Weekly Marketing Skinny: March 2, 2013

Internet is overflowing with news.

Including marketing news, of course.

Yet, once you dig deeper for stories that REALLY make a difference to growing our businesses, they are far and few between.

The rest just waste our time.

Below, you’ll find a few headlines that you need to know about and nothing you don’t.

All without wasting your time digging through multiple sites, articles, and blog posts.

Your Marketing Skinny

Social Media

orange-checkTwitter-owned Posterous will close on April 30.

Yet another reason we should never-ever host anything of importance on a free third-party platform.

If you do have content on Posterous that you’d like to keep, here are instructions on how to move it.

orange-checkFacebook is holding a press event next Thursday to showcase a new look for Facebook’s newsfeed.

Google

orange-checkGoogle Appears To Be Busted With Its Own Paid Links AGAIN (source)

google paid ads

They are watched like a hawk, and yet they still do such a stupid thing?

orange-checkGoogle is now showing real live examples of pure spam pages they are manually removing from search results.

You can find them here.

I wouldn’t have cared that much but for this somber warning:

how google fights spam

Forbidden fruit…

Go ahead, check it out for yourself.

And no, there wasn’t anything “offensive, sexually explicit, or violent” when I looked through the latest removals.

Good riddance.

orange-checkGoogle has finally decided to publish their search quality rating guidelines publicly to the world.

You can access the 43-page PDF document over here (most recently updated November 2, 2012).

As you may remember, the document has been leaked back in 2008, 2001, 2012 and other times, when finally they said they were considering going public with that document. Today, they have.

WordPress

orange-checkHere’s a great post to bookmark for all your future WP needs:

Money

orange-checkHave you read my “make money online” rant published a couple of weeks ago?

If you read through the comments as well, you noticed that most commentators thought creating a product would be the way to go.

Here’s another take on it though, from Jane Sheeba of ProbloggingSuccess.com.

Notice that her own products make up only about 5% of her income.

Takeaway: one size doesn’t fit all.

You and I have to find what works for you and I and our readers.

Slideshare

orange-checkMy How to Write Awesome Facebook Status Updates Slideshare deck reached over 68,000 views.

I am planning on writing a more detailed post about what worked and what didn’t, but for now I’ll tell you this: Slideshare appears to be a powerful and underutilized content marketing player.

orange-checkMy new Slideshare deck is all fun, but with a moral: how to STAND OUT.

Take a look:

Think your readers will get a kick out of this presentation?

Got a comment on the last week’s marketing skinny:

barry's comment

First of all, thank you, Barry, for your support!

You did say out loud what’s been in my heart for a while: why am I having such a hard time getting the votes for this thing?

It’s not that difficult and with my kind of readership, no other blogger should be able to touch me, yet I am barely staying in the race…

If you have any ideas, let me know in the comments.

Or better yet, VOTE:

Thank You

To everyone who shared Traffic Generation Café with your readers/fans/followers in the past week - THANK YOU.

Reminder: I don’t always get pingbacks when you link to me. So please email me (if you are on my list), send me a tweet, or even better, stop by my Facebook page to let me know.

And by the way, it’s a great practice to stick to whenever you link out to ANYONE.

Big thumbs up to those who linked out to my this week (that I know of):

Ana,

I’ve seen tons of experts/gurus talking about getting big traffic boosts thru gimmicks.

Some other folks get lots of traffic the old fashioned way — because “They Earn It”. You are one who “Earns It”.

Hats off to you for providing the kind of value that keeps folks coming back. I will definitely give you my vote. Or, as we do it here in Chicagoland, my first, second, and third vote. :-)

Hi Ana,

Thanks for the mention. That was very kind of you!

You shared some great posts, too. I went and read most of them. Excellent content!

I’ll have to download and dig into the Google information. It never hurts to have an idea what Google is looking for.

Thanks again for being so generous and I hope you have a truly outstanding week!

Ana, I loved the Slideshare of twitter bio’s - so cleverly put together especially with the cute as a button kitten, who could not resist viewing it? Some of the bio’s are really unique. Loved the Pursuit of Shoes.

Hey Ana… it is good to know what is going on in the blogosphere! I just want to add something about Posterous! I don’t get it. I was told by a SEO expert that they are great and now they are closing? Funny! But it seems that it didn’t work, am I right? At least that is what I read in the comments.
Thanks for the article!

I’ve never used it, so don’t have any first-hand knowledge on how it worked, Felipe.

Hi Ana,

Thank you very much for such an informative post on what’s happening around blogging, I’m interested in the 43-page PDF document, but I can’t access it, Could you please take a look at the link? Thanks

Ana Hoffman March 4, 2013 at 6:40 am

Just checked the link, Tony; it’s working. Might’ve been a temporary glitch.

Another great and useful round up Ana.

I’ve voted for you twice on Tech Moms. I didn’t realise that I can go back every day and vote again.

So come on all you folk who are constantly telling Ana how great the content she gives you is. It costs you 20 seconds to click and vote for her. That’s all.

Is that too much for all that she gives you?

There’s only a couple of days more left in the race. Let’s give Ana the boost she needs to leap over the finish line in first place.

Apparently, it is too much to ask, Karen.

And thanks so much for voting!

I am not unhappy that Posterous will close on April 30. Half the time it didn’t work. I am really looking forward to you writing a more detailed post about what worked and what didn’t. Great following.

Reply

Ana Hoffman March 3, 2013 at 9:11 pm

That’s probably why they are closing…

Ana,

Thanks for the shout out. That post was a lot of fun to write. Every once in a while you have to step back to the lighter side of what we do with content marketing.

Otherwise another great roundup. I love what you’re doing with Slideshare.

Thanks

Hey Ana, Thank you for providing Google’s quality rating guidelines. I was totally unaware that was out. I have been out of seo for many months, buried under programming and development. After Google’s Panada update last spring I took some time off from search engine marketing. So, I have been WAY out of the loop, but it’s nice to be back and have something like this to dig my teeth into.

Thanks again!

Reply

Ana Hoffman March 3, 2013 at 9:03 pm

Same here, Michael; I’ve dropped everything SEO since the first Panda update - it was too much to keep up with. Feel more confident now; looks like you do too.
