Tumblr: How to Get Free PR7 Links Within Minutes

tumblr link building

Why don't you listen to the (strange-looking) man...

Tell me you found an easy and quick link building technique, and you’ll have my full attention.

Tell me that technique will generate high PR, Dofollow links back to my blog for FREE, and I’ll get to work right there and then.

That’s pretty much what happened when I heard of this link building strategy using Tumblr.

But first things first.

What is Tumblr?

Tumblr is a free micro-blogging platform that allows you to post video or audio files and images in addition to text.

how to set up tumblr

If it’s too long to tweet, but too short to write a substantial blog post about, it’s perfect for Tumblr.com.

It’s similar to Posterous, but simpler to use. Some might say it’s even more powerful than Posterous.

So what?

Great, you say, yet another thing to add to my to-do list, Ana.

Allow me to explain what makes Tumblr such a good addition to your link building strategy.

Tumblr Is…

1. PR8 website.

Which means that it has a lot of authority to pass to your blog and other web properties.

2. Dofollow.

All the links you post to Tumblr are Dofollow.

If you are not sure what Dofollow means, take a look at this post.

3. Self-publishing platform.

You can pretty much publish whatever you want to Tumblr, as long as you don’t violate their Terms of Service, of course.

Let’s compare that to any article directory, say EzineArticles.com.

With EzineArticles, you submit an article, then wait and hope that it passes the moderator’s “inspection”. Additionally, they have strict backlinking rules that limit you as to where to add your links, how many, how many keywords in your anchor text you can use, etc.

No such problem with Tumblr.

So you can pretty much treat it as your personal article directory that gives you just as much, if not more, link juice as any traditional article directory - without the hassle.

4. SEO-friendly.

I’ve seen many Tumblr blogs rank very highly on Google for some very competitive keywords.

How I Use Tumblr for Link Building

These are some very simple, effective, and quick techniques I can implement within minutes.

1. Publish summaries of my blog posts.

Just a few sentences will do with a keyword-rich link or two back to my post.

2. Use OnlyWire.com or Ping.fm

Both of these free services allow you to bookmark your posts to several social media/micro-blogging platforms at the same time.

Tumblr is one of them.

3. Import your RSS feeds.

Tumblr used to have an import RSS function, which allowed you to connect your Tumblr blog with your WP blog, Twitter account, etc.

A couple of months ago they quietly did away with that feature.

However, where there’s a will, there’s a way, right?

There are some WP plugins you can use to connect Tumblr with your WordPress blog, but most of them are not very well suited for the job. For instance, Tumblrize will cross-publish your entire posts, which will create duplicate content issues and render your backlinks worthless.

The best solution I found is TumblRSSApp.com.

It allows you to add several RSS feeds and is entirely free.

tumblr rss settings image

Notice the last drop-down box in the image above that says “select post type“.

You’ll have 2 choices here: text or link. I suggest you choose “link” for your blog RSS feed and “text” for your Twitter link. I had to experiment to learn this essential piece of information.

How to Get High PR Dofollow Backlinks from Tumblr

Of course, I saved the best for last.

In this video, I’ll show you how to get dofollow links from high PR pages on Tumblr within minutes and with minimal effort.

Brief video summary:

  1. Create an account at Tumblr.com
  2. In URL field enter your main keywords with dashes between them.
  3. Confirm your email address.
  4. Click on “Untitled” ==> “Customize Appearance”. Choose a free theme.
  5. Go under “Settings”.
  6. Check “Use custom domain box”. Add your domain name without http or “/”.
  7. Enable SEOQuake. Do a Google search with this command site:tumblr.com “liked this”
  8. Find high PR pages. Click on them one by one.
  9. Once on a page, click on “Reblog” in the upper right corner.
  10. Refresh the page to make sure your keywords show up as the last name in “Notes”.

Originally, I learned this tactic from SEO Experts Academy - the best course on how to generate a flood of SEO traffic I’ve ever seen.

This Tumblr link building strategy is only one of many they teach you in the course. If you are finally ready to get a grip on your search engine traffic, SEO Experts Academy is definitely the way to go:

Hi Ana,

Your post is awesome. However, I certainly have doubts about the link value you get from these. Getting these type of “do follow” and “high PR” backlinks satisfies only the psychology of the person seeking the backlink from these sites but certainly not Google.

I am sure Google algorithm is much more smarter ….I am pretty certain that it devalues those links which are not contextual and non niche related and especially from these unmoderated social sites.

Well, do you have a case study to substantiate the effect of these links? It will be very useful if you can.

Why I ask this? If you can prove me this works as a link building strategy, I can create an automated tool to create accounts and post to these tumblr blogs, like and reblog.

Thanks :-)

Ana Hoffman November 22, 2011 at 5:41 pm

A couple of things, Saikat:

-Tumblr is not a social media platform, rather a blogging platform, so placing links like that equates to making comments.

-Of course, contextual links are much more valuable, but can we get 10-15 of those within minutes? Certainly not. Quantity matters too.

-Relevancy is overrated.

And no, I don’t have the time or desire to do any research into how valuable these links really are. LOL

I tried this method but got penalized by google. I was on the top of the second page for a competitive term and google already dropped me down to page 7. Can you suggest any way to remedy this? Thanks

Reply

Ana Hoffman November 22, 2011 at 11:03 am

I don’t think it’s because you dropped some links in Tumblr, Anne.

