Nothing is new under the sun. Nothing is new in website traffic generation.
There’s no traffic generation strategy that one can claim as a “new breakthrough” that someone else hasn’t used years ago. That’s just the way it is.
So where does it leave us?
We need to learn how to use what we have to the fullest, and that’s what this post is all about.
Website Traffic Generation Secret #1: “Diversification“
You and I chose to build a business in an immature online world.
Why is it immature?
Take direct mail marketing, for instance. It’s been tested and proven and it works. If you can make it work for your business, you are as good as golden.
Online marketing, however, never stands still. It constantly changes and evolves, keeping us all on our toes, to say the least.
Remember what happened with Adwords? A few changes sent thousands of businesses down the drain; all because they chosen to put all their eggs in one basket.
I don’t know about you, but I want to sleep well at night - whenever I get to sleep, that is.
So I make a point to use as MANY website traffic generation ways as possible: 20-30 different sources at a time.
If any one of these traffic sources goes away for any reason, sure it might hurt a little, but my business will keep running.
Don’t ever think that this one brand NEW website traffic generation source will become the KEY to your future wealth.
Website Traffic Generation Secret #2: “Systemization”
So now that you have 10 or more unique traffic sources bringing you new visitors daily like clockwork, how do you keep track of it all?
Here are 3 simple steps I use to make sense of it all; start with one traffic source at a time:
1. Study: study the new website traffic generation strategy from a trusted authority on the subject, i.e. online course, ebook, training software, etc. Then put what you learned in theory into practice. After all, you’ll never know it works until you try it.
See what I use to master traffic generation:
2. Master: now that you know the new strategy works, you need to test it, tweak it, work on it until it becomes profitable. By “profitable” I mean until you can make one cent more than what you put into it.
3. Autopilot: once you are making one more cent than you invest into it, you need to figure out how to put this strategy on autopilot. That might mean getting automated software or outsourcing the task altogether.
After you complete all three steps, all you need to do is monitor the progress and more on to the next strategy.
Overtime, your sources will continue to grow and your business will start working as a well-oiled machine.
But remember, it all starts with ONE strategy and 3 simple steps to follow to make it work for you.
Website Traffic Generation Secret #3: “Set Goals”
If I were to ask you “What is your purpose of driving traffic to your website?”, would you be able to give me a clear and definite answer?
Let’s dig a bit deeper on this one.
When new visitors come to your website, what do you want them to do?
Subscribe to your RSS feed?
Opt in to your email list?
Check out the affiliate products you offer?
Buy into a membership site you have?
Whatever your goals are, you need to make sure you focus on ONE of them at a time and drive your traffic to fulfill that one specific goal.
Traffic that doesn’t take ACTION is useless and it’s your job to make sure you work on your traffic conversion goals even BEFORE you start driving traffic to your site.
Website Traffic Generation Secret #4: “Track Everything”
I am sure we are talking about something you already know here.
However, you and I both know that there’s a vast difference between knowing and doing.
Tracking your website traffic generation may be your single most money and time saving habit you can acquire.
I am often asked what is my single best secret to traffic generation, as if I were hiding something and as if there were such a thing.
The biggest secret here is you test everything until you find the BEST website traffic generation secret that works for YOU and YOUR business.
One size doesn’t fit all when it comes down to traffic.
Marketing Takeaway
You can’t play an NFL football team, unless you are one yourself.
You can’t create a successful business without knowing the basics.
And what you just read are the basics of website traffic generation. Period.

Ventured into blogging to follow a dream,
Gained so far, self- expression,
Hope to gain friends like you for feedback,
Thanks , Ana, for a great post full of tips.
You are welcome.
Another excellent post Ana,
Traffic is great, but without conversions you are just spinning your wheels and getting nowhere. I think Alex said it best “traffic generation without any conversion is useless.”
I have decided to take 2 forms of traffic generation, study them, master them and finally automate them and then move on to 2 more and so on. Anymore than that, I think will just overwhelm you and I am sure most of us got into a home business so we didn’t need to feel overwhelmed anymore. At least that is one of my reasons.
Have a great day Ana!
Incredibly good plan of action, Ian - that’s what I did with TGC and it worked.
Terry Conti says
Hi Ana,
There are many ways to get traffic and some are better than others only because what works for you may not work for someone else.
People should not get discouraged, if you keep at traffic generating methods and take them seriously and follow through, you will see results. Don’t overload yourself.
Thanks for this info Ana will be looking forward for more.
Terry Conti
I agree, Terry, overloading yourself without actually knowing really what you are doing mostly results in failure. Not a good thing 🙂
Great insight, Pete. A lot of people need to be informed of what exactly they need to be for them to be able to avoid those traps.
That’s what Traffic Generation Cafe is for 🙂
Ana:
When I first started, I was so focused on Google that I ignored everything else. A few months in I decided to check out other options. I am proud to say know that I have a diversified analytics portfolio!! 🙂
You are dead on with your strategy with this one!
Cheers,
Lisa
Great progress, Lisa 🙂 I’m proud of you!

