Sunday Coffee with Ana: Quit Blogging Now or Forever Hold Your Peace

coffee ana 293x300 Sunday Coffee with Ana: Quit Blogging Now or Forever Hold Your PeaceThis morning we are starting a 12-hour drive back to sunshine from the cold, but beautiful Colorado.

12 hours in the car with a 4-year-old… that should be fun. icon smile Sunday Coffee with Ana: Quit Blogging Now or Forever Hold Your Peace

However, I didn’t want to leave you without an assignment for today - as if you have nothing better to do than to hang out with me this Sunday, huh?

This one will be a bit different: a lot of food for thought, not many/any solutions, but has the potential to change your business for the better.

Do let me know what you think in the comments.

This is what you wanted to know in the past week:

Questions

1. Feedburner and CommentLuv Links

When Katie Goode from Living Anxiety Free made a comment on one of my latest posts, Rick LaPoint from Internet Marketing responded to her comment:

Hi Katie,

Do you intentional have your link going through feed burner?

Rick

I don’t know if Katie had a clue what Rick was talking about, but I did.

You see, 25 x 25 twitter icon Sunday Coffee with Ana: Quit Blogging Now or Forever Hold Your Peaceunless you changed your default Feedburner setting, all your CommentLuv links point to Google. If what I just said doesn’t make any sense, take a look at the screen shot below:

commentluv link Sunday Coffee with Ana: Quit Blogging Now or Forever Hold Your PeaceI’ve known of this problem for a while and definitely fixed my settings, but never bothered to let my readers know that they needed to do the same. icon sad Sunday Coffee with Ana: Quit Blogging Now or Forever Hold Your Peace I saw so many post on the subject, I didn’t want to talk about it on TGC.

However, now that I see that some of my readers could use that knowledge, I’ll send you to where you can find the answers - where I originally found them.

One last thing: how do you know you have this problem? When you post a comment with your CommentLuv link, hover over that link and see if you see that funny feedproxy-blah-blah link instead of yours.

If you do, go over to Brian Rogel’s post and it’ll take you just a couple of minutes to fix it, if that.

2. Trackbacks the RIGHT way.

As I was working on linking the “parties involved in the previous question” (I am sure you’ve noticed that I always try to give a link to the person asking question, I noticed something on Rick’s blog that I wanted to bring your attention to.

You see, when I link to anyone’s blog, I ALWAYS link to a post, never to the home page (unless there’s a special reason for it).

The reason for that is trackbacks. If you have no idea what trackbacks or pingbacks for that matter are, read these posts:

So I was looking for a blog post on Rick’s blog to link to and I found one of his latest:

Popular blogs? What’s up with that? - I immediately thought. Is Rick snubbing and not including me in the list of “popular blogs”?

So I scroll down - with baited breath, I am sure - to see if I am included and here it is! My pretty, if I may say so myself, face with a brief description of my blog.

Why didn’t I know about it?

Because Rick link to my HOME PAGE and home pages can’t receive trackbacks. So my blog was never notified that it was mentioned on a different blog, making Rick wonder if I, in turn, snubbed him. icon smile Sunday Coffee with Ana: Quit Blogging Now or Forever Hold Your Peace

Here’s the advice I give in one of the posts I refer you to above:

I noticed that many bloggers use trackbacks incorrectly.

Many of you mention other blogs and bloggers on your sites, but when you link to them, you link to THEIR HOME PAGE.

BIG mistake!

Home page doesn’t have comments, so those trackbacks have no way of showing up in their comment queue. That basically means they will most likely never know you linked to them.

Solution: ALWAYS link to a post. Any post.

Always. icon smile Sunday Coffee with Ana: Quit Blogging Now or Forever Hold Your Peace

3. Do comments REALLY bring traffic?

Truthfully, I have no idea.

BUT… I am going to find out.

Lisa Drubec of TheFriendlyBlogger.com is actually doing all the work; I am just the voice behind the throne.

