Weekly Marketing Skinny: Google Reader Alternatives? I Haz Them

188 Flares 188 Flares ×

get the skinny on marketing events of past week Imagine this ad on a billboard:

If you feel like the bottom’s fallen out of your world, digest Brand X laxative - It will make the world fall out of your bottom.

It’s all about perspective, isn’t it?

Last week was full of marketing-related happenings that could make you laugh or cry - your choice.

Your Weekly Marketing Skinny

From TrafficGenerationCafe.com

Just in case you were too busy working on your own business instead of religiously reading Traffic Generation Cafe (gasp!), let’s play catch-up:

Google

orange-checkGoogle Reader is gone

Well, it will be anyway; as of July 1, 2013 to be more precise.

This is the part where tens of thousands of people are running around screaming “The sky is a-falling!

If you feel like being one of them, here’s something to make you feel like you have a say in the matter: sign this petition to keep Google Reader running.

Just don’t hold your breath that this petition, despite passing 100K signature mark, will change the world.

If you have better things to do, it’s time to look into alternatives.

Thankfully, they are plentiful:

Share this valuable content with your readers; embed the presentation on your blog (just copy and paste the code below):

Also, take a look at Kristi Hines’ post to see 3 Google Reader alternatives in action:

orange-checkGoogle Alerts next?

Just a wild guess.

I haven’t been using Google Alerts for months now - the only alert I was ever alerted on by Google Alerts was the alert of newly published posts at Traffic Generation Café.

And I am not the only one; Danny Sullivan was complaining about his Google Alert problems as well.

Instead, I’ve been using IceRocket.com in conjunction with Google Reader - a strategy I will apparently have to rethink.

orange-checkGoogle Glass banned from a Seattle bar.

Yep, Sergey Brin was kicked out of a Seattle bar because he was wearing his Google Glass.

In case you don’t know, Google Glass is the Android-powered augmented reality device that, among other features, allows wearers to take pictures of what they’re looking at merely by talking to their “stunna shades”.

The 5 Point Cafe stated:

For the record, The 5 Point is the first Seattle business to ban in advance Google Glasses.

And ass kickings will be encouraged for violators.

SEO

orange-checkGoogle posted the official one page Google SEO cheat sheet designed to dumb down webmaster and SEO related techniques.

Just in case, you don’t know anything about SEO, this won’t help much.

You can download yours right here.

orange-checkPanda #25 update?

There are many webmasters and SEOs believing right now that Google has released an update to their Panda algorithm late Thursday.

Google didn’t confirm it and even said that they are unlikely to confirm future Panda updates since Panda will be incorporated into their indexing processes.

(source)

orange-checkPenguin 4 is on its way.

From SERoundTable.com:

Matt said his team is currently working on it and this will be a big change to how Penguin works.

So when it is released, sometime in 2013, I assume sooner than later, this will send some ripples through the SEO space.

Social Media

orange-checkTwitter now supports line breaks.

orange-check#Hashtags are coming to Facebook

orange-check Facebook just got a lot cooler - imho

Where was this feature hiding all this time???

Prefer to speak English (Upside Down)?

Facebook’s got you covered.

Prefer to speak English (Pirate)?

Facebook’s got your back.

You can find this fabulously time-waster under “General Account Settings”.

orange-checkPinterest has rolled out web analytics.

Here’s how can you get your hands on this new Pinterest data:

How Users Can Get Access To Pinterest Analytics For A Website

Revised FTC Disclosure Guidelines

orange-checkOn a more serious matter: FTC revised their mandatory disclosure guidelines.

You can download and read the full guidance here.

It mostly deals with the expanding use of smartphones with small screens and the rise of social media marketing.

It also contains mock ads that illustrate the updated principles.

The guidelines also take aim at bloggers who provide information or reviews in exchange for products or services.

In one example, the FTC shows a blog post about house paint in which the writer states at the end that she received a free can of paint.

According to the agency, such disclosures must be clear and conspicuous and not tucked away after a series of links or other distractions.

In Case You Are 1/24th Irish

In the spirit of St. Patrick’s day that we’ll be celebrating in the U.S. tomorrow (Sunday):

orange-checkGenealogy Insider has a roundup of Irish genealogy Web sites.

