We all want to increase our blog traffic.
We also want to do it NOW and for FREE. Did I get it right so far?
In the last post, you got the essentials on how to use a blog carnival as a free traffic generation method.
Now it’s time to check out blogging contests.
Yes, they are popping up as wild mushrooms all around the blogosphere.
To be quite honest, I’ve been ignoring them for a while, not wanting “to waste my time” on such a silly thing. However, once I actually checked into it, I entered my first one ever and very glad I did.
Here’s why.
Benefits of Blogging Contests
1. Make Money
Let’s face it: this is the primary and the best reason to enter any contest.
All contests offer some sort of a prize to the winner or top winners. It can be anything from cash prizes to something useful for your business.
Example: I just entered BlogEngage.com Best of the Guest Blogger Contest. Top prize $1000 in cash and GROWING. Other prizes include free 1 year hosting, business cards, free WP Premium Themes, etc. See the full list of sponsor below.
2. Exposure
So let’s say you don’t win any cash or other prizes.
Is it still worth it? You bet!
Every contest is being widely advertised by the host, the sponsors, and the contestants - triple exposure! You gain access to audiences you could only dream of reaching through your blog alone.
You gain name and brand recognition as well as “let’s see what else he/she has to offer on their blog” benefit.
3. Free Traffic Generation
And once you hook the contest audience with your brilliant article, like this one:
…they have no choice, but to come back to your blog and see what other great content you offer there.
4. In-Content Backlinks
There are many types of backlinks you can get from other blogs.
The most popular way to get such links is through blog commenting; nothing wrong with that.
However, the most valuable type of links you can get from other blogs is IN-CONTENT links, meaning links that placed WITHIN the post vs added in comments.
Here are some ways to get that done:
- Guest Blogging
- Blog Carnival Submissions
- Contest Submissions
- Just awesome content that people want to naturally mention in their posts

5. Monetize Your Blog

Marketing Takeaway:

Just make sure to look for contests that are:
- in your niche
- hosted by a reputable blog
- offer prizes that you can use for your business
How to find great contests
Social media is always your best bet.
Follow bloggers like Kristi Hines, who somehow knows of every single contest out there and even wins a lot of them. Ask around. Google it. Look and you shall find, in other words.
