I am not the only one with this problem - there were plenty of similar questions on all kinds of forums, all with outdated links to tools that either no longer work or check home page PageRanks for multiple websites at once, not the inner pages.

Once I gave up looking for a solution and thought about it for a second - turned out to be quite a useful exercise! - I realized that I already had all the tools I needed to find all the newly updated with higher PR inner pages of Traffic Generation Cafe.

The Winning Formula

The solution turned out to be very simple.

All I needed was:

1. The search query term site:www.trafficgenerationcafe.com typed into Google search box (to learn more about this and other Google search query terms, check out How to Use Google Search Query Terms to Learn More About Any Site);

and

2. SEO Quake Firefox extension enabled (also available for other browsers).

Allow me to illustrate:

how to use google site:www queryuse seo quake for inner pages pagerank

In order to make the best out of your results, make sure to sort them by “PageRank” as shown in the top left corner - that way all your higher ranking pages will show up at the top, leaving all the “n/a” pages behind.

Marketing Takeaway

SEO Quake is also a great tool when it comes down to quality one-way link building.

You can read more on how I use it to find potential places to link from in this post:

As always, don’t get too hung up on PageRank - it’s only one of 200 search engine ranking factors Google uses.

I suggest you pay more attention to finding authority blogs in a relevant niche - and then comment away!

Got a better way? Comment to show me that you’re alive!

Thanx Ana.
But there should be other ways too. I mean, there is no perfect way, to get clear data in one swoop. :(
Coz, SEO’s surely not that easy.

SEO Quake is gr8, but also annoying & kind of a big mess up, for its purpose.
Atleast SERPs look very messed up with it enabled.
Also, dont think that they all have same fresh statistics. I mean all the other SEO addons too (Firefox).

- I prefer Google toolbar & SEO-SearchStatus (firefox) addons for checking the page rank & other satistics. Using 2 diff tools for verification purpose.
“Aiming for Google, use their tools.”
- Also SEO-doctor is a very helpful addon for understanding a webpage’s statistics.
- Firebug: always useful.

These are the tools that help me understand a page that I visit.

Definitely not perfect, but at least I can do it quickly - checking one page at a time is just not very productive.

Well…… for a site with large no of pages, I guess this is a very useful method then. :)
Thanx.

Hi Ana-

This may well be a side note that I’m hoping you’ll have some insight on; I’ve been using SEO Quake for awhile. But just recently have been having an issue with seo quake and new wordpress pages…the bar’s inserting itself into new pages that I’m creating. I can remove the code in the html version but then it re-inserts itself.

This just started, so not sure what’s happening unless it’s a bug?

If you have any thoughts, I’d love to hear.

Thanks for all of your great info!

Funny you said that: I just noticed the same behavior on a post I was drafting today. It was a post, not a page, but SEOQuake did embed itself into the post. I had to trash the post and move the content to a new one.

Must be a glitch… Hopefully temporary, but disturbing nonetheless.

What a great way to find PR of internal pages, and the ability to sort is also a great help. Surprisingly there were some PR4 internal pages although the main site has only PR2. Thanks for sharing this great information.

What I don’t understand is how commenting on blogs helps improve page rank or search engine ranking as I thought most big blogs used the “no follow” tag for comments…

Some do and some don’t Annabel, but the point is you still need both dofollow and nofollow links to rank well on Google - if you have both types, your linking will appear natural and that’s exactly what you need.

Congrats on your PR as well!

Most of the online internal pagerank checkers I have tried are limit to a certain number of pages like 100 or something. I used to have a decent internal checker that would crawl pages query google and tell you the rank. It did a lot more than 100 internal, but it seems to only work with windows xp and earlier. Can’t seem to get it to work with newer software anymore. Seo quake is decent, but if you make to many queries to fast google may block the rank in the toolbar for your for 30 mins to 1 hour. The key is to check slowly with it.

Another great post, Ana.

Congratulations on that PR 4.

My guesstimate would have been in the ballpark of between PR 3 - 5.
The fact of my turning up to your site and seeing PR N/A was insulting, to say the least.
I new something was amiss, as I seen many sites with almost zilch content(Poor quality) which were ranked between PR 0-3.

Seo quake is a fantastic, easy to use tool. Though, it can become quite addictive.
As to your instructions on using SEO quake(After entering site search query term to Google) to check all pages for relative PR, this would be of great help. Especially for sites with plenty of pages.

My site not being too large, I tend to check my pages(Individually)( PR, Alexa ranking ,etc) usually a little while after publishing a new post, or having gone back and done major renovations on older posts.

Congratulations again, on the move up the PR ladder. You certainly have earned it.

Daniel.

I just added SEO Quake to my firefox browser and went to google to check my site. To my astonishment, my home page is now getting a PR of 3 and many of my posts are getting a page rank of 2.

Considering that my site has only been up since Dec of last year, I am very happy with those results. Now to get more traffic.

I would certainly not “obsess” about PR, but I must admit it is nice to see it trickle up a bit.

I have a pet theory that for the past year plus Google has been throttling the results for some reason. (maybe to get it in peoples head that PR is not that important)

For instance there is no way your site “just” got a PR 4. I am sure it has been that way since (well before) the last update…. at least pr3 during the last.

Anyhow, who can “really” know.

Congrats on the PR4. I got a PR4 this last update too…I know it certainly “feels” good…even if it really means very little.

Ana - Useful tip. Thanks. PageRank is a controversial subject in the search forums. While I would not obsess about it and remain aware that it is nothing more than a metric from Google about the link popularly of a page, I also think it is foolish not to consider this metric when it is fresh. My guestimate is that about 20% of the weight in Google search relevance algorithm is based on link popularity, the metric measured by PageRank. It’s widely assumed that a link profile that includes exterior links to both your landing page and interior pages is optimum for ranking, well, so this tip is great for checking on the link popularity of interior pages

You and I both know, Randy, that Google doesn’t necessarily update toolbar PageRank with their true latest numbers - those “fresh” numbers could already be legging behind by months.

It’s amazing how many bloggers focus on building home page links only, isn’t it? Big mistake.

Ready your article on SEP - nicely done!