Marketing Takeaway

Well, this wasn’t that bad, was it?

Now that you are properly updated on the latest marketing happenings, the only thing left to do is to share the ish out of this post for me.

Would you do that for me before you run off to enjoy your weekend?

Thank you!

Hi Ana,

I’m so late commenting on this, and reading it for that matter as I just had a chance to read it yesterday.

So, the whole Google reader thing, I’m actually kind of sad about it. Wish they’d stay around because that’s how I keep up with blogs that I don’t frequent as much - meaning I haven’t memorized their publishing schedule as I have yours.

Thanks for the alternatives though, really helpful.

Twitter’s new line breaks… I think it’s neat. Don’t know that I’ll use it much as I’ve grown accustomed to the old formatting, but it’ll be cool to play around with.

The Google glasses?… Now, that’s something new to me. I’d sure love to have a pair of those, sounds fun. :)

Thanks for the skinny and have a great rest of the week.

Ti

Thanks for taking your time to come by, Ti.

I think the mere mortals like you and I will have to wait a loooong time to get our hands on a pair of Google Glass; it hasn’t even been released yet.

Google is really wrecking havoc with many businesses and people who use their services Ana. I hope they don’t get rid of their alerts. I wasn’t a big reader user and am considering feedly for the future. I still like getting emails. I can quickly go through them. Love your slideshare!
I do like the idea of hashtags coming to Facebook. Facebook is finally making some good changes while Google is making awful changes.

Tell the truth, I think Google reader is all about the habit. No one likes to change habits. But tell you that I 100% sure that after the day when G reader will officially stop working thousand of other apps will pop up. And as some scientists have already proved that the total habituation takes about 7 minutes. i got used to new Windows 8 for less than 5 min so the same will be with reader! Cheer up!

Very good point; few people like/welcome changes.

Excellent post, as usual, Ana. :) If I may add one more replacement reader to the list: The Old Reader. Anyone familiar with Google Reader should have no problems working with this one.

Ana Hoffman March 19, 2013 at 8:45 pm

Thanks for the suggestion, Bradley; checked it out, looks simple, clean, and to the point. I like it.

Another great round-up, Ana. My Google alert is rubbish as well. It only announces a few things and those always happen to be blog posts or interviews I’ve done.

Speaking of Irish… I lived in Ireland for nearly 7 years and feel as though I’m part Irish. You don’t live in Ireland for any length of time and not feel that way. As for St. Patrick’s Day parades, they’re never the same unless you’re standing in the rain watching it on Irish soil, with the grey clouds above you.

Hi Ana,

I hope “G” Alerts sticks around for awhile. I like the service when applied towards researching new products by KW to see how popular and/or outreaching on a geo basis it may be.

Great slides - thanks a-bunch - most of these I had never heard of. However, I believe one of your guests here mentioned “feeddemon”. I have heard well of them as well as “feedly”, which you mentioned earlier.
Best,
Wesley

I’ve been working with Feedly; not great, but it does the job.

Thanks for all this news and the reader alternatives, including the link to Kristi’s post. I never really liked Google Reader. I plan to try one of these other sites and hopefully get all my feeds organized.

My family is especially fond of Pirate facebook!

Hi Ana,
I’m curious about know how you can get updates about news among Internet Marketing to let us know all in 1 article? I was reading a few other blogs and I feel like each of them publishing a piece of your content? Thanks Ana for another great weekly marketing skinny!

Ana Hoffman March 17, 2013 at 6:56 am

I use Google Reader. :)

I have never been a Google Reader user but from what I’ve been reading I really don’t have a reason to. Thanks for sharing this Ana. Great information.

Hey Ana,

Feedly is my favorite replacement for Google Reader. Its very simple and it allows you to seamlessly move from Google Reader.

hahah your tweet response to line breaks is hilarious.

Iv’e actually seen quite a few problems with Google Alerts as well. I use it find bloggers publishing posts that are similar to mine. I used to get a ton Alerts on a daily basis, but there seem to be almost no alerts as of late. I have only gotten one alert this entire last week and it’s not because all the bloggers out there suddenly stopped blogging..

Reply

Ana Hoffman March 17, 2013 at 6:48 am

I hear you, Mark - I now get one-two alerts per week.

