Friday’s Tips for Keeps: How to Increase Search Engine Rankings with CommentLuv on YOUR Blog

increase rankings via commentluv links

Tricky? Not so much...

Last Friday we talked about how to do better link building on CommentLuv blogs.

This Friday, I decided to spill the beans on yet another little trick I use CommentLuv plugin for - this time on my own blog.

It might seem obvious once you read it, but I don’t see too many of you doing it on your own blogs, plus I had a couple of questions on how I do what I do.

Of course, this post is only for those bloggers who are currently using (or will start using right after reading this post - great for user-engagement) CommentLuv plugin on their blogs.

We all know how important it is to link our posts and pages to each other within our blog. In SEO it’s called deep linking or internal linking.

If you need a refresher on the topic, refer to this post:

As of right now, I use four different ways to interlink my posts:

  1. Simply by placing links to other relevant posts from the post I am writing (like I just did above).
  2. By using Yet Another Related Posts Plugin - it shows relevant posts at the end of any post automatically.
  3. By displaying Popular Posts and Recommended Posts in my sidebar.
  4. By using CommentLuv plugin in my comment section.

Of course, I use CommentLuv on my blog (as you can very well see) and my readers are more than happy to provide me with a link to one of their latest posts.

But have you noticed that almost all my responses to your comments contain my CommentLuv links as well?

And it’s so easy to do!

Of course, you need to be logged in to your dashboard first.

But who said you need to respond to your comments from your dashboard?

You can certainly do it straight from the post itself and THAT’S when you can use CommentLuv links, giving your readers yet another way to find your older posts and an inner link for your own SEO purposes.

Marketing Takeaway

Simple enough.

Now I wonder how many of you have been using this simple tip on your own blog.

Love it or hate it? Comment to show me that you’re alive!

Great tips as always. I am going to consider commentluv (I have written it off until reading this post). Quick question, does commentluv effect spam comments at all? Do you see more or less? Let me know if you have a chance, thanks!

Regarding spam: it’s hard for me to tell, Matt, since I’ve used CL from the very beginning of my blog.

But look at it this way: I have a huge blog, yet I am still using CL, so spam problem is not that bad. LOL

This is brilliant. I’m very new to the game of building back links and increasing rank in the search engines. I’ve been trying to find blogs that use CommentLuv as a way to build traffic and backlinks to my site but it never occurred to me that using the plugin on my site could actually be beneficial to me! Great info

By the way, did you see this post of mine: CommentLuv enabled?

Reply

David Bennett September 28, 2011 at 3:52 pm

Let’s see: I link within my articles. I have YARPP installed. I have recent posts (but not popular posts) in my sidebar, - so I am doing well.

But I never thought of commenting from the front end. And with CommentLuv Premium that I just got, I am hoping that I can choose the post that I want to show rather than the latest post.

By the way, I came to your blog from http://www.craigsowerby.com - whose site I came to after looking at Andy Bailey’s video. I asked Craig if there was a central place that listed those who have CommentLuv installed and he said you have a list of PR2 and above blogs and I am just wondering where that is, if you have it.

And then I see that you have huge traffic, so I have to keep reading here. I genuinely feel I have found something at last that I can read and benefit from.

I used to do this when I first started blogging, Ana. I still do it on one of my blogs occasionally, but it links back to posts on another one on my blogs. Sometimes, I sacrifice SEO for aesthetics. You have quite a few comments on your posts so sprinkling the links in is less obtrusive, but I find it too distracting doing it on sites with few comments. Great SEO/traffic tip though. :)

Reply

Ana | Traffic Generation May 17, 2011 at 11:04 am

Ana. great post. Let me ask you a question

I have this plugin in Firefox that highlights donotfollow links in red. As I understand commentluv allows you to get juice links back and references the last post. So when somebody installs commentluv the attribute is still rel=”nofollow”. So how can you get good one way back links is the attribute is still nofollow? How does Google look at it in terms of backlinks?

Ana | Traffic Generation May 15, 2011 at 6:08 pm

The blogger always has a choice of making CommentLuv a DoFollow vs NoFollow plugin.

It’s still good to have nofollow links - Google considers it “natural”. However, you are absolutely right - the link building from nofollow links is not as effective as dofollow.

Is your recommended posts a plugin? I couldn’t find one called that exactly but a few similar ones.

Try log in using the details you used to sign up for the second account and then do a password request. It should then let you log in and if it does, it will say that you have not confirmed the account and give the option to resend the confirmation email.

Unfortunately that won’t work since they don’t give you a password until you confirm it so there’s no way to log in.

But in my continuing saga of my problems with CommentLuv, I did find where you can add an additional URL. It wasn’t in the obvious place where it actually says “Add your website.” It was under the “members” button. It had a drop down that said “Add an additional URL”. I had to pay $10 to buy credits to add it but I did.

Unfortunately now it gives me a choice of 5 comments to chose from on my blog instead of my posts. LOL.

I’m wondering if it’s a feedburner issue.

Anyway, I left another message asking what I should do but it doesn’t look like they handle those too often. There were tickets in there that people had left in early April that no one had taken care of.

I used to have the same feedburner issue you are before andy changed the new version. I use the feedburner URL and my last 10 comes out with no problem on every blog that has comluv enabled.

Try registering with the Feedburner URL and “unban” your site afterward..good luck.

I also use commentluv on my blog. I also mostly comment on commentluv blogs. I think a lot of the blogs using commenuv really high quality blogs, and it is grey to get a deeplink from qualety blogs..

Ana,
I must be a good “listener” because I’ve been following you for a long time now and the only one of these that I’ve missed is displaying Popular Posts and Recommended Posts in my sidebar. I’ll be adding that soon.

As always, thanks for all the valuable posts. I’m always learning from you.

Ana,

I definitely use Comment Luv on my blog and am getting better at responding to every post so that I can maximize its use. Luv this great little plugin. I see that you are a pro at adding links to other relevant posts within your current post…lesson that I will implement on my very next post! Thanks as always.

Ana,

I thought about using Comment Luv on my own blog when I reply to readers. I never do because I always thought, “well, this IS my last post.” DUH! It won’t be next time I post!! And I did find it a little excessive.

But since I actually contemplated it and now you have verified that it can be perfectly normal to do it. I will.

Thanks Ana and have a great weekend.

Nifty little trick and for some reason, I have been using all four methods with the exception of precisely the last one. Problem (which really should not be) is that most of the time I reply to comments via my dashboard and not directly from the post. Should start doing that to see what kind of effect it will bring ;-)

Great tip, as always. I installed commentluv after hesitating for a bit, because I was worried about link leaks. Then when I became a loyal reader of TGC and noticed that you didn’t bother about PR but were giving away so much link love, I installed it rightaway. I am doing all the 4 points as mentioned by you. Especially the deeplinking thing when replying to comments on my blog - I learned that from one of your posts. :)

Cheers,
Jane.

Ana, great tip! One day I woke up and realized that I should be doing the exact same thing! I’m not sure why I wasn’t doing it when I first installed CommentLuv. I guess I was thinking that people are already on my blog and they don’t need any more reminders to link to my posts. Then it dawned on me that by using my own CommentLuv, I would be building more backlinks - especially when I’m responding to new comments that were left on older posts. Most likely these comments are left by people coming from search engines and they might not think to visit other relevant pages on my blog.

Using the ReplyMe plugin helps with this too, because this way it increases my chances of converting search engine traffic into regular readers. :)

I suppose we all treat our dashboard as the place to control our blogs from - that’s how I felt in the beginning until I realized that this way it was much easier, plus I saw that I could add the links. :)

Two great minds think alike, Ileane!