You see I wasn’t happy to just assume that we are getting some traffic from commenting; I wanted PROOF.

So we set up an experiment with Google Analytics tracking and all to see what results we’ll actually get.

Why am I telling you that now?

Only because I am very excited about it. I’ll let you know when the post will be ready to be published.

4. Less better than more?

“I have 2 sites but now thinking about about merging my fine art and illustration/graphic and use WordPress. Do you this this is good or not?”

I would ALWAYS recommend to scale down. It’s hard enough to maintain one blog well; I can’t imagine how some of you have 2-3 blogs at a time.

The only way it makes sense as if you have small niche sites - in that case, the more the better is the name of the game.

5. Category Listings

“In wordpress, it’s good to have category or no category in our post, i mean on niche website..regarding to good SEO.” ~ Kyro

caterory Sunday Coffee with Ana: Quit Blogging Now or Forever Hold Your Peace

Good question and the answer goes against what I am doing on my own blog. icon smile Sunday Coffee with Ana: Quit Blogging Now or Forever Hold Your Peace (I will have to change it).

For SEO, it’s best not to display categories in your posts unless you want your category pages to rank for category keywords.

Speaking of which, I just read a great post on the subject; here’s the link and you should definitely check it out:

I am planning on fixing up a few things around TGC based on that! icon smile Sunday Coffee with Ana: Quit Blogging Now or Forever Hold Your Peace

6. Podcasting

I am sure Hector Cuevas intrigued all of us with his guest post on podcasting and how we can use it for your businesses. If you have no idea what I am talking about, just take a look at this post:

Well, the smart dude that he is, he is taking it waaaay further than a bunch of guest posts and what he is doing with it goes to the very heart of the video you just watched (you did watch it, didn’t you?)

So after you are finished commenting on this post, head over to http://www.podcastingforbloggers.com/ and check out how Hector decided to take his business a step further than most of us ever will.

By the way, this is not an affiliate link and there’s nothing to buy there.

Traffic Generation Cafe Lineup

Here’s what’s coming up this week on TGC:

Monday: How Two Days Without Internet Made Me Stumble Upon a Great Idea

Self-explanatory title (gotta love those); read it and you’ll know what I am talking about. Hint: it has to do with a brilliant way to comment on other blogs.

Tuesday: Search Engine Ranking Tip: How to Search Google Incognito

When it comes down to finding out accurate search engine rankings of your site for any given keyword, you’ve got to turn to learn how to turn off Google infamous personalized search. I’ll show you how.

Wednesday: How KeywordLuv Can Get You on the First Page of Google

Not another KewordLuv post, although I do talk just a bit about what the plugin can do for your blog. There’s something very cool you’ll see in this post - free effortless search engine rankings.

Thursday: 3 Types of Blogs and 3 Ways to Handle Them

The post title sucks and I am still working on the draft, but the main idea will be to analyze the 3 main reasons to create a blog and help you decide what’s important and what isn’t base on your goals. That’s right: your reason for starting a blog can make a HUGE difference on how often you publish content, what kind of content, how much traffic you need to generate, etc.

Friday: No good post title yet icon smile Sunday Coffee with Ana: Quit Blogging Now or Forever Hold Your Peace

Remember that post I wrote last week about Why All Your Make Money Blogging Efforts Will Fail Without This? Well, in that post I asked you to fill out a short poll to determine where you stand with list building and what you need to lean to improve your stats. Some of the final numbers were very surprising, but what intrigued me was the fact that over 6% of you said that you list was growing by leaps and bounds. Also, about 37% said that the list is not growing as fast as you’d like to, BUT it’s growing.

Sooo… This is the time when you cough up the best list building secrets you have in the comments and I will compile a post based on that (with links to the original sources - you - of course).

Sunday: Sunday Coffee with Ana

I am hoping to resume the live broadcasts, so you’d better rally up the troops. Either way, I’ll see you at TGC!

List Building Week…

is coming after this one.

