Weekly Marketing Skinny - February 9, 2013

In this week’s spotlight:

From TrafficGenerationCafe.com

orange-checkTweet Adder Review - the fun thing about this post wasn’t the fact that I want to sell you the software (don’t get me wrong, I DO, but that’s not the point).

What I found in the past was the fact that reviews were hard to market, promote, build links to, etc.

You know, all the good stuff that gets your reviews ranked on Google, brings buyers in, and produces sales.

This time I got creative using the content leverage system I talked about in this post.

So far, I…

The guest post wasn’t about Tweet Adder specifically, of course - you never want to promote an affiliate product in a guest post.

Rather, it was about the video I did about Tweet Adder. You’ll just have to see it for yourself to know what I am talking about.

Results: my review is #7 top landing page for TGC in the past three days.

That’s not bad at all considering the nature of the post.

orange-checkSlideshare traffic experiment

If you are one of my email subscribers and actually open my emails (don’t blush, start actually reading them), you know all about this experiment.

If you are one of my awesome email subscribers who actually helped me with this experiment, THANK YOU.

If you are NOT one of my awesome email subscribers, B 1.

So the point of the experiment was to prove (or disprove) that Slideshare could be a tremendous traffic source - something that I’ve heard many marketers, like Joe Pulizzi, mention lately.

Mauro D’Andrea, who wrote How to Milk SlideShare Homepage for All the Traffic You Can Handle guest post at TGC, was kind enough to come up with a Slideshare presentation I could put my name to.

Following his instructions, I:

  • uploaded the presentation at about 1 pm PST on Thursday;
  • sent an email out to my favorite TGC readers, AKA my email subscribers;
  • asked them to watch the presentation to share the heck out of it;
  • frantically checked the stats every 10 minutes to see how the presentation was doing.

Oh, yes, the whole point of the exercise is to see if we can hit Slideshare’s Top Presentation of the Day, and drive traffic back to Traffic Generation Café.

Progress: the presentation hit the “Hot” spot on all three social media networks on Slideshare’s home page:

slideshare after 18 hours

Unfortunately, it never hit the coveted “Top Presentation of the Day”.

Fortunately, I am now hooked.

I saw the potential of Slideshare for myself, and I want more.

The following Google Analytics stats are for the past 2 days (I just started using Slideshare on Thursday):

orange-checkTraffic case study from Ti Roberts

Now I need to stop talking about myself and mention an incredible Traffic Study by Ti Roberts that was published at TGC on Thursday.

Ti’s blog is still very new; she just started working on it in September.

Yet, in such a short period of time, she manage to drive close to 30K visitors to it - all without any SEO.

As a matter of fact, I am pretty sure Ti is allergic to SEO

Read and learn:

What’s new on the SEO front? Plenty.

orange-checkGoogle PageRank update - February 4, 2013 (the first one this year).

orange-checkYahoo! and Google tie the knot: Yahoo! will now start serving Google contextual ads (not exactly SEO, but interesting).

orange-checkIf you noticed a significant decrease in link count in your Google Webmaster Tools, don’t panic; it’s just a glitch.

This looks like an issue with how the data is displayed in Webmaster Tools, it shouldn’t affect your site’s crawling, indexing or ranking. I don’t have any specifics at the moment, but the team is looking into the details to see what we can do here. Thanks for your patience & sorry for the confusion! ~ Source

orange-checkIf you are an SEO newbie or simply don’t have the time to learn in, but would still like to tap into SEO traffic if possible, here’s a great post to read:

orange-checkYes, I am a big fan of Tom Ewer, ManageWP, and checklists.

Here’s another great one for you:

Social Media

orange-checkThe biggest news here is the fact that Google+ just surpassed Twitter and became the second largest social media network.

Whether those G+ users are active or not is a different story.

Everyone seems to have an opinion on this matter; here’s mine (I told you I was hooked on Slideshare):

The presentation was inspired by Ann Smarty’s Google Plus Fun and Marty Hoffman’s (aka Mr. Ana Hoffman) coined phrase “to be kaepernicked by something“.

By the way, if you loved the presentation and wouldn’t mind sharing it with your followers, tweet the ish out of it for me, okay?

Thank You

To all of you who took your time to show me your support and shared my Slideshare presentation, my wholehearted THANK YOU.

Either way, even if it seems like your effort went unnoticed, your impact was huge.

Ana - have to say I loved the slideshow! And I noticed on your report you are getting the most traffic from Facebook (another success!). I’m starting to see more traffic from the almighty G+ as well - but it all comes down to how well you can figure out how to network on there. :-/

Thanks for another great report! Oh, and do you have any suggestions on how I can break the 1750 follower mark on Twitter? I seem to be pretty stuck on that number and can’t get it any higher.

