I give it to you, you are the Queen of networking Ana. There are only a handful of bloggers that take time to answer all their comments and looking around, I think they are mostly influenced by you. If I talk to a wall when I comment on a blog, I will not comment on that blog even if it is dofollow to the 3rd order. The only exception is when I see that a lot of commenters are asking questions without getting answers from the blog owner and I have the answer to their questions, I will then step in and help out or when I want to engage with the other commenters. I will understand though when in the future, you can’t meet up with replying all the comments because they are just too much (look what is happening now :) cos you went away for a few days!).

I like your new side banners better. Maybe because it is not generic. And it caught my attention the first day you put them up and that’s what you want, isn’t it? :)

Talking about design, did you create your opt-in form using Aweber forms or did you design it yourself? I had a look at their forms and they were too generic and they say you can edit them, still I’m curious. And pls which software did you use to create you e-book image? I love it.

Thanks for the pinging comments tip, it will be very handy. Though I’m sure you know this already, I find that my comments on your blog are indexed quickly, I guess it is because you update very often and crawlers come by on their own. :)

Alexa ranking: What tip do you have for people in a non-techy niche? Alexa ranking is mostly based on traffic from browsers with Alexa Toolbar installed. In some niches, the only traffic from a browser with Alexa toolbar maybe from the blog/site owner himself! :(

I got to run … my babies are calling.

Keep up the good work.

  • How KeywordLuv Can Get You on the First Page of Google
One thing I like about your comments section is that the keyword links to a new page where that particular comment appears like a post with all the other comments below and I would like to know if this is done using the same KeywordLuv plugin. I see this as beneficial to the blog owner because it means that for every comment, you have an extra page indexed wink* wink*. This is why blogs with this plugin have thousands of indexed pages though they have only a few hundred posts.

I don’t quite agree with the statement: “Reward your commentators by separating their name from their keywords in the link to their website, giving them improved anchor text.” because the stand-alone keyword links to an inner page and from this inner page (explained above), the link to the commenter’s website is in the format name@keyword instead of just the keyword.

I believe that even though this KeywordLuv is touted as beneficial to the commenters, in the end, it is the blog owner that benefits from putting it on their blog.

  • Sunday Coffee with Ana: Quit Blogging Now or Forever Hold Your Peace
    Hi Ana,

For a video done away from home, that’s really good.

Going straight to the questions u raised, yes it’s really a vicious cycle of Bloggers marketing to each other. I must say that I always wonder if bloggers make money from marketing these products when all of them have the same products for sale.

One way of making money that you should really look into is selling ad space on your blog. You told me once before, in your reply to my comment, that you do not intend to do that. But I think you should have a re-think. A lot of experienced bloggers count that as one of the assured ways of making money with a blog or even a niche site if you have the traffic. You name your price, the advertizers will com knocking and you are sure of a certain amount of money each month.

I don’t know why u decided against ads but those tools you have on your left nav sure looks like sponsored ads to most people so why not put some banners on there as well and get paid for just displaying them rather than wait till someone buys before you earn money?

Those are my 2 cents. :)

  • Blog Audit Friday: Lend a Helping Hand to Traffic Generation Cafe
    First impression / Design
Nice looking blog with cute coffee cups, I like the contrast between the background color and the main page. Nice choice of colors too. I am not a huge fan of personal photos in the header (kind of screams MLM marketing to me), I believe the one in the footer, your gravatar and in the “Article by …” box is enough for me to know who owns the blog. You use the same photo everywhere which is good. (except on YouTube!)

It does not really matter on which side your content is so long as you code your website such that the spiders see your content first (for good SEO) and looking at your source code, I see that you’ve done exactly that so u are fine. Your story that you put ur vertical nav on the left so people can see your opt-in first is well … funny! Is subscribing the first thing I do when I come to a blog? NO. If I like a blog enough to want to subscribe, I will dig out the opt-in form wherever it may be!

    Attention Grabbing
I love your post titles and how you play with the words and this is what makes me want to read the post but from SEO point of view, I have always wondered if there’s any penalty for reusing such phrases as “Blog Audit Friday”, “Link Building” etc in your post titles. How do search engines view all the different posts with the same phrase in their title?

I love the one line paragraphs with all the white space. This is the No 1 thing that makes me read to the end of each post! Maybe the font can be made a tad bigger?

    Opt in
Even though I did not subscribe thru it, I saw your pop-up opt-in form only once and I like that. I know a lot of bloggers say they have success with that when used repeatedly but I guess it is more with people who think that for them to get access to the blog, they need to register rather than with people who know they can close it without subscribing. You only register after you have made sure that the blog has what you are looking for.

