Weekly Marketing Skinny • December 13, 2014

Last Updated on March 12, 2018 6 Comments

In the marketing spotlight this week:

♨ The Penguin algorithm will update continuously; ♨ add call-to-action buttons on Facebook Pages; ♨ Facebook dumped Bing search; ♨ ...and announced Facebook search; ♨ Google Hangouts and YouTube apps for Android updates; ♨ avoid copywriting issues with audio on YouTube; ♨ SlideShare launches free analytics; ♨ 50 Best Places to Work in 2015; ♨ Amazon's new "Make an Offer" feature; ♨ Google to shut down Google News in Spain; ♨ Bing has introduced Insights for Office; ♨ ... and much more.

Don’t have the time to read all the marketing news, blog posts, announcements, and other content related to SEO/social media/online marketing published each week?

I’ve got you covered.

I sift through trillions (well, hundreds) of online publications to stay on top of marketing news that might affect your online business.

And I package them neatly in bite-sized chunks in my Weekly Marketing Skinnies right here at Traffic Generation Café every Saturday morning.

Between you and me, I have no idea why I bother investing hours of my time weekly reading all these marketing news just to boil them down for you in my Weekly Marketing Skinnies, other than the fact that I know you don’t have the time to keep up with the fast-paced marketing industry on your own, yet you DO need to be in-the-know to remain competitive.

Plus, your enthusiastic comments and social media shares show me just how much you truly appreciate being kept in the marketing loop in just a few minutes per week.

[share]If you appreciate what I do, share this Marketing Skinny:[/share]

THANK YOU.

Now grab your cup of coffee and let’s catch up on the marketing news that matter to your business.

SEO

Google: The Penguin algorithm will update continuously.

What exactly does the Bing ranking algorithm consider Content Quality? Simple, but interesting insights.

Social Media

YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook have released their year in review - the most popular trends and top content from 2014. Here’s the Skinny on what each network saw in 2014.

Google+ post reshares will now look better (and stand out more) in your stream - with a box around them, plus a link to comments on the original post.

Google adds more gender options on Google+.

Google Hangouts for Android gets updates: ‘last seen’ timestamps, smart location sharing, and video filters.

Highlights from Q&A with Mark Zuckerberg, the professional T-shirt model: he dislikes the idea of ‘Dislike’ button and likes the idea of real names.

Facebook announced a new option for Pages — the ability to add call-to-action buttons to the top of Pages.

Now that Yahoo powers Firefox (and Microsoft’s Bing powers Yahoo), Facebook decided to go against the grain: dump Bing search on Facebook.

Why? Because Facebook launched its own Facebook Search.

And here’s what Conan O’Brien thinks of the new Facebook Search…

Facebook launched Trending Topics on mobile to make it easier for people on the go to explore stories from different sources.

Instagram hit 300 million users. Huge! Although it’s unclear if they are active users (see comments on the post).

YouTube for Android is updated with Material Design and gets search filtering.

You can now uncross those uploading fingers: YouTube gives creators more info about audio added to their videos.

Time to work on your Slideshare presentation skills: SlideShare launches free analytics.

And I don’t mean to brag (well, maybe just a bit), but do you know of any other platform where you can see numbers like these from a handful of presentations?

Marketing This & That

Here are a few tips from Google My Business team local businesses might benefit from this holiday season.

50 Best Places to Work in 2015: see how Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter did. (Twitter did a lot worse than you’d think…)

Amazon has announced a new “Make an Offer” feature that lets consumers negotiate prices with merchants in certain categories.

Google to shut down Google News in Spain as a result of a new Spanish law.

Bing has introduced Insights for Office, a new way to search for the information you need while in Office Word Online - looks like a very productive way to look up some facts while working on your project.

Google Maps now shows weather and location quick facts.

Starting January 31, 2015 Google will no longer support official compatibility of Google Analytics with Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 (IE9). Time to update!

Google has released the rebuilt Google app for iOS. Looks pretty slick!

Would you like to have your photos featured on products like Chromecast or Google Fiber? Find out how.

An original fully-operational 1976 Apple-1 computer has just sold on auction at Christie’s for $365,000. Want to see what it looks like?

Holiday Fun

For both kids and adults who still think they are kids, there’s a lot of fun to be had this holiday season.

That long winter break is coming up, so these are some great ways to keep your young ones busy.

Earlier this year, Google introduced a program called Made with Code to inspire millions of girls to try coding, and help them understand the creative things they can do with computer science. Right now on madewithcode.com, girls can use the introductory programming language Blockly to animate the lights of the state and territory trees that will decorate President’s Park, one of America’s 401 national parks and home to the White House, through the holiday season.

AT&T is out with Emoji Carols - a site on which you can create and customize your very own Emoji Carol by selecting a carol and assigning an emoji to each and every one of the lyrics in the song. Fun, fun, fun!

And don’t forget to have fun in Google’s Santa’s Village in the countdown to December 24!

Another great project for the entire family: why not create custom Holiday Cards this year! Peter Zvirinsky of InfoDiagram.com offered Traffic Generation Café readers a set of free editable New Year and Christmas icons for that special project of yours. You can download them here.

Also, here’s a quick Slideshare tutorial on How to Make Christmas Card in 5 minutes using PowerPoint:

Another awesome WMS Ana! I especially like your SlideShare update. Now that SS id offering free analytics, I was able to peek under the hood to see how many Clicks, Likes, Comments, Downloads and Emails sent on my most recent deck on How to Increase Your Social Media Presence.

I like how they show us (Viewers Tab) the Date, Location, Organization and Referrer site that triggered the View of the Deck.

I especially like how (Actions Tab) shows me the avatar of who recently download and liked this Deck and which slide generated a slick and the referrer source on this view.

Seeing who tweeted my Deck is going to come in handy for helping me ID who I should follow and engage with on Twitter.

Keep those Weekly Marketing Skinny’s coming. They’re great!

I am with you, Neil - the Slideshare Analytics addition was the best news of the week for those of us who understand the power of Slideshare. Hope more people will after seeing my results with it.

      Thanks for coming by!

    HAW!!

“Mark Zuckerberg, the professional Tee shirt model…”

Mark is showing us either that:

    1) He’s still irritatingly young

    2) He has exactly ZERO to prove

    or my favorite,

    3) BOTH of the above.

Wealth of info again Ana, it’s hard not to go into information overload every time you post a Skinny. I read them top to bottom and never get to EVERYTHING in depth. My only mechanism for coping with the plethora of info is to do two things:

First, I make a list of the bloggers that mentioned YOU. Because I know that’s where I’ll likely find other likeminded folks to follow, and to both add and extract big-value thoughts.

Second, reread the entire post once, but try and focus on ONE actionable piece of information… and ACT on it.

This Skinny, it’s going to be the Slideshare Analytics. I only JUST got started with Slideshare (your fault, btw 😉 ) but I feel as though this is going to end up being a heavy hitter for driving traffic to Shoestring101 and another blog I have that promotes a stock and options trading product.

Thanks again for the exhaustive (probably exhaustING as well)… CURRENT list of all things marketing.

    Keep Stepping,

    Kurt

It’s certainly easy to criticize Mark because of his position, but yes, he makes the best of it and then some.

I like your approach to act on one useful piece of info at a time and glad to hear you are going to pay more attention to Slideshare; with your sense of humor, I think you could be incredible making very entertaining and to-the-point presentations.

Off on a Tahoe trip with the fam, but will be around TGC.