Thanks, Jason; I’ve been working on Facebook traffic a bit more lately, as I am sure you’ve noticed since you hang around there a bit as well.

Twitter: the only real way to get more followers is to follow more. You can follow up to 2,000 until you come to a screeching halt. That’s when you might have to start unfollowing some folks to even out the numbers. Does it make sense at all?

Hi, I’m just starting out with Tweetadder. If I’d known I would have used your coupon! :(

Anyway, I love it. It’s a pretty powerful tool when you get to grips with it.

Tend to automate everything except actual tweets. It’s nice to maintain a personal touch on that one I think.

cheers

Hi Ana,

I really loved your slideshare presentation. I think it is a wonderful way to get the attention of your future followers.

You made me remember when I was in school, and had to prepare a topic to present in class. Wanting to attract attention, not only of my colleagues, but also my teacher’s, I used to prepare a slideshare presentation. Guess what, A + … always!

I think I’ll try this to promote my blog and to spread my posts.

Love!

It’s great to see that your presentation is doing pretty well (when I’m writing this comment it has 1,300+ views and it’s hot on Twitter).

I’m a little disappointed by my presentation, but I’m sure that the our next one will go much better.

Hi Ana, very interesting post. I don’t understand why but sometimes I receive your emails and sometimes not so given that I don’t always remember to check I miss some posts.

Anyway, great your experiment worked. I haven’t something to put on Slideshare but it seems a very good source of traffic also because Google with its everlasting updates it’s really becoming boring at least.

I find interesting that I increased my traffic but earnings with AdSense decrease which simply means that contextuality is just a theory but I’m pretty curious to see what happens to Yahoo. :)

Anyway I started appearing also on Bing so that’s fine.

Now I’ll go reading those articles on editing old posts, something that I begun doing this week, think about coincidences.

Have a great Sunday!

That’s one of the reasons I am so fond of Slideshare, Andrea - Google rankings. Much easier to rank a presentation over a blog post.

Don’t know much about AdSense to comment.

Wow about G+ surpassed Twitter, it seems that I’ll spend more time there!

Help! I can’t keep up!

I work hard all day building traffic, learning how to do stuff - and not just any old stuff - I learn from Ana (shameless grovel) and a few other bloggers I respect and ‘listen’ to - I have to do research for every article (and not just keyword research) because I try to deliver quality, I battle daily with my email Inbox (because you can learn a lot from other people’s emails), I send out emails to my list, I check the stats and health of my website, I collect freebies and then have to find time to read (or skim!) and get new ideas…..it’s overwhelming. And that is just my ‘business’ life.

Slide-share is entertaining, at least Ana’s slideshare is - I’m too busy to watch any others - but I won’t be signing up for it - there are too many other more pressing skills to conquer - not the least of which is learning how to make money!

I envy people like Ana who have been blogging for several years and have the basics nailed, and money coming in. In fact I dream of one day being in the same position - but for now, learning about and using slideshare is one more thing to tag to the BOTTOM of my To Do list.

Must dash…..lots to do!

Oops I should have clicked the like button to get a choice of posts to link to, but….it’s not there. I clicked the like button in the sideabar….still no Like button in the Comments section, and still no choice of 10 posts.

And, even though my link looked dofollow before I posted it, it did not turn out to be dofollow link after posting.

Just wondering why. Have you been talking to Lisa2createawebsite?

Reply

Ana Hoffman February 10, 2013 at 8:21 am

I completely understand, Carol.

And believe it or not, I am just as overwhelmed and the money isn’t pouring in just yet.

Here’s the reason I pushed Slideshare to the top of my priority list: https://trafficgenerationcafe.online/content-marketing-leverage-system/

It’s all about focusing on things that bring the most return.

Once I create a Slideshare presentation (which has a better chance of ranking on Google and bringing in even more traffic that a blog post at TGC), I turn it into a video, then into a PDF, so working on one piece of content actually means that I have several pieces of content that work for me all over the internet.

We HAVE TO learn to cut down on the noise, Carol, and focus on things that actually move our businesses forward.

Believe it or not, spending time making Slideshares is a part of my priority list.

Anna, it is awesome to have you have back, missed you and your knowledge very much. This weekly update that you are doing, is going to be very helpful for me. Busy weeks make for little time to keep up.

I didn’t realize you were working on the slideshare presentation, sounds like a great way to drive traffic, but also to be social. Seems that social on the internet is the newest and best way to lean on the fence and visit with neighbors and friends, all done while sitting in one’s easy chair at home.

The Google PR update pushed my business homepage up to 1. That is really awesome. Thank you for all that you do with your research and your reporting Anna.

I am so glad this is helpful, Paul. I’ve been avoiding keeping up on the trends because I always have better things to do; yet it’s so important to be in the know.

This way it’s a win-win: my readers and I know what’s going on without spending hours sifting through the noise, and I get a post out of it.
