How to Mad Lib Your Way to 40% Conversion Increase

by · 20 comments

***Read about this great Email Marketing Traffic Conversion Tip in my previous post.

Crazy ideas… Don’t you just love those?

When it comes down to online marketing, even the craziest landing page conversion idea is worth split testing - it might just turn out to be your best converting one.

Here is a great example of one such split testing idea for your landing page conversion…

I recently learned about a very unique opt-in form from some dude with an online music site.

It asked all the questions a typical opt-in form would: name, email, etc, but it did it in a narrative format, Mad Lib-style.

This landing page conversion form operates in exact same way any opt-in form would: you can click on each field or tab between them, it manages errors the same way a standard form would.

However, you have to agree: it looks nothing but standard.

Personally, I have not done any split testing on this form yet, but someone else I found did test their landing page conversion with it and the results are definitely head-turning.

The Mad Lib form increased their landing page conversions across the board by 25-40%.

25-40%!

This “crazy” idea goes to show that we should be split testing everything we do, because we never know until we put it to the test.

So, what’s the point?

Don’t settle for the same predictable or maybe even mediocre landing page conversion results you’ve been getting for the past 3 years.

Open your business to split testing, and the results just might amaze you.

Remember, the success of your business does not come from how much traffic you drive to your website, but from how well you convert that traffic into paying customers.

Where to learn more:

Here’s a resource that will give you an insider look at some very extensive split testing. Check out 43 split tests to see the test results that will reveal the best ways to increase your landing page conversions.

You are right: you don’t have to comment or retweet, but would it help if I told you it would be much appreciated? :)

Is the 43 Split Tests you refer to the joint efforts of Ryan Deiss and Perry Belchere because there wasn’t a link included? I recall going through that brief but insightful product and definitely some great takeaways there.

I used to use Google Website Optimizer for split tests as it is pretty easy. Now I use fliptracker.com which is a very simple tool set up by Trey Smith at just $9/month.

Important if you’re doing a lot of split testing to decide which pages are the biggest winners.

One of my mid term goals is to nail multivariate testing using Website Optimizer, WordPress and OptimizePress as I’m sure that could throw up some very interesting and insightful results.

I think Ryan Deiss is quite possibly the best split tester out there.

Yes, that’s the one, Wayne. It looks like it’s currently off the market, so Ihad to remove the link.

You are right though: Ryan is one of the best in this area - I love it when he shares what he cooked up in his testing lab.

I’ve been a bit delinquent with my split testing lately. Tested out Visual Website Optimizer - takes a degree just to set it up correctly. Thanks for mentioning Trey Smith’s tool; will check it out next time I get a split testing bug. :)

Hey Ana,

Great post. I definitely will be doing some split testing soon on my opt in box. Hey love the new look of the site. At first I thought it was totally new, but then realized it was a redirect to your site, with new look.

Great work.

Chris

As much as I hate the work involved in split testing, I love to see the results - all worth it at the end.

Thanks for stopping by, Chris!

Great tip Ana.
I must confess I get a bit lazy about coming with creative ideas for the things we do every day. I have a seen a few different capture form techniques, and now you have given me the kick in the pants to come up with something of my own ;)

Or - don’t reinvent the wheel and use somebody else’s idea:). I am all for working smarter.

Hey, Slavik - I am working on overall overhaul :) of the blog; optin form will definitely be one of those changes, although I am not sure yet if I go Mad Lib way.

Hi Ana,

Hmmm, that's very interesting. Have never seen anything like this. I wonder if you could use that on Aweber as well?

To your success,

Yes, Ilka, you can do it with AWeber; however the form has to be designed separately and then connected to AWeber.

I would have never thought of the Mad Libs form but it does put a whole new spin on things. I have not done any split testing as I have not looked into learning how to to it yet. Remember the old saying "How do you eat an Elephant" "One bite at a time". Thank you for the idea and information! Great post as always

I live by Elephant philosophy - that's the only way to survive! One more thing I heard lately and loved "Do first things first, and second things never."

You'll get to it some day, Robert, and so will I :) .

Wonderful post Ana. Split testing is a concept that many marketers overlook in their business despite the obvious benefits. A great reminder to all. :)

Thanks, Karen. Tracking and split-testing (or lack thereof, I should say) are responsible for leaving a lot of money at the table.