What part of IceRocket are you using? I know that their Blog Tracker is gone so I’m curious how you’re using this.
Kim

Reply

Ana Hoffman March 17, 2013 at 6:47 am

I simply do a search for my keywords I want to track, Kim, let’s say “trafficgenerationcafe.com”, then add the results to Google reader as an RSS feed. Now minus the Google Reader part, of course. :)

Stan Cahn March 16, 2013 at 1:15 pm

Thanks for the tips.

Reader used to be my go to for inspiration. Now I’ll have to try some of the others.

The inspiration will be there. Just the packaging will change. :)

Yes, my sky fell. I’ve pretty much decided on feedly. I find that rss readers are a more private way to read. I get very few updates in my inbox. And I’m looking forward to the new Facebook hairstyle!

I linked your post in a greader discussion in g+. Thanks for doing the research on that.

Reply

Ana Hoffman March 17, 2013 at 6:43 am

Thanks for the mention, Nicole; always much appreciated.

Most of Google Reader alternatives made it very easy to migrate your feeds, so it shouldn’t be much of a problem.

Brian D. Hawkins March 16, 2013 at 11:30 am

I hope Google Alerts isn’t next but I certainly wouldn’t be surprised. I’ve been using Mention for a while now but, honestly, I have a tough time looking over the daily emails. I need to go in and see if I can filter Twitter out of the mix.

Reply

Ana Hoffman March 17, 2013 at 6:41 am

Mention? I need to check that out…

Fiona March 16, 2013 at 10:05 am

Just sayin’ - I’ve been using Pirate on FB for several years. Discovered it on the same day the first “International Talk Like a Pirate Day” was announced…

Ana, if you read my stuff you will know why I despise the cloud.

And by the way, there is simply NO alternative Google Reader that is worthwhile.

Reply

Ana Hoffman March 17, 2013 at 6:38 am

I completely agree, Dave - that’s why I was making the fun of people who made such a big deal about it.

Reply

Sandy Halliday March 16, 2013 at 8:29 am

I direct all my Google alerts to Google Reader. I find the alerts invaluable for keeping up to speed with what is going on in the detox niche.

Once I discovered how I could get them to Google Reader a few years ago I stuck with it. I find that better than having a daily digest being sent to my email box. The less I have coming into my email the better.

I don’t suppose that the petition will make any difference at all. When Google makes up it’s mind about something nothing will change it.

No one likes changes. Look at all the fuss that is made when Facebook changes things. We all get used to them in the end and find ways round these things. Who knows the alternatives may prove to be better.

Another option might be for Google to sell Google Reader, but I don’t think they’ll do that.

That’s what I do with my Google Alerts as well. WHEN then work. :)

Lot of matter for me to read over the weekend Ana!

Wow…I do need a lot of catching up to do with all these links you shared in the post. I am happy the weekend’s here and I can get down to catch up on all the reading. :)

Oh yes…we all are so dependent on Reader that now looking out for alternatives seem like the only thing each one of is doing, while some have already changed to other alternatives much earlier. I guess we still have sometime before we finally choose it’s alternative. :)

Thanks for sharing this with us, and have a wonderful weekend :)

Reply

Ana Hoffman March 17, 2013 at 6:29 am

I think that’s the great thing about my skinnies, Leena (I hope so anyway, :) ) - you should be able to catch up on everything without having to click on too many links in the process.

What was Sergey thinking?! Not only the 5 Points, but that whole couple of blocks is not really a place you’d want to go walking through, snapping pictures. It’s even been designated as an area of SOAP - Stay Out Of Areas of Prostitution, by Seattle courts, for repeat offenders.

But back to the better stuff - there’s a lot to digest in this issue, Ana! Thinking of digesting - Interesting how the birdie is looking up, yelling, “The Sky is falling,” directly under the ad for ‘the world falling out of your bottom’. :-)

You’re so crafty! HA!

Over the years I’ve tried lots of RSS readers and this one by far has been my favorite. Even more so than Google Reader. However I do think it may be only for Windows.

I suppose everything is in the eyes of the beholder - I looked at their home page and it look like someone just cooked it up in their garage. Didn’t make me feel like it would be safe to download it to my computer… :)

And you are right, it is for PC only.

Thanks, Gerald!
