Weekly Marketing Skinny: James Bond, Bigger is Better, Plus Your Traffic Report

latest marketing skinny marchOh, my… what big… everything you have!”

This seemed to be the trend of the past week.

In social media anyway.

How to Get More Facebook Fans

Traffic

orange arrowI’ve got a new FREE “Mommy, Where Does Traffic Come From?” traffic report out, as well as my new Bite-size Traffic Hacks newsletter.

Why?

Because you don’t need another “Ultimate Guide to…whatever“.

You need quick, simple, proven, and actionable traffic bits that will measurably increase your website traffic today.

If that sounds like you, add your email address to the form to the right and I’ll see you on the “in”side.

More Social Media

orange-checkGoogle Plus beats Facebook announcing changes to its newsfeed to the punch and introduces three changes of its own:

  • local review tabs,
  • simpler information editing and
  • bigger cover photos.

Profile pictures are now up to 2120px by 1192px using the 16×9 proportion - yes, that huge.

orange-checkSpeaking of Facebook, its new-look newsfeed features:

  • bigger, more dramatic images,
  • revamped profile display and
  • matching mobile experiences.

However, the biggest change, hands down, is the separation of feeds.

For the first time ever, Facebook is allowing users to filter their content directly from the newsfeed by specific content type.

You can check out the new design here, as well as get on the waiting list to start using it.

orange-checkContinuing the “Bigger is Better” trend, YouTube didn’t want to be left out and announced its own update to the channel design - One Channel.

You can take a look at what’s new and opt in for the new design here.

orange-checkTwitter announced that all of the older versions of TweetDeck will be shut down in early May.

They seems to be the only social media platform going smaller - last week I mentioned that they would be closing Posterous as well.

SEO

orange-checkGoogle’s Matt Cutts was awarded a patent on detecting hidden text and hidden links.

Most of us won’t ever have to worry about it, but it’s always good to remember that you need stay away from any of these:

  • Using white text on a white background
  • Locating text behind an image
  • Using CSS to position text off-screen
  • Setting the font size to 0
  • Hiding a link by only linking one small character—for example, a hyphen in the middle of a paragraph

orange-checkUnconfirmed reports are surfacing throughout the SEO community that Google has penalized yet another link network.

The rumors within the industry are that the link network targeted by Google is named SAPE links.

Personally, I’ve never heard of it.

CommentLuv

orange-checkMany of you noticed that I disabled CommentLuv at Traffic Generation Café.

As much as I’d love to continue providing the benefit of an additional link to my awesome commentators, I’ve run into a stone wall: hundreds (maybe even thousands) of broken CommentLuv links.

With an active reader base like mine - over 26,000 comments in the past 2 years, a certain amount of broken links is to be expected.

Last time I did a comment “spring cleaning”, it resulted in this:

At this point, I don’t have either the time or desire to go through thousands of links, so I took the easiest way out: temporarily disable CommentLuv until I find a better solution to fix the broken links.

Now don’t let this discourage you from using CommentLuv on your blog.

It offers too many benefits for you and your readers, and any potential downside (like too many broken links to control) might never be a problem for you.

Hi Ana,

One more week has passed and its very refreshing to see all the important news collected here which is both interesting and knowledgeable. The James Bond slideshare was awesome. I was so amused and informed by it. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Ana, great SlideShare! It’s really nice to see you embracing the platform. I didn’t realize you were doing them yourself - that is so cool!

I never bother cleaning out my broken links in the comments section - I used to but as you pointed out - broken link checker stopped working and the other tools are too time consuming. I’m not sure how much those broken links in the comment section really impact your blog. I always thought it was more important not to have them within the actual blog post.

I did find an extension for Chrome called Check My Links but I only used it once or twice. Have you tried that one?

Thanks for the skinny!

Reply

Ana Hoffman March 11, 2013 at 12:30 pm

Thanks for coming by, Ileane.

It’s not a problem FINDING those broken links; it’s fixing them, since you have to go over them one by one - there’s not way to automatically unlink them.

Comments do count as a part of your content, so Google could potentially rank your posts lower because of broken links.

And yes, I do create my Slideshare decks on my own… who needs sleep, right?

Reply

Kelvin March 10, 2013 at 5:02 pm

The slide was ok but I would have preferred automated and voice. What happened to no making your viewers work to see your stuff? Just wondering, good stuff by the way, Ana

Reply

Ana Hoffman March 11, 2013 at 5:47 am

That would be called a “video”, Kelvin.

