Zuckerberg, Step Aside - Zurker is Here

by Ana Hoffman | Join Ana on Google+ Here

zurker social networkMy husband hates Facebook.

He never created an account there, never even saw how it worked.

But he hates it and everything about it.

You see we are currently shopping for our next house in the San Francisco Bay area.

Those of you who live there know that a decent house in a decent area can get expensive very quickly, even in the seeming real estate downturn.

Getting back to Facebook: their base of operations is located in Palo Alto, CA, just south of San Francisco.

The recent announcement of their upcoming IPO (initial public offering, i.e. Facebook will become a publicly traded company) is rumored to create hundreds of instant millionaires.

Those instant millionaires will need bigger, better, more expensive homes, which will lead to real estate price increase, which will mean that our already tight budget will suffer even more.

Yes, my husband really doesn’t like Facebook right now.

However, that strong dislike quickly went from the concern for the rising real estate prices to “How unfair it is for those pimple-faced college kinds to become instant millionaires while the rest of us are stuck in the grind of paying off our college loans for most of our lives while still struggling to provide for our families!”

It really reminded me of one of my favorite scenes from the movie “Serendipity”:

In Comes Zurker

No, this is not a Facebook bashing post.

Facebook is great for many reasons, both business and personal.

Facebook is the reason my long-lost family in Russia was able to find me online and get in touch with me.

However, if you use Facebook for business, you need to tread with caution.

Their playground, their rules.

The same goes for any other social media network out there.

Except for one.

Zurker.

The second I stepped foot on Zurker territory, I was fascinated, entertained, and intrigued.

What’s so Special about Zurker?

If I had to sum up Zurker in one word, it would be DEMOCRACY.

Zurker is a member-owned social platform.

This means that Zurker is not driven by a bunch of pimple-faced college kids that stand to make enormous amounts of money off collecting our private information and then selling it off to advertisers.

The idea behind Zurker is simple and intriguing: let’s give the keys to the network to the members and let them decide what’s best for them.

“At Zurker, we believe that if our members own the project, they will enthusiastically contribute ideas and feedback, allowing the Zurker development team to develop the social application most in tune with what people actually want.” from About page

To become a co-owner and an investor, all you need to do is to invite your friends to join Zurker.

For each person referred by you, you earn a vShare.

vShares are a stake in Zurker.

One vShare is equivalent to ownership of 1/1,000,000 of Zurker.

Now we are not talking about real shares of stock, since Zurker is not a publicly traded company - yet.

When 1,000,000 vShares have been allocated, Zurker will be restructured as a public corporation and vShares will become real shares.

Why would Zurker founders do that?

In their own words:

“Facebook and Google+ may have highly talented engineers, but no elite engineering team can beat the innovative power of 500,000 passionate members who each have a stake in the success of the project as a whole.

Recent history has taught us one thing - democracy always triumphs.”

Bottom line: you get to own a part of a social network just by doing what you are already doing, i.e. growing your social reach, networking with other members, and branding yourself and your business.

I find this concept pretty interesting and attractive… Don’t you?

Other Essentials I Loved about Zurker

As I was going through the steps of signing up for Zurker, I got a strong feeling that this network is about QUALITY.

Just take a look at one of the screenshots of the sign-up process:

I like that.

Zurker’s version of the “Wall” is called “Street”.

zurker street hangout

You can post links, photos, videos, have private conversations with specific users, create business pages - you name it, Zurker offers it.

But don’t take my word for it - go see it for yourself.

Why? Why? Why?

Aren’t we talking about just another time-consuming social media network here, Ana?

Don’t we have enough of them already?

Yes, and yes.

Here’s why I think you should check out Zurker though: it gives us a chance to dream of being a part of something way bigger than we could ever create ourselves…

Sure, Zurker can go belly up a year or two from now.

But what if it doesn’t?

Facebook started in a college dorm.

Would you have jumped on the chance to co-own it back then knowing that it would become an online giant?

With Zurker, you have that chance.

I love it how the founders of Zurker addressed the “Is Zurker a scam?” question:

“Just about every new startup is potentially a scam.

A bunch of entrepreneurs with varying degrees of technical ability somehow secure funding from Venture Capital firms.

Many startups burn through the funding, spending money on things like fast cars, without ever turning a profit.

