Common SEO Mistakes

In his most recent video, Matt Cutts reveals 5 most common (not the most devastating) mistakes webmasters make.

1. Not having a website or having a website that is not crawlable is the biggest mistake he sees.

(not having a website is the common SEO mistake? :)

Making the site not crawlable does indeed happen quite a bit, as I mentioned in my search engine ranking optimization post.

2. Not including the right words on the page.

The example Matt gave is: don’t just write, “Mt. Everest Height” but write, “How high is Mt. Everest?” because that is how people search.

3. Don’t think about link building, think about compelling content and marketing.

4. Don’t forget to think about the title and description of your most important pages.

5. Not using webmaster resources and learning about how Google works and what SEO is about.

So, those are Matt’s top five SEO mistakes. Here’s his video:

Social Media

#Hashtags Be Gone

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) — the organization that makes the rules governing college sports — has banned the display of hashtags and social media URLs on football fields.

Apparently, any reference to social media presence is considered to be advertising.

Facebook settles Timelines trademark suit

Facebook and Timelines Inc. have reached a settlement in the trademark case against the social network, according to a document Facebook filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Timelines Inc. operates Timelines.com, a website for people to create and collaborate on historical timelines. The company sued Facebook in September 2011 after it debuted an overhauled profile page it called “timeline.” Timelines Inc. has registered trademarks for “Timelines,” “Timelines.com” and its “Timelines” logo.

Google bids Meebo goodbye, to focus on Google+

Google bought the popular social sharing bar Meebo less than a year ago. But after June 6, 2013 Meebo will be no more.

Google plans to focus more on Google+, including the recently launched Google+ Sign-In and Google+ plugins instead.

It’s more writing on the wall: Google+ is important and your business needs a presence on it.

New LinkedIn Contacts update

You may be thinking you already have Contacts in your LinkedIn account, but this update is something different.

The new LinkedIn Contacts will let you keep track of your LinkedIn connections and your connections from your address book, calendars and emails — all in one place. There’s a standalone app, too.

Twitter introduces a Mac app

Twitter is rolling out enhancements for Mac users that should make the social network more engaging. Mac App will allow a user to manage multiple accounts, view multiple timelines and use some new keyboard shortcuts.

Upgrade Your Social Media Marketing [SlideShare]

Dan Zarella from HubSpot put together this interesting Slideshare presentation to reflect his findings on social media responses.

Can’t say I agree on all points, but interesting findings just the same.

What’s your take on it?

Indian Payday Loan Hack

Has your blog been hacked by an indian payday loan company?

This warning comes from Andy Bailey, creator of CommentLuv.

“I’ve received a number of support tickets recently from users who get the ‘XML document invalid’ warning when they try to comment on CommentLuv sites and always it’s because their site has been hacked to have some invisible links to an Indian payday loan company.”

How to tell if your site has been hacked?

You need to view the source of your page while you are logged out and search for indipaydayloans.

The Ghost of WordPress

WordPress is no longer “just a blogging platform”.

wordpress ghost

ghost2

(source)

Ghost is a blogging platform that could become a genuine option for those of us who use WordPress to blog.

It was first announced by WordPress developer extraordinaire, John O’Nolan, back in November 2012. At the time it attracted an enormous amount of interest, but was nothing more than a concept.

But O’Nolan clearly recognized the potential he had in his hands and set about producing a prototype.

Now Ghost is backed by a Kickstarter campaign that has already surpassed its funding target (with 28 days left to go).

You know what that means? Ghost is going to become a reality.

Marketing This and That

Privacy

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has released its third annual “Who’s Got Your Back” privacy scorecard for Internet companies.

Digg’s RSS Reader

Digg has announced that it’s planning to release a beta version of its RSS reader in June.

It’s planning to charge for the final product, though exact pricing isn’t decided at this point.

The Online Retailer with Highest Sales Growth

No, it’s not Amazon.

That honor goes to Urban Outfitters.

According to the Internet Retailer 2013 Top 500 Guide, Urban Outfitters has experienced a 65.2 percent compound annual growth rate in the last decade — putting it atop the rankings of online sales growth.

Bitcoins - Stay Away

Bitcoin is a decentralized (i.e., no single country or organization controls it) digital currency. It was introduced in 2009 by an anonymous hacker, and its use gained a lot of momentum over the last couple of years.

But the exchanges pose potential risk to users, a study finds.

A recent paper by researchers at Southern Methodist and Carnegie Mellon universities (PDF) says that 45 percent of the exchanges fail. The paper also says most close their doors without refunding users’ money.

More on the story.

Google telling folks to not think about link building is pretty hilarious, but obviously in line with their beautiful view of how the web should work. I think that’s misleading advice though.

Hi Ana:

How are you?

Google and Matt
Are extremely confusing
They say that content matters
And at the same time
They do nothing
To help new websites
That have unique content on them.

So, people who create
new blogs and websites
Have to struggle
And not only that
But they have to figure out ways
Of backlinking.

Now if only content was important
Why does Google not care for it
Why make people
Get backlinks?

Maybe Matt can answer that!!!

Take care.

Best wishes and regards.

Veena :)

Ana, I just wanted to let you know how appreciative I am of these marketing skinnies you put together. These obviously take you a lot of time, searching and effort, so I want you to know that they mean a lot to me, and I’m sure, to others as well.

Ana, I got that email from Andy too and it really makes me wonder what is going on with all the WordPress hacking. Maybe we should switch to other website/blog platforms? Love to know your thoughts on that one.
I love Matt’s video’s always gives us hints on what Google thinks.
Interesting about Digg, I haven’t used that platform in almost a year with their changes. Thanks for your informative update :) Have a great week ahead too Ana.