I already have some great list building experts sharing their wealth of knowledge on the topic. If you have anyone in mind who is great at list building and would love to see him/her on my blog, let me know.

Also, if you have anything incredible to contribute on the topic, I am all ears!

Marketing Takeaway

Have an incredibly great week, everyone, and please pray for our safe trip back - it looks like we might have to drive though some snow storms.

Great Rant!

It has given me some food for thought about developing a niche site.

Ana,

I really enjoyed this video, I had a ‘lightbulb’ moment. I have
been thinking about a niche site and you shed some light on it
for me.

Everything you talked about makes total sense and we sometimes
get so hung up on creating a new blog post and getting our Alexa
rating down but there is no purpose to it all without a true direction.

Thanks for sharing, especially while on vacation.

You made some good points here. And no, its not a rant :)
I’ll drop a couple of thoughts that were roaming my mind while watching the video (is it only me that has the problem with commenting on a video?)

So many people are blogging about blogging. Which is mostly OK, there are many blogs and bloggers out there, it’s a huge target. But everybody is blogging about blogging for money. And that’s a huge miss. Why everybody is squeezing in the same part of a huge niche?

E.G. I am blogging a personal opinion blog on several subjects. It’s a disaster decision money-wise, but my aim is not to make money by blogging. Wild-dream is to grab a book deal (yeah, it’s a long run, I’m aware of that). And there are many other people out there blogging with the similar logic. We need traffic as well. We need blogging techniques as well. And we have to extract them from blogs that are targeted to money-makers. Some of those are useful. But many if not the most of them, are, for our needs, a complete miss. It’s fun to watch how so many pro bloggers talking about exploring different niches are missing the one that is right behind the corner and is completely uncovered.

On the other hand, all the blogs that sell the same affiliates to each other as you pointed out, are just pyramidal scheme. have you noticed how many of blogs about blogging has less than 100 subscribers? Does that make any sense? No, it doesn’t. It’s just the pyramid coming to it’s base and there’s no growing more. The bubble is ready to burst.

This is something I realized a couple of months back. Now I’m constantly thinking of what I can do that no other mom blog offers, or at least not many offer. I have so much to say, I’m contemplating an eBook - but not sure of the time investment being worth it in the end.

Hi Ana

You pose a really interesting question here, namely are we just generating work without generating money, I for one had no idea just how much time I would end up just answering comments

I am hopefully 1 step ahead in having created my own products which I am in the process of launching shortly

As is so often the case you have set us all thinking with this

Hi, Ana. You said in the video that you don’t have solutions, but you’re wrong. You do. I don’t know much about niche blogs, but I know that I tried for only one month to monetize my blog with adsense. Time enough to figure out that i didn’t want to do a lot of work to put a few coins in my pocket. The answer was (is): your own product. I write and sell ebooks and videos and I can tell you that my first sale was a hundred times bigger than a whole month of adsense (adsense makes no sense). So, you do have the answer. Sell your own product. And by the way, your blog is really good.

Ana,

Loved your message today and it’s been something that is on my heart as well.

I believe that so many of us got into the blogging niche for our home based businesses, but I’m finding myself venturing down new paths I never expected.
I’ve been working on a product, using several free training webinars I’ve been hosting as a way to create it.

I started the Prove it Blog Challenge last month to help others get their blogs rolling and as much as I’m loving it, I feel somewhat frustrated about the way it’s going. Everyone is doing fantastically well, but I feel like people are slipping through the cracks as much as I am trying to keep up with everyone. Kind of like being a hostess at a party and not being able to get around to visit with everyone.

In order to “solve the problem” of not being able to help everyone in my challenge, this week I’ll be launching the Clever Marketer Mastermind Community on my blog, a membership site with monthly trainings and a forum to carry on the tradition of the EIF commenting tribe on a bigger scale.