Reply

Kelv March 11, 2013 at 9:29 am

Not necessarily… but it could be a video.

Reply

Karen March 11, 2013 at 3:01 pm

Great slideshare . . . again.
I love that you’re going down that path rather than video Ana. I usually read your stuff in an environment where sound is not a good option. That means I skip over video stuff and your slideshares fit the bill perfectly.
To be honest I find videos frustrating as I have to sit through a bunch of stuff I’m not interested in or already know (padding) in case there’s something good coming up. With slideshare I can set my own pace and there’s very little padding.

Reply

Kelvin (Web Designer) March 11, 2013 at 6:27 pm

I never said anything about a VIDEO and that was not where I was going anyway. Nor am I knocking the slide. It is great and it serves a purpose. Looking at this through a web designer’s eyes with the viewer in mind. Not as a marketer either.

Reply

Ana Hoffman March 11, 2013 at 8:26 pm

Don’t take it personally, Kelvin. :)

Slideshare presentations are great for people who want to look at things at their own pace as opposed to having to pause constantly.

Of course, judging by how many views they get, people do love them. And yes, you can potentially add a soundtrack to a Slideshare, but one still has to flip manually through the slides; that’s the nature of the platform.

Reply

Kelvin (webmaster) March 12, 2013 at 1:53 am

Never, I don’t take this stuff personally. I know what slideshares are for and they do work. I am not apposed to them, so when and how do you introduce an option of views? Do you consider at all? What is your thought process when creating your marketing materials? What do you go by when you create your marketing ads? How do you go about creating your pages? Do you create your pages to match your ads or do you create your ads for each particular pages? Do you create ads to match your site’s or page theme? What is your particular style? Do you have something that shows your pages and/or site’s design process?

Reply

Ana Hoffman March 12, 2013 at 10:19 am

Wow, that’s a lot of questions, Kelvin.

1. I use Slideshare as an independent content source, i.e. I create the decks based on the subject I’d like to rank for on Google, but might be a bit competitive for my blog to show up on the first page. Slideshare has enough authority that I can rank on the first page of Google for just about anything I want.

2. I don’t do ads, but I create all branding based on my site design.

DiTesco March 10, 2013 at 6:38 am

Great stuff as usual Ana. “Skinny” but jammed pack :) BTW, thanks for the mention and putting me on those familiar faces, lol.

As far as CLP is concerned, I have to admit that I have never thought about “broken” links which is perfectly understandable. If you don’t mind me asking, how do you “detect” those broken links. Broken link checker? Or any other tool? Have to run a quick audit on mine to see if all is well..

Finally, and this is another question. Your slides really look good and I can only imagine the work you put into it. Is that PowerPoint you’re using?

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday

Reply

Ana Hoffman March 10, 2013 at 7:17 am

That’s the problem with Broken Link checker, Francisco: it doesn’t detect broken CL links. I’ve tried many tools, but the best (free) one I found was http://brokenlinkcheck.com/.

For my slide decks, I usually use either PowerPoint or Keynote (PP alternative for Mac).

Reply

DiTesco March 10, 2013 at 3:46 pm

Thanks for pointing to that tool, Ana. I am awed… Got some work to do, I got way too many of them (CLP related). It really works well, thanks. There should be a way to get rid of those without having to uninstall CLP or some other way… too time consuming to do it individually.

Andy, help :) Go some ideas..

Reply

Ana Hoffman March 11, 2013 at 5:42 am

Just got an email from Andy - he’s thinking about building a completely new plugin to detect broken CL links. Go, Andy!

Interesting Ana about the broken links from CommentLuv, I’ve been getting a few and wondered about that. Not enough to disable though. I wonder too like Kim mentiond, what about Facebook comments? I don’t like commenting via Facebook but how does it compare to Comment Luv?
There was so much news this week on Social Media site changes it was hard to keep up!
Thanks for the informative post on them and a another great slideshare with James Bond :)

Reply

Ana Hoffman March 10, 2013 at 7:12 am

If I were to do FB comments, I’d definitely do them side by side with the native system, Lisa. I know many bloggers prefer to use the latter, so I’d always want to make sure I give them that option.

I’ll by publishing a “How to Get More FB Fans” post on Tuesday (that’s what I created the Slideshare for), and in it, I’ll go into a bit more detail about FB comments.