Reply

Ana Hoffman May 5, 2013 at 11:09 am

The hackers are always on the prowl, Lisa, whatever platforms we use. WP just seems to be a better target since it’s the most popular and most widely used one. Switching to something different seems to be too extreme though.

Digg has been bought out about a year ago and they’ve been working on changing the whole site around.

I received an email notification from Andy Bailey a few days ago about the payday loan hack thing. I can’t help but wonder if it is related to the recent WordPress exploits I have been reading about the past few weeks. WordPress themselves talked about securing your admin login and some exploit.

It was also recently pointed out to me that there is a Super Cache and W3 Total Cache exploit going around. From what I understand upgrading will fix the problem, but there were some that recommended disabling them completely. I haven’t followed up on since.

Ana Hoffman May 5, 2013 at 11:02 am

First of all, it’s a pleasure to put a face to a name, Ray - love your new gravatar!

And yes, we talked about the cache plugin problems last week. The vulnerability is fixed by now.

It’s the era of Google plus and I think we should really work more on it to get more +1 s. I had an incident. I ran a giveaway contest and told the readers to +1 one of my posts. Fortunately , I got huge +1s and that post gradually began to rank in SERPs. Seems weird, but it’s real. By the way, awesome roundup Anna, such a huge post and I liked and enjoyed it the most. One thing I didn’t understand, what’s actually Indian Payday hack? Though I’m an Indian, I have never heard that.

Reply

Ana Hoffman May 5, 2013 at 11:00 am

Yes, Google+ is definitely something to pay attention to, Sidharth.

Many blogs are being hacked by a company that injects links to an indian payday loan company. How they do it, I am not sure, but any time your blog is hacked, it can’t be good.

Ana - why is it everytime I get to the end of one of your Marketing Skinnys I have at least several more tabs open following links? I tell you, you’re awesome on this - I always feel like you’ve helped me ‘get’ what some of the biggest news was I might have missed!

I always like checking out Hubspot’s “Science of…” information - I find it fascinating as so much of what we think drives shares and engagement sometimes gets turned on its’ ear. I also think it proves that studies don’t always recognize the influence a particular audience or niche has on those same results.

Alright, first Jon Loomer and now you have this new Flare social share thing going on (the circle icons with share counts beneath on the side)! I think it’s pretty neat but … Buffer! I love my Buffer and right now it’s the biggest reason I’m still using Digg on my sites (well, I’m using the slimmed down Digg Alternative version, but still!).

Have an amazing weekend and week ahead, Ana - You rock as always!

Reply

Ana Hoffman May 5, 2013 at 10:54 am

You should see all the tabs I have open when putting my skinnies together, Kat. :)

I do like the cleaner look of Flare plugin. Do you use a browser extension for Buffer?

Reply

Katrina Moody May 5, 2013 at 11:07 am

I do use the browser extension for Buffer (and love it!) I use the Alternative Digg plugin which includes Buffer on the Cafe site. If I had as much time as I wanted I’d code it all direct and be done with it, alas my time just doesn’t go as far as I’d like! Right now I have 23 tabs open *blushes* I’m a tab junkie!

I’m about to the point of using the Flare plugin for social sharing - I love how clean it looks … most Buffer fans use the browser extension right? :D

Reply

Ana Hoffman May 5, 2013 at 11:22 am

Right now I’ve got 3 windows with 10-15 tabs per open, Kat. I knew there was a reason I liked you! :)

I wonder how good Digg’s reader is going to be in comparison to Feedly.

I am still using Google Reader for the time being, but I will have to change to Feely or something else soon enough.

Matt Cutt’s 5 mistakes is interesting. I mean not having a website is a mistake. I guess you can’t rank if you don’t have a website. It’s interesting that he brought up Linkbuilding. Perhaps they are going focus even more on un-natural linkbuilding.

I know some people who have been successful in ranking niche sites, so I guess it all depends on how natural you make it look.

Awesome marketing skinny. I actually gave you a shout out for the Kindle Publishing post.

Just thought I would point out that it’s and ” i ” for iain not an “L”

It happens all the time.

They say the internet is all about developing connections, and I love your material, so it seemed like the perfect fit.

The one thing I dislike about Feedly is that when I share something via mobile, it add Feedly in the share which is annoying.

Reply

Katrina Moody May 4, 2013 at 2:35 pm

Oh! I’m so glad I’m not the only one a bit irked by that! Just had to butt in as I LOVE using Feedly but have been compiling a short list of “irks” :-)

I’m happy to hear that too. It is something so simple, but it bugs me so much.

Who would have thought there was someone else out there with the same annoyance.

Ana Hoffman May 5, 2013 at 9:48 am

Every time I mention you by name I wonder if it’s an I or an L, Iain. :) I even asked my husband what he thought…

Any reason you don’t capitalize your name?

Reply

iain May 5, 2013 at 10:46 am

It all depends on the font. If it’s a serif font with feet then it’s obvious. If it isn’t then it’s not obvious. Sometimes I will use my name in lower case just to show that it is a ” i ”

I capitalize my name, but as I mentioned it really depends on the font. Whenever I write my name I make sure it’s very obvious that it’s an i.

Reply

Ana Hoffman May 5, 2013 at 11:21 am

The way it shows up in my comments, I can’t really tell there’s a dot at the top; it just looks like a straight line.

Reply

iain May 5, 2013 at 2:50 pm

Ah well.

For any future reference it is the Scottish spelling of ian which is the typical way you see it. My name just has the extra i for iain.