I am wondering if you can place an opt in form somewhere after the article. I personally will want to take action after I have read a post, not before, and I guess it is the same for a lot of people.

That’s all! I don’t have all the fancy tools that will check ur links and image tags but I am hoping you are practicing what you are preaching in those areas :)

    Pls don’t break anything!

  • Your Ultimate Anchor Text Tutorial - from Basic to Advanced
O yea Ana, that was intentional because your niche and mine are not related in any way.

I know it can bring me human traffic but still I use my keywords sparingly when I comment on blogs that are totally outside my niche.

But here you go, I will use KeywordLuv on this reply … just for you ;)

  • Your Ultimate Anchor Text Tutorial - from Basic to Advanced
    Hi Ana,

The importance of anchor text cannot be over emphasized. I use it to maximum and much more for onsite SEO (interlinking my pages) :) . How I wish that doing it offsite is oh-so-easy as this tutorial. ;(

Offsite is where anchor text will bring you SERPs juice. But who will allow you build such keyword-rich anchor texts on their website? Except of course your online friends as you mentioned in the post. And you can only do so many guest posts else your own site suffers. And for article submissions, you have a limit to its usage else it is labelled as too much self promotion.

Unless you are Adobe (who people unknowingly ranked for “click here” as Pete mentioned), we should be thankful if we get a naked link offsite. I guess that if “click here” is a competitive keyphrase, people will not use it as anchor text when linking to Adobe :)

This is surely the ultimate tutorial on anchor text. Thanks!

Golly, “experts” wrong again, what a shocker.

DennisEdell.com went from PR1 to PR3 in the one update. CONTENT is what it is all about…links help too. ;-)

Over the last year or so, Google has been quite vocal about the fact that comments links are losing value…soon probably none, they pay very little attention to it now.

FYI: Blog commenting has not been a good source for backlinks in quite a while, and shouldn’t be used for such.

Thanks for Ian’s link, that was my first question!

Thanks for the awesome comment-ping tip, I’ll start that now!

Finally, and a little off-topic (saving an email) - the new theme is up and running, sorry for the delay, I talk a bit bout it here - http://www.dennisedell.com/10733/new-year-new-theme-new-plans-oh-my/ - you can easing see why a review at this time would be useless or at least really short. LOL!

I like your hair and your picture so I don’t know what anyone is complaining about. If it was some cartoon or something that didn’t look like you that would be another matter. Now to the real commenting.

Perhaps it’s me but I’ve never relied wholly on organic search or Google for my traffic. My strategy includes a lot of targeted networking and commenting along with a healthy dose of SEO. Until I read about PageRank here I had forgotten about it

Also, and I’m going to talk about me here, for my blog I have CommentLuv et al installed and have it all dofollow. The only thing I make nofollow is some outbound links (affiliate stuff) and links to certain pages (about, contact). Other than that if link juice goes I guess it goes. My blog isn’t 100% of my marketing or income, only one stream. So with diversity in place I can focus on the overall strategy, community building, and providing massive value to all of my readers and subscribers.

Hey Robert,

I’m with you about not focusing solely on organic search. It’s important to use other effective sources of traffic generation.

Social media is red HOT right now and it offers free “word of mouth” advertising. We still need to get out there and network with others. This exactly how I’m getting a flood of traffic from Facebook! :)

I am so with you regarding your commenting remarks, Maky.

A lot of times I won’t comment on a blog simply because the blogger is not returning the comments. My thought is “why waste your breath?” Unless, you are link building of course. :)

Sorry to say I won’t be able to help you as far as your design questions go - I had a designer do it all for me. However, it looks to me like Ian Belanger who I mentioned in the post is more than capable to do it. I loved working with him.

You are right, my blog is crawled daily, so pinging the comments on my blogs is a bit of a waste of time. :)

I’d say not to worry about your Alexa rank. It’s like PR in most cases - everybody know it’s all frivolous, yet everybody pays attention to the numbers.

Just track your traffic through Google Analytics and make sure it grows.

At point #5 you want to say if the comment is showing “waiting for moderation” and still I ping that comment then it will instantly crawled by search engines(Google, Yahoo, Bing etc). Am I correct?

Technically, the comment is there, it’s just not visible to the reader - you.

Plus, when you ping something, it doesn’t mean that it will be crawled instantly, of course. So by the time, the SE spider gets to the comment, it might actually be approved by then.

Either way, I always do it. Doesn’t take but a second.

I guess the trick is to find your ideal balance. What works for someone else may not work for you, and vice-versa. But experiment with what feels right, and don’t be afraid to try a new approach that you haven’t come across before. If it works for you, then it works, period.