I struggled with the decision of how much to charge, wanting to keep it affordable, but still make it worth my efforts. In end I am here to make money like you are, and a monthly membership site is one possible way I can see some increased consistency in my income. I’m having a free level, but two different paid levels with training and bonuses for each. I have no idea if it will work, but I’m all about giving it the good ole’ college try!

I’ll have to check out your post on tracking the comments! I’ll be excited to hear what you find out.

I love your niche site idea and your video inspired some fun brainstorming for me! Thanks for being so honest and opening up your heart to us. I am grateful to you as always.

Heather

p.s. Sorry I’ve been MIA for a while…I’ve been busy at work-behind the scenes-getting the membership and forum ready for it’s grand opening!

:)

I feel like I’ve been a little MIA lately in the blogging word because the web development side has been practically running my life. I was up until almost 5am last night writing close to 30 pages of proposals and contracts.

I also co-founded a nonprofit organization which launch about three weeks ago. I couldn’t be more excited about how quickly it’s taken off, but it also hasn’t exactly helped in easing my time constraints.

I skipped the questions on your post as I have some questions from your video :)

You mentioned that you’re going to have a slight shift in direction. Does that mean that you’re going to be creating products to answer the questions that people here are asking you, or something else?

At the risk of pissing off my fellow readers, from the sound of it, the people coming here are putting the cart before the horse, meaning they set up a site w/out doing the initial keyword and other research necessary. Is that an accurate statement?

Also it sounds like I’m in a good position myself as I have 8 niche sites running under a variety of conditions. I also have many products I’ve created on different sites, and am running surveys to determine which products to create next. That’s all in addition to the affiliate products I’m selling via my authority and niche sites.

You’ve got me curious now to see how things progress here over the coming weeks and months. Perhaps you didn’t mean to hit that chord in your video, but you sure did.

Thanks as always Ana.

Hi Ana,

For a video done away from home, that’s really good.

Going straight to the questions u raised, yes it’s really a vicious cycle of Bloggers marketing to each other. I must say that I always wonder if bloggers make money from marketing these products when all of them have the same products for sale.

One way of making money that you should really look into is selling ad space on your blog. You told me once before, in your reply to my comment, that you do not intend to do that. But I think you should have a re-think. A lot of experienced bloggers count that as one of the assured ways of making money with a blog or even a niche site if you have the traffic. You name your price, the advertizers will com knocking and you are sure of a certain amount of money each month.

I don’t know why u decided against ads but those tools you have on your left nav sure looks like sponsored ads to most people so why not put some banners on there as well and get paid for just displaying them rather than wait till someone buys before you earn money?

Those are my 2 cents. :)

Reply

Ana February 21, 2011 at 3:45 pm

I think you are selling yourself short, Maky - that was almost 10 cents worth of advice. :)

Selling ad space… Still not sure about it. You see I am all about trust, and if I can’t vouch for my advertisers, I’ll have a problem. If I ever find a perfect combo of a great product and good ad price, I’ll think about it. :)

Actually, now that I though about it for whole 30 seconds, I do like it more and more…

Hey Ana, you’re so awesome. Thanks for the mention, hopefully some of your readers take advantage of podcasting as a way to grow their business.

I saw your video and you raised a very interesting question. Corbett Barr talked about this briefly in a post he did on his blog. He says that everyone is trying to teach others how to become social media marketers - I think it goes a lot further than that and you definitely hit nailed it with this video.

We’re selling to each other… THAT is the real problem..

I, too, made a conscious decision a few months ago to make sure my content wasn’t just geared towards the “marketing” crowd because there are other people out there who (unbelievably so ..Lol) just want to learn how to build a business around their own passions.

Maybe they’re really good with helping new moms with their newborn or they love helping people hook up their cars and make them faster.. whatever is it, WE have the KNOWLEDGE to help them take their passions from HOBBY to BUSINESS.

Let’s do this Ana..
thanks again

I have to admit it was a bit sad watching your video this morning, I din;t feel like adding the Kamchatka after that!! :)

I understand exactly what you mean and I do think product creation is the way to go. Another thing I have been pondering a lot lately is this:

You have built up a HUGE LOYAL fan base. I think most blogs have loyal readers. Those are not the people we market to, they are not our customers. They have seen all of our offers and heard our marketing experiences.