Reply

Kimberly Castleberry March 9, 2013 at 3:55 pm

I noticed, Ana, that you mentioned using Facebook comments… but that you’ve chosen not to do that. Can you comment on your thoughts on that? I don’t use them either due to loss of control of the comments however there is a pretty decent plugin now that will pull them into the DB as a “clone” (two instances then exist) so I wonder your thoughts.
Kim

Reply

Ana Hoffman March 10, 2013 at 7:10 am

Only because I wanted to do some research into what plugin to use for FB comments, but didn’t have a chance to, Kim.

I do understand what you mean by “loss of control”; however, in my opinion FB does a great job flagging spam, so I don’t forsee much of it sifting through.

As far as moderation and responding to comments is concerned, I am not sure how it works just yet. Which ones are the best to test?

Reply

Kimberly Castleberry March 10, 2013 at 4:12 pm

Majority of the FB comments plugins fail because they do not put a copy of the comment into the WP database and there is no ability to export the comments to later upload. Imagine if, in a year, you wanted to remove the feature, you would totally lose the comments. There are now a couple plugins that attempt to work around that though all of them have their own unique “quirks”. An example is: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/seo-facebook-comments/ This one is probably the one I’d use as I’ve looked at it repeatedly.

I noticed you’ve left the commentluv/keywordname crowd and gone dofollow. Do you have a post on your thoughts? I seem to have missed something even though I follow your blog.
Kim

Reply

Ana Hoffman March 11, 2013 at 5:46 am

I’ve tried that one in the past; don’t remember why I disabled it. Will do more research…

CL: just what I mentioned in the post - too many broken links to deal with at the moment (I think I have about a thousand of them).

Andy wants to build a plugin to detect them; I might have to wait till he comes up with something.

Reply

Kimberly Castleberry March 11, 2013 at 3:59 pm

With Andy being essentially on serious medical leave at the moment it remains to be seen what the next development cycle of CL will look like. It looks like you’ve possibly disabled the whole CLP plugin rather than just the CL module. If so, what are you using to manage spam?
Kim

Yes, I know… But he seems to want to work nonetheless; making the best of it…

No, I still have GASP and ReplyMe enabled.

He’s actively rolling out betas at the moment and says 404 checks are definitely in the works. Rough ETA is 3-4 weeks on them. You probably saw this but just passing it along in case you didn’t.

Hi Ana,
I can totally understand that with the volume of comments you have had over the years, when the linked sites to those comments go by the way- side and disappear, it would be quite a job to find them all and delete them.
Since you are not actively using CommentLuv at the moment, I am not sure if you know that changes are being made across the platform. Many are going to take effect in the near future.
In Andy Bailey’s last newsletter, he was asking for thoughts on potential improvements on the plug-in. Possibly your dilemma with broken links is one he could work in to it. You might pass it by him and/or Ms. Ileane.

…Just a thought for the day.

Ana Hoffman March 10, 2013 at 7:07 am

I am definitely not done with CL for good, D; will keep track of the changes to see if any of them help me with my little dilemma.

Hey Ana,

Love the James Bond slide share, very entertaining :)

I think its only a matter of time before any blog network gets hit. Whether it’s BMR or SAPE or something else, they will all eventually get hit. My problem with blog networks then is the fact that even after you spend so much time trying to get better rankings using these networks, all that work will eventually go to waste.

That time could have been better spend creating relationships with other bloggers, who would love to link to you. Its kind of like having a really high quality blog network expect, this won’t definitely hurt you in the long run.

Awesome post. It was entertaining and informative.

Very true, Mark - the same goes for building a significan presence on any third-party platform, including social media.

Relationships are just about the only way to ensure stable flow of traffic.

Enjoyed your post, by the way.

Yup, I remember you talking about that on the Imimpact podcast and I couldn’t agree with you more. I don’t think anything is worth investing too much time in if its very existence is out of your control. In my book that’s very close to gambling.

Hi Anna. You might want to check out Broken Link Checker http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/broken-link-checker/ to help handling the broken links in comments.

I’m not sure how it will work with a site of your size, but it is worth looking into. It allows you to have the broken links marked differently for readers. You can also manage the links from within the plugin so you don’t have to go into every post/comment to work with them.

Ana Hoffman March 9, 2013 at 8:35 pm

It doesn’t work, Bill; take a look at the post I linked to.

I like the idea of breaking up large projects into smaller, bite sized piece chunks of advice that are easily digestable and actionable (i.e. your new approach to marketing mail).

I did this recently for one of my niche sites in a very complex area of finance. It’s paying off very well as newsletter engagement/open rates and clickthroughs within (links in the emails) are significantly higher. I am also seeing more viral sharing mainly through Facebook.

Curious how your approach will turn out - please do keep us posted.