I said it to you before and I’ll say it again for the readers - stay away from anything that sounds too good to be true. You probably see emails, Tweets, DMs, IMs, etc that claim stuff like “get 5,000 visitors for only $1” or “get submitted to over 1,000 search engines for a low price”.
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Thanks for the heads up, Max. I reckon that a lot of people fall into this kind of trap nowadays. It’s time for them to become aware of the facts.
Connie McKnight says
“Master: now that you know the new strategy works, you need to test it, tweak it, work on it until it becomes profitable.” - This point is so true and so much work trying to understand what works and what doesn’t. I am so grateful you take the time to educate us on all the things you’ve learned.
I try, Connie 🙂 Thanks for the kind words and enjoy your stay here on TGC!
Hi Anna,
Sincere congrats on what u have created with ur blog and u started only last year?
wow, ur alexa ranking is veeery impressive
U broke down ur traffic sources in one of the comments above.
Do you have other posts showing how u do it in terms of how you get automatic traffic from these sources?
cheers
Jack Foley
Oh I have a lot of them, Jack. Feel free to search and thanks for the kind words.
Hi Ana,
I really like how you always break things down into manageable bits. There isn’t much new about generating traffic, but there are certainly new ways you can become more efficient and effective.
Thanks for sharing these wonderful tips - as usual 😀
Thanks for the kind words, Kiesha 🙂 Thanks for stopping by.
Hi Ana-
Lovin’ the tips and expertise from post and your commentors. Your last paragraph really stuck a cord: knowing the basics.
I’m reading your SEO Report and vowing to spend 15 minutes everyday until it’s not so foreign.
I’m starting to get guest offers, so I like the reinforcement from Val. Also, I’m trying to optimize my presence on FB. I’ve met some really wonderful and supportive people on Twitter, so that’s worked quite well.
Jane hit the nail on the head, it takes consistency, patience, and persistence. Traffic generation is well, like any endeavor in life, right?
Thanks Ana!
Quite right, Linda! It’s nice to know that you are enjoying your stay here. Keep us all posted on the improvements that you make 🙂
Hey Ana,
Great points you’re sharing here. The big mistakes that most marketers make is to over-diversify because they want to see the results yesterday. Of course, they end up unfocused and overwhelmed, with no or little results to show.
As you point out, the key is to take one step at a time. Pick one or two strategies and learn everything there is to learn and master them to perfection.
Marketers who are not tracking their traffic are really wasting their time and dollars. How can you establish what’s working and what’s not if you don’t track your efforts? Marketing is all about testing, tweaking and building on what produces the desired results.
Have a great week, Ana!
Mavis
I couldn’t agree more, Mavis, great insights 🙂
You have a great week, too!
Diversification seems to make huge sense when it comes to traffic generation since as you so accurately point out, things are changing all the time so to rely on only a few sources of traffic is to open yourself up to more vulnerability than is necessary.
~Marcus
Definitely, Marcus!
Mastering your traffic generation though is the key, whatever methods you end up choosing.
Welcome back to TGC, Marcus!
Great tips. It’s so important to create your website with conversions in mind. Know what it is that you want to get out of the website- sale? lead? a call to set up an appointment? All aspects of the website should be a clear path, with call to actions, to get the user to convert.
You got that right, Nick. Traffic conversion is almost as important as traffic generation 🙂
Hi Ana,
Part three rang a bell for me, because I have all those goals for my readers, other than to enjoy the content. I never really concentrated on one particular goal at a time, but I will in the future.
By the way, I’m up at 3:45 AM, farmers hours, I guess. Don’t ask me to a webinar after 9 PM, though. :))
Lou
So you are an early riser, huh? 🙂
Concentrating your efforts on a certain goal works great - your readers will most likely go for it my more readily.
By the way, Lou, when you leave a comment don’t use “/” symbol; use @ instead.
Ana,
What I like is that most of what you mentioned is easy to put into place. It might be a little steppy and take some time but once those things are in place they are easy to keep going. For example - getting your tracking tools in place. Once you have the set up it is easy to go and look at what is going on. I like how you call it Systemization.
20 - 30 sources is a good goal. I am going to have to examine that for my site. Looking forward to this weeks posts.
I’m glad to know, Sheila. You keep us posted on your progress 🙂
Glad to have you here.
It ain’t easy at all. No matter how hard I try, Google remains my biggest source of traffic thus I remain at its mercy. I’m working on Facebook traffic now and it’s gradually picking up.
Any traffic strategy deserve certain respect and time commitment, Udegbunam.
If social media is your pet-peeve, than you probably need to figure out what you are doing wrong and start from scratch.
Good luck with that!
Getting systematic with traffic generation techniques is an important thing to do for regularizing the flow. Most bloggers will get enthusiastic about one strategy that is suggested by their favorite blogger and try that out. But they don’t follow that up. They forget about that strategy all together and move on to another method, without actually tracking what results that particular technique gives out. Consistency, patience and persistence matter a lot when it comes to traffic generation.
Jane.
I’ve been guilty of that in the past, Jane, and only once I was able to focus on one strategy at a time and master it, then I became truly good at generating traffic.
Thanks for coming by!

Always good to hear your ideas, love people being focused on a topic and that certainly is you and traffic =)
It would be a shame not to focus on traffic generation at Traffic Generation Cafe, Ray! 🙂
