In the marketing spotlight this week:

♨ Google’s Penguin 3.0 update is here; ♨ Lower rankings with multiple DMCAs; ♨ Mobile SEO: be number one or don't bother; ♨ Facebook unveils Rooms; ♨ Zuckerberg did Q&A; session in Mandarin Chinese; ♨ Ello raised $5.5 mil and converted to PBC; ♨ Tsu: the good, the bad, the neutral; ♨ Breaking: Sundar Pichai is the new Man in Google; ♨ Google's new Inbox; ♨ full iPad access to the Buffer dashboard; ♨ ...and more.

Don’t have the time to read all the marketing news, blog posts, announcements, and other content related to SEO/social media/online marketing published each week?

I’ve got you covered.

I sift through trillions (well, hundreds) of online publications to stay on top of marketing news that might affect your online business.

Let’s get to it.

SEO

Google’s Penguin 3.0 update is here - here’s the skinny on what we know so far.

Could you still do well in search rankings without doing any link building at all, relying instead on the strength of your content to be deemed relevant and important by Google? Rand Fishkin of Moz answers.

If your site has received multiple DMCAs, you can expect that it will begin ranking lower.

The new study found that if you do not rank in the number one position in the mobile results, the click-through rate drops off significantly, so much so that ranking number barely matters.

Yep, we could’ve told them so. After Google complies with German publishers removal requests, they beg to be re-included.

Google has expanded Knowledge Graph with the ability to recognize video games.

Social Media

Despite building its entire existence around real identities, Facebook unveiled Rooms, its new anonymous app that lets you create places for the things you’re into, and invite others who are into them too.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg conducted an impressive Q&A session this week entirely in Mandarin Chinese.

Link posts with large thumbnails made it to Google+ app for Android - 7 months after rolling out to the web.

Ello will remain third-party ad-free. For good. To assure that Ello always remains ad-free, Ello converted to a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC).

More Ello: Ello has raised $5.5 million in new venture funding, according to CEO Paul Budnitz.

Buffer gives its users easier ways to share to social networks from Apple’s mobile devices plus full iPad access to the Buffer dashboard - for the first time.

Goodbye Email & Social Logins? Twitter’s new free service Digits is online sign-in protocol that uses telephone numbers to authenticate identity.

See you in your inbox!

Marketing This & That

HUGE Google news: Google chief executive Larry Page is stepping back at the giant technology company, while senior vice president Sundar Pichai will be assuming more responsibility.

Check out Google’s new Inbox: by the same people who brought you Gmail, but it’s not Gmail: it’s a completely different type of inbox, designed to focus on what really matters.

You know those annoying ads that automatically play video or audio whenever you visit a website? There’s an easy setting in Google Chrome that will turn off the autoplay.

    Hey Ana,

On the recommendation of some Skype friends, I recently signed up for Tsu. I’ve been reading up on it, but admit, most of the reviews are just feature regurgitations. I saw a mention of it in your TOC for this issue but no further info/links. If you have any info you came across for this week’s Marketing Skinny, would love to see it.

Mahalo (thank you) Ana for this awesome newsletter/blog. As CEO at Aloha Hawaiian Vacations, a moderate size family owned company, I am mainly responsible for our website and its SEO results.
This responsibility is often overwhelming to me, as this is not my forte, but the info you share greatly helps even an SEO “layperson” like myself greatly. Keep-up the great work!! Aloha Ana, Wayne Overman
PS: Reading TGC has become a part of my Saturday morning ritual.

I really appreciate you taking your time to let me know that, Wayne. All the best to your business (and by the way, I am currently researching a what looks to be promising SEO course; will keep you updated) and look forward to ‘seeing’ you in my next Weekly Marketing Skinny!
