How To Get Sponsors to Offer Product Giveaways on Your Blog

by Daniela Baker · 25 comments

Ask and you shall receive...

One of the best ways to drive more traffic to your blog, whether you’re blogging about sewing, gardening, or your web design business, is to get sponsors to offer product giveaways.

Many blogs run random giveaways or even contests where they offer their readers great prizes: just check out Ana’s Thesis theme and CommentLuv Premium giveaways for examples.

Of course, most bloggers can’t afford to provide all these prizes on their own, so they find sponsors – other businesses that are willing to give away products through their blog.

If you’re curious as to how you can get sponsors for a giveaway on your blog, here is how you can go about it.

Direct Email

If you have specific sponsors in mind already – those who aren’t your competitors, but who are in a similar niche as you are or who target the demographic that your blog sees most – email them directly.

Be polite and up front about what you want when asking for a product giveaway, and make sure that you state some facts about your blog that make the giveaway idea more enticing.

For instance, many businesses will give products away through blogs that get tons of traffic, since this ends up being a cheap form of advertising for the business itself!

Use Your Blog

You can also ask for sponsorships through your blog.

This works best if you know some of your readers are business owners who are close to your blogging niche.

Just put out a couple of posts about what you want for your giveaway and give readers information about how to contact you for more information.

Then sit back and see what happens.

Use Your Social Networks

If you’re a pro blogger, you’re probably connected with other bloggers and businesses through other social networks, so you can leverage these to make sure you have all your bases covered.

Again, just talk about why you’re doing a giveaway, what kind of traffic your blog gets, and what types of products you’re looking for.

Give people a way to get in touch with you about giveaways and see what happens.

Five Tips for Getting Sponsors

Whether you get sponsors through email, blog posts, or your social networks, you can use these five tips to make sure you get as many sponsors as possible:

  • Highlight your traffic

One of the main reasons that businesses participate in blog giveaways is for the exposure it gives them.

If you can prove that your blog sees a ton of traffic every day or every month, a business is more likely to do a giveaway through you.

They might, in fact, see more traffic by giving away a few affordable items on your blog than they would by spending the same amount of money on an online advertising campaign, so you should definitely play up your blog traffic numbers.

  • Complement potential sponsors

It’s always a good idea to let potential sponsors know that you already know what they’re about, especially if you’re soliciting for product giveaways directly.

A complement thrown in an email or a Facebook conversation can go a long way towards getting you good sponsors, since your potential sponsors will probably be curious about why you chose them to work with.

  • Give them something in return

Of course, you should always give businesses who are sponsoring giveaways on your blog something in return.

It could be something small-ish, like links back and credit for the giveaway.

If you are doing a giveaway with just one or two sponsors, you might even do an entire post on each sponsor, talking about their products and why you love them.

If you’ve established rapport with your readers, this type of post can go a long way towards advertising for a business, and it will make many businesses get on board with sponsoring your giveaways.

  • Get your readers really excited

Be sure to play up your giveaways and get your readers really excited.

If you’ve already done a giveaway in the past, let potential future sponsors know how well it went.

For instance, how many readers entered the giveaway by leaving a comment on one of your posts?

The more readers that participate in each giveaway, the better leverage you have to host even bigger and better giveaways in the future!

  • Hold regular giveaways

By holding giveaways on a regular basis, you can give potential sponsors some flexibility as to what they’ll donate and when.

For instance, a sponsor might prefer to donate something around the holiday season instead of during the summer, and if you host giveaways throughout the year, they’ll have the option to do this.

Marketing Takeaway

As a pro blogger, you’ll get better and better at finding and getting sponsors for your blog giveaways.

Chances are likely that you’ll even end up with a few larger businesses who, if they see good returns from doing giveaways through your fantastic blog, will give items away through you multiple times, which is great for business in the long run.

Note from Ana

I loved this topic. I’m new to blogging and I don’t have a lot of readers nor traffic. How can I find a sponor that’s willing to work with a new blog site? Any tips or suggestions.
Thanks

Starting out can be tough. There aren’t very many sponsors willing to participate and giveaways if you don’t have anything to offer them in return. For them it’s all about the advertisement.
Try contacting as many sponsors as you can. Don’t forget the local sponsors either.
Running a monetized blog is kinda like running your own business, sometimes you just need to make an investment, meaning sometimes you’ll just have to purchase the prize yourself.

Hey, Daniela,

I agree with what some of the other commenters have mentioned, in that you would need to have a fair amount of visitors to begin with, before offering freebies.