The Venture Capital firms are OK with that because the few that do succeed, bring phenomenal return on investment.

At Zurker we practice Open-Book Accounting so at least you know we’re not buying Maybachs. “

Zurker gives us a chance to have a piece of pie and eat it too.

That’s why I look forward to exploring it more.

How about you?

Go check it out now.

From the looks of things, you wont receieve credit for me signing up through your link because I am in Canada. Zurker is available for the USA, United Kingdom, India, Philippines, New Zealand, Canada and Australia BUT Each Zurker accepts only members of that country:( Might want to note that when posting your referral link that you will only recieve shares from people who sign up where you are located. I had to create a Zurker Canadian account from a referral link on twitter to get in and the referral to count.

Ana Hoffman

That’s alright by me, Tasha. lol

I wonder why they set it up this way, but I am sure there’s some good logic behind separating different countries this way.

The biggest threat to Facebook is something exactly like what Zurker is trying to do. Something will come along that interests people more than FB, and the heard will move on.

Personally I am not a fan of Facebook or Zukerberg like your husband. Maybe I am a little too old for the Facebook thing I don’t know. Instant millionaires over make believe stock or digital stock I never could grasp. Sad that the world see’s companies like Google, Facebook, Twitter, and the like as something to invest in. I guess I am just old schooled. Zucker watch a ma calit is banking now, but I really don’t know how he can keep it up. I mean it is one of the simplest ideas in the world. There really isn’t much to it. He is just banking on popularity right now. Hopefully he doesn’t loose it. Twitter and Google Plus are no better in my opinion though.

Literally…huh. I don’t know how to react. I may have to revisit this new SM this weekend when I have less on my mind.

My issue is time. But I can make that up someone if Zurker is awesome.

My other issue is privacy. Will they keep my info private? Where is Zurker’s headquarters? Is it is a country that has laws to keep my stuff private?

I’ll be back…

Unfortunately, it seems like all other countries are looking up to the U.S. to be the first one to implement privacy laws that might actually work, Allie.

And that’s not happening anytime soon…

My way of going about it: never adding anything that I might regret in the future, whatever the social network.

As far as your time constraints… Come on, Allie! Who needs sleep! lol

Hey Ana,

That’s really cool that Zurker allows users to have a stake in the site. This certainly is a different take on this subject, but I can see how it could grow…especially since it has a built in affiliate program of sorts.

Who ever thought of that was definitely thinking out of the box.

I am not a social media guy…not at all…me and your husband definitely think alike on this one. Currently, I am not using any social media platform…not a single one. I actually have a day job and just don’t have time for it.

But I will say, the potential Zurker offers in terms of user stake is definitely worth checking out. Thanks for pointing this out.

BTW. I hope you guys find a great house you are happy with. Moving is always stressful…I know.

Mark :)

Too bad I get close to 30% of my traffic from social media… if not, I’d never step my foot there!

Maybe some day.

That’s exactly what I liked about Zurker, Mark - thinking outside the box and really giving people an incentive to grow the network.

Maybe one day I’ll have a dozen shares of it that will be actually worth something, lol.

Count me in on the group that will be happy once the shine of social media wears off and people start realizing how risky it is to have all of there personal information in the hands of a faceless corporation. The beauty of the internet has been its decentralized nature. No one company owns email, in fact if you use your own domain for email its portable and you can take it to whatever service provider you want, ditto for webhosting etc.

Facebook, Google etc, seek to take control of the internet, and own all of it for themselves. Far from a don’t be evil policy. Facebook has successfully centralized communications for a great many people. I know lots of people who have given up email in favour of facebook messaging, how scary is that?

But I’m not worried yet. I think Facebook will eventually mySpace itself out. People are already leaving it, it’s only a matter of time. Of course that won’t happen until Zucherberg and company make a few more billion of the IPO and a few million suckers who buy the stock at it’s peak lose a pile of money when the stock price inevitiably plummts.

Reply

Ana Hoffman

If people freely share information through those social media networks, then why are they complaining the whole world knows about it?

Don’t share anything you need to keep private…

We’ll see what happens with Google’s new unified privacy.

I am with you on all points, Jonathan.