It’s increasing our search engine traffic that will bring more people interested in products that we use to build our blogs successfully. So I struggle myself with referring traffic/organic traffic.

And truth be told, I dont want to keep marketing to my loyal readers. They know if they are interested in something, they can come to me or ask my opinion.

I think I am babbling…lack of vodka I believe. I am pretty sure you get my point though. :)

Hi Ana,

I’m not sure if you’re asking for suggestions in your video, but I think with all the free content on your blog that can actually help people market their site no matter what their niche, you deserve to be little more forward about your products. As you say, you are interested in making money. I know what your affiliates are, but I really have to dig deep to find your connection with yournetbiz.com. As you said, a blog needs a product, and some of your readers might want to use that as a product.

My niche is much different than yours, but I, like everyone need to learn how to generate traffic. You’re number one in your field. I have a core product and some affiliates. But I wouldn’t try to affiliate market in your niche. Mine is in cards and gifts. So my products and affiliates are in cards and gifts.

I hope I haven’t confused you, hope that I contributed to the discussion.

I was going for more of “think of your own blog” kinda thing, but you are so right, Lou - I do have a business; why not connect it to my blog?

Either way, there’s always someone else who does the same thing; it’s up to us to be different enough and stand out.

It sounds like your vacation gave you plenty of time to think about your blog, Ana. It’s nice to unplug from time-to-time and be able to really look at what we’re doing and why we’re doing it. It can be so difficult to get this point of view when you’re in the day-to-day hustle of posting, commenting, and engaging with others through social media.

I just found out last night that I was listed in a write up at Blog Engage as one of its top male users. It doesn’t make me look so involved though when it was over two weeks old before I saw it and was able to comment on it. Your tip on always linking to a post so the person knows is a good one. If you’re not going to do this then give them a shout out via Twitter or Facebook letting them know they’re being mentioned in the post.

Safe travels, Ana. Thanks for the Sunday morning tips.

Congrats on BlogEngage write up - as you said, too bad you almost missed it!

Hi Ana,

I didn’t think you snubbed me. I was intentionally linking to Home Pages because that is where I wanted visitors to arrive. My list was about websites, it was NOT about specific site articles. At the time I published the list, I certainly understood Trackbacks. Most everyone discovered the list as a nice surprise when coming around for their usual visit :-)

From my experience, leaving comments bring me traffic. And others I have talked to have had the same experience. Although anyone’s mileage may vary, an interesting comment on a ComLuv site has always been successful for me.

:) I hope you didn’t take is as my criticizing your post in any way, :) I was just disappointed I never heard of the post - you know boost of ego and all… :)

Either way, glad I found your post and I just wanted my readers to take advantage of trackbacks to the fullest. Thanks for the mention and letting me use your blog as an example!

Have a good way home, Ana! I am playing with Thesis and I am happy :-) ))
I absolutely AGREE about creating own products. I don’t have one (actually I sell my courses, I am a teacher) but in this period I am thinking about it and beginning to create something. It is necessary, I think.
About you and your blog…what about selling educational trainings instead of only “tools”? Consultations? And do you know that so many people need your services but they don’t know? I have the experience of my students. They learn ayurvedic massage and then some of them struggle to work because they don’t know how to market their job. They can’t imagine the power of a blog. My personal commitment is to help them find a new way to be wealthy…
Maybe your target could be not only traffic generation, but traffic generation for people who…and you choose.

Next Sunday I teach in a seminar so I can’t be here anyway…see you soon :-) )))

All great ideas, Elena.

I would love to create my own product (I’ve got a few ideas - just need some sleepless nights to actually do it :) .

Services - great thing, and I do do that. However, I want to come up with something that is more hands-free.

Still working on it….

Miss you next Sunday; have a great seminar!