And as also been covered in the responses, the relevance of the giveaway to the Blog’s niche(topic) would be better off. Though, now I think about it a little more, you could probably throw in some ” left of center” non related offers, as this could cover interests shared between the visitors, though, non Blog topic related. This could strengthen relationships even more-so.

Love the ideas :) Its important to connect with your readers, by having a good connection you can push your products out even further, and before the launch its all about getting everyone excited. Sharing updates and progress of the product, and even a soft launch as a tester.

You know, I’m a also an Amazon merchant and I’ve often wondered how I could get my products in the hands of the right blogger to do a giveaway. This is a good post and I think I can reverse engineer it but I’m wondering if perhaps you or any of the commentors might know of a website that links up potential sponsors with bloggers? Or at least, someone should START ONE if there isn’t already :) Not me though… lol

I’m not aware of any sites that link sponsors with bloggers. You might be on to something though.

I found one - bloggerdise.com, but it’s a pretty new site so is hard to navigate.

As someone who is interested in providing product for a giveaway, I have to say yes, you need traffic. If I’m going to donate a set of my to-go cups with a toddy maker, for instance, it has a real out-of-pocket cost for me. So, naturally, I want to find a blog that has decent traffic to start.

Having said that, I can imagine where it would really help propel your traffic to a new level. I’ve found a lot of the blogs with high levels of readership can charge a fee to do giveaways, which makes sense.

Nice topic, I appreciate the ideas. Of course, we need to already have significant traffic to pull it off but that’s the same with any sponsor worth having. Giveaways are great, as long as it’s not the sole form of traffic. Otherwise our bounce rates would go through the roof.

Great tips, I know it’s really hard to get sponsors specially if you have new blog and less traffic so you need to create first some reputation for your blog only then you can get some good sponsors which suits your blog and readers need.

Good stuff. The only thing I wonder about is whether this type of traffic is sticky at all or do they just leave after the ‘free stuff’ is over.

I think the best way to ensure that traffic generated via a giveaway is “sticky”… is to ensure that the products/services you giveaway are closely aligned with your blog’s topic and targeted to your reader’s needs.

It may seem like a simple tip, but I see oddball choices of giveaways all too often - if a giveaway would make someone think - why is “she” giving away “that” - then it is likely not a good fit.

In addition to rewarding your existing readers, another reason to do a giveaway, especially if you incorporate social share buttons to make it easy for your existing readers to promote, is that a percentage of your readers social connections probably like the same type of things.

So give your giveaway promo post some meat - not just “we’re giving this cool thing away,” but give them some “how to” info - best tips/tricks on using the item; tell them something they don’t already know about it. Also make it interactive - ask for their best tips on using it too, or ask how they would use the item you are giving away to make their business better etc.

Like somebody else already mentioned, you should make sure the products are aligned with your blog’s topic. Sure, you’re always gonna have people who just stop by to ‘get the prize’, but if people can related to your content they might decide to stick around.

Giveaways is good in point of webmasters as well as vendors. Because webmaster can get a lot of traffic to that post by simply offering a small giveaways in his blog, but to participate in that giveaway rules must be simple or else most of them won’t participate at all. In terms of vendor it is a best way to promote his product with free of cost (instead of paid review).

Great advice - you always have to show them how THEY would benefit from the contest. Much easier to get things if they feel like they are getting a good value in return!

Hello Daniella,

I like giveaways, and I’ve used them in the past. There is a company called CSN stores, or Wayfair, that does do giveaways of their product in return for you simply mentioning them in your post. Not bad, I think.

One of the ideas that struck me while reading this was to reach out to a few of the AdSense advertisers who regularly appear on my site. They are in a related field that is valuable to my readers, but they do not directly compete.

Hi Daniela,

I tend to post giveaways often and several times it’s useful to join giveaway-sites when you receive notifications of them.

Of course this can help a lot to expose your blog, but there is a drawback I noticed: if people find your site looking for only freebies, most of them, never return as readers or subscribers. It’s clear checking their twitter accounts for example and you see only links to giveaways that just joined….

Cheers,

Great tips. Giveaways work really well specially if you can get products that are “hot” at the moment. Ana’s CommentLuv giveaway is a perfect good example for that. In my opinion, it is probably one of those “simple” things that could be a a win/win situation for everyone.. in this case, the sponsor, the users and of course the website owner who is providing the “gateway” for the giveaway. Love it!