Reply

Jonathan

I think that most people didn’t realize what they were getting into when they signed up for Facebook. I signed up so long ago I can’t remember when, and back then I had no idea what it was to become, or that down the road Faecbook would make it all but *impossible* to remove things already posted.

I think it’s downright criminal that if I want to remove things from my “timeline” I have to spend HOURS going through and deleting them on by one. It would be different if I was told that’s how it would be from the get go, but I wasn’t. Facebook pulled a bait and switch.

I absolutely think that we need new privacy laws to bring some accountability to these companies. Technology has changed so fast, and the law has not kept up.

That said, I won’t abandon Facebook as it is a useful tool. I just think we need some checks and balances in place. It astounds me that Microsoft was nearly broken in two over the bundling a web browser with an operating system (horrors!) but Google own the entire internet and no one seems to care.

Reply

Jonathan

“don’t share anything you need to keep private”

I shoud clarify my stance on this from my previous comment. I shared things long ago without an inkling of what kind of monster Facebook would become, that I would dearly love to remove from my profile now, but I can’t, because I don’t have hours to spend scrubbing my wall post by post.

Nevermind that even if you don’ even have a Faecbook account, you have no control over other people posting photos of you and tagging away.

Reply

Ana Hoffman

I certainly do see your point, Jonathan.

I was lucky (or smart?) enough not to start using FB until I needed to do it for my business, so I don’t really have anything hanging over me right now.

We certainly do need to continue putting pressure on them to actually pay attention to the “small folks” who made FB what it is today.

Reply

Adam R

Oh great…another social platform.

Personally I’m more on board with the statement of social media falling through the floor.

Honestly, the only thing I use it for is to drive traffic and occasionally check in with my family.

To me social networking is more of a tool instead of a personal communication device.

I wonder how this one will fair in the wake of facebook and twitter.

Reply

Ana Hoffman

If I had a choice, I’d forget social media ever existed, Adam. lol

But then of course, I’d loose about 30% of my traffic…

Hi Anna (and everyone else, too!)

Took a look at it - that would be me you got your first vshare from

Zurker is rough around the edges (and in the middle too!) but anything with the potential to loosen off Facebook’s stranglehold has my vote.

Reply

Ana Hoffman

Another thing I like about Zurker, Fiona, is the fact that once they have enough members, the members will be able to make and vote on how the site looks/operates, etc.

We could only wish FB would be that considerate…

Reply

Remember how IBM used to dominate the PC market? FB is in that position now, with similar arrogance. Being in at the beginning of something that might be the answer to that is great - thanks for the invite!

There are so many great social platforms out there that don’t get found, its hard to know which ones to spend your time on. Often, the biggest sites are the ones with the best marketing, not necessarily the ones with the best systems.

Yes, James, we all have only that much time in a day to spend on social media, so it certainly pays to make the best of it.

Of course, usually that means sticking with the biggies…

However, I am always willing to look at the start-ups like this one to see if I can use it for my business.

Reply

Ashley {The North Carolina Cowgirl}

I haven’t heard of this before but I’d be willing to check it out. It seems like there is a new social media platform every week. But it seems like they all are about the same and before long everyone will be spread out among them and there won’t be one giant. At least that’s my thoughts, but I could be wrong considering G+ hasn’t taken off like it was expected too. However, my favorite one right now is Pinterest. I spend more time on it then I ever have on any of the other sites.

Hi Ana,

Zurker sounds awesome. This is the first time I’ve heard of it, so I’ll definitively have to take a closer look. What I don’t like about Facebook is that they keep changing things all the time, and it seems that as soon as I get used to something, they remove it and add something new instead. And that keeps driving me crazy :)

Nice, but too little too late… Ana, I think the changes being made to Facebook (esp the “timeline”) will ultimately render it to be diluted, as myspace is now.

A lot of people in foreign countries (esp Southeast Asia) use facebook as a gathering spot, first for family, second for friends. Once they get disillusioned, facebook is on its way to becoming toast. I think a substitute will appear out of Malaysia or Singapore or the Phillipines, because no one will trust a corporate platform again. ***FACEBOOK missed the rule “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it” BIG TIME!

Zurker? V-share? Nah nah nah - not another waste of time where you have to walk over the baby chick in front of you to get some corn. I think most people have seen enough of that “jump thru hoops” popularity contest B.S. (Especially me! LOL!)
