Wow-another thing to add to the tech-toolbox. Although I’m undyingly grateful to those Google guys for drastically simplifying my life the past decade, they don’t need to know the toilet paper I use.
TY for the code, Ana and welcome back from your ski vacation:)

- Anyone Should Blog? 3 Types of Blogs and 3 Ways to Handle Them
Amen, Ana. I couldn’t agree more that blogging will have you camped next to the canines in the workhorse department. Luckily, I have a Siberian Husky, so he’s a good companion for those late nights and early mornings when the sane people of this world are asleep:).Loving the advice in #2 (Branding)-find your target audiences biggest frustration, and solve it for them. Drilling down to specifics is key, too. There’s a reason “make money blogging” has 10M hits…
And to add to the little blogger to blogger conversation, share the quality resources. I am generally turned off by sites with too many internal links…quoting experts, statistics, and studies is always impressive, and improves credibility, regardless of your niche.
TY for the tips to stay away from the wrong side of the glass;)
- How Two Days Without Internet Made Me Stumble Upon a Great Idea
Lol, Ana! It’s only a problem if it’s keeping you from completing other tasks more important. If so, you may want to cut back. If you normally answer 20 per post, cut it to 10, or a number that works for you. I know that most A-list bloggers don’t respond to many comments, but I doubt you’d lose a lot of traffic by tightening up that boundary.I can’t imagine answering the volume of comments that you get, here-ugh!
Hope that half-asses psychological assessment resonates…and please DON’T respond to this comment!
- How Two Days Without Internet Made Me Stumble Upon a Great Idea
Taking a break from responding to umpteen comments sounds like a fabulous idea, and a sure-fire way to balance home and work, Ana.Not that I’d likely ever respond to anyone’s comment, simply b/c I don’t have the tech-skills.
And thanks again to Ben and Josh from www.profitblog.com for helping me with my eBook image-you rock!
I love this site, and learn something valuable every week:)
- Blog Audit Friday: Lend a Helping Hand to Traffic Generation Cafe
Hi Ana-Now you know, I have next-to-no SEO, web design, and tech creds-I am the OGL (Original Gangsta Luddite).
Pls keep in mind, I’m looking at your blog from a psychological POV, or someone who is “always in the wrong class,” and not necessarily trying to fit in (I’m quite comfortable in my little therapist skin) but to understand this other world.
First impressions:
~Love the look, the header, the coolness, and the blue and red. Somehow, this color scheme could construe cold and aloof, but not here.
~The header pic: I always assumed it was you, altho u look somewhat different in various profile pics, and on video. But then yesterday, I saw someone on Twitter w/the same gravatar. Hmmmm..did they jack Ana? Maybe she’s gaming us? Regardless, it totally works, and ur beautiful, so who really cares if it’s you or not. So, is it you…?:).
~Engagability: I don’t know too many other A-listers who commit to answering comments, sincerely helping, offering the awesome Blog Audit Fridays and broadcasts. I think ur in a class by yourself, here. Hope it lasts, but if not, I’m not mad ‘atcha.
~Personality. I was really watching your first Sunday Coffee broadcast (or first for me anyway) from a therapist’s POV. B/c I didn’t know much of you then, I thought “let me just sit back and watch her in action. How do I feel in her presence. How does she engage? Is she sincere? Why is she doing this for free?”
I was looking for something ‘salesy’ but didn’t find it. Then ur beautiful daughter came in, and you were so calm as she interrupted (in a very age-appropriate manner;)), and you won me over b/c it takes a lot of grace and poise to conduct business and calmly explain to your child that “mommy is working.”
~Authenticity: which I have to say is a mainstay for the psychotherapy profession, and hugely pre-dates the blogosphere. Love the honesty, and the no b.s approach. You remind me of Naomi Dunford of ittybiz on that front, and I really value it.
~Cred-the numbers speak for themselves, and you can’t fake that funk, baby.In a nutshell, those are characteristics I look for when choosing to spend my limited emotional energy, and sorry that I couldn’t find any tech problems, but for me, that’s not as important as other stuff.
So there you go, my 1/2 ass-psychological audit of your blog.
Keep on rockin’ the traffic generation!

Ana,
I just had to come back and tell you how helpful this was. I have been testing the search terms I have been going for and this give me a true picture. I am winning on some and others I am not. Now I can work on those I am not.

Hello Ana, I just checked this out: 1=search regular without pws=0, 2=search regular with pws=0, 3 search incognito without pws=0. 1 gives the same results as 3, obviously based on my past browsing history. Only 2 appears to ignore my past browsing. What do you find? Am I missing something here?

That is SOOOOO cool!! I never knew about incognito, I spend half my time logging in and out of my Google account so they don’t skew my search results!! You just save me a heap of time!

While Chrome is probably the best browser to use for this because you can have one window showing personalized results and open a new incognito window that doesn’t show personalized results, the other major browsers do have “private browsing” options.
For checking the ranking positions of my sites, I use the Rank Checker Firefox plugin from seobook.com which will show you your rankings in Google, Yahoo, and Bing for a list of keywords. You can save your list and even export the results as a CSV file if you want to keep a record.
I do like Rank Checker; I only wish someone would come up with a tool that tells YOU what pages are ranking for what keywords, instead of us trying to see if we ranked for a particular keyword.
Makes sense?
Ana, do you use Google Webmaster Tools? They provide you with a report that shows the impressions your site gets for different search queries.
I find the data very helpful,as the report gives you info on the “impressions” that keywords from your site are getting in searches.
Here’s an example: You may see that a search for the keyword “traffic generation” resulted in an impression for your site at #100 in the search results. The report will also give you the clickthrough rate for the impressions.
Note: The data is not presented in real time, however it is extremely valuable to know what keywords are making impressions and where they are in the SERPS.
You will discover keywords and keyword phrases that you aren’t even targeting…but they are appearing in searches.
You can take this data and optimize the keywords and move them up into the traffic. Best of all it’s a free service! Give it a try.

I think you can obtain the same effect by using a high anonymity proxy or having two browsers.
(and of course do some other things too).
One that you use frequently and one that has cookies, internet history, cache etc disable so that google can’t collect or store any kind of data in it, thus with one browser you can surf the net while with the other you can check google results

Cool; I knew about the extra code but not the ‘incognito’ function in chrome (maybe I should use it more over firefox :p). Will give it a go.

I still prefer Firefox, but only out of habit. I think Chrome has great functionality.
Why would one need such stealthiness, aka Incognito?
Dennis Edell@ Direct SalesMark´s last blog ..The Scrolling Homepage- A Sticky Tactic You Haven’t Heard…
To see the correct results from search engines. You can try searching for a certain keyword while google personalizes your results and then use a proxy or use Ana’s technique and do the same query, you will see different results.
This is critical for anyone who wants to promote a website, because he needs to see what almost everybody sees and not the results tailored after the data google collected from him.

I like your new banners too. Very pleasant. They look more like “your recommendations” than a regular banner link.

Hey Ana,
It’s definitely important to turn off personalized search when you want to find out your true rankings. I appreciate the two tips you have shared with me because I knew nothing about them.
When I want to find out where I really am in the search engines I just go to tools and click on clear recent history. That usually does the trick, but sometimes I don’t want to clear all my history so I will try out both the methods you’ve listed here see how well I like them. Thanks for sharing your tips and advice on this topic.

SEO companies should eliminate web history because when they optimize a website for certain keywords, test searches and analyze competitors, then google may show results in favour of that website to them, while for others different results would appear.
Either way you look at it, there are downsides, Andreas.
At least these searches are a good start.
Being in Thailand I need to go even further with this. I use a Firefox plugin called Google Global that will show me results specific to the US and other countries. I notice it adds in the code you mention automagically, so I’m covered!

Sometimes these machines think they know too much about us. Off course Google is a machine and how the hell do they think they can track us…they track our behaviour and think they can determine what we’ll do or search…absurd isn’t it?
Well, let’s see how the search engine evolve and thanks Ana for giving me a way to GAME THE SEARCH ENGINE!
You are welcome, Tim. I confess sometimes their “tracking” can serve it’s purposes, but come on…