Fluctuations in rankings are absolutely normal. Consistent link building is what will get you and keep you on top.

I have found an easy and quick link building technique. I hope I have your full attention. :)

I came across this tool a couple of weeks ago, and have been using the free version. The idea is that you can submit 1 URL every day for 25 do-follow backlinks. Simple. The PRO version lets you submit more URLs for more backlinks, but the free version seems to work just fine.

There are full instructions, including videos on their site:

Great post by the way - I love how simple this is!

I suggest to build as many links as possible overtime.

Let’s say you build 10-20 links now. Then you do the same search for high PR Tumblr blogs after the next PR update and do some more link building. Link building never stops and one link is never going to do it.

It’s unfortunate this technique has now become public because I see Tumblr high PR posts getting spammed. The one Matt showed in his video had about 160 “likes” and now has thousands. Two problems with this - the link juice is considerably diluted and it’s only a matter of time that Tumblr will stop this feature if it gets abused.

I love this post and I have actually been using Tumblr for awhile (via OnlyWire) to create links for articles and blog posts. I’m a little confused about something though. If I add my blog url (as in step 6 under the video) doesn’t that make it so that when people go to my tumblr blog it gets redirected to my main blog and wouldn’t that make posting my blog posts and such on the tumbr blog kind of pointless? I’m not sure if I’m missing something or what. LOL

Wow Ana, great tips. I actually have a question for you though.

Say the URL you want is taken. I understand you have to put dashes, but say you wanted to target, Ana-Hoffman-is-the-greatest-blogger but it was taken, could you just add another dash and an x or do you have to completely think of a new keyword phrase; what-is-blogging (say it had several thousand searches and what you were personally targeting), how could you still target that keyword, without deviating too much?

Thanks!

Reply

Ana Hoffman November 13, 2011 at 8:06 am

Good question, Dan.

You could definitely add a simple word at the end like “tools” or “tips” or, as you said, just a simple “x”.

I think that would be a better solution to diluting your links with less targeted keywords.

Speaking of Ana-Hoffman-is-the-greatest-blogger… Better go see if it’s taken… LOL

Thank you Ana for your great tips! :-) I love your Blog!

I set up a Tumblr account about a year ago when I set up Posterous, but they’re certainly weren’t any great guiding tips like this around then.

My Tumblr name is not hyphenated in the tumblr url, but just 2 words joined as one, while on the dashboard it appears as 2 words without hyphen.

I would like to start again, or redo if I can, or cancel that account and set up new account. But as you say, I probably won’t be able to do that because my blog url is already taken in their system.

I’ve tried to backtrack and add hyphen to my name (since it said in set up new blog that you can change it any time), but it freezes on “saving…” and doesn’t take. Same when I choose the Minimalist theme, it just freezes on “saving…” and doesn’t take.

Any suggestions?

Thanks again for the wonderful info you share so freely.

If you go under “Settings”, Kathy, you can unlink your site URL and then create a new account.

Let me know if this works.

Reply

Kathy from Success Mastery November 15, 2011 at 6:36 am

Thanks Ana :-)

I guess because of the way I set up my first Tumblr account via Posterous network, the emphasis was on short posts using anchor text links pointing back to my blog in the blog post content.

Because of that I discovered that my blog domain was not entered as a custom domain. While I could access Settings, having selected Minimalist free theme just was not saving…

So, I just moved on and set up my new account - success-how-to with my blog’s url entered as custom domain, and it all worked, and I’ve reblogged 1 PR5 and 2 PR4s.

Thanks again Ana for your help

Ana,

Great tip as I always. I have been using this method for a while. However, I just want to warn new users; Lately it seems like tumbler is catching up to this trick and is banning accounts left and right. So, if you do use this method, be careful not to go over board with it.

And Steve is absolutely correct in that they do ban your IP for life. I have been hearing about similar case a lot on a few online forums I participate in.

Hey Ana, when I first got on Tumblr, I enjoyed it so much but I abandoned it for the past few months. Maybe it’d be worth it to revive it for link building purposes. I think I tried something similar to what you listed with the RSS feed with the last company I worked at. Hopefully it can work again.

Hi Ana,

Oh you always have the best tips! This took me a bit longer as I had to install SEOQuake.

How many times should or do you need to reblog posts?

Any worries about being penalised for this technique?

I’ve tried it and done a few reblogs linking to each of my real blogs.

Thank you:) Off to tweet and share now!

You can reblog as many times as you’d like, Annabel - all depends how many links you’d like.

There’s absolutely no penalty for this - this is a Tumblr function and we are not doing anything black hat by using it.

Yeah, I remembered it from a comment you made before. And btw, just a way to find the high PR page you want when SEOQuake refuses to work (it’s acting weird these days).

1) Do the search with the search phrase you mentioned normally. But change the search settings to 100 results per page. And uncheck the “Google instant” option (as it won’t work with this option turned on).

2) Turn on SEOQuake and hit the “PR” button to show the actual PR of those pages.

3) Press “Ctrl + F” to open the search box of your browser.

4) Type in “PR: ?” and hit enter. With the “?” is the value you want to find. For example, PR: 7 will find all PR7 pages out there (if there is any). And you can do the same with other numbers.

That’s it, a little time saving tip :) All the best Ana!

Not only that, but if your post gets reblogged, it appears on another Tumblr blog, resulting in another backlink.

Plus Tumblr blogs (being connected to the powerful main domain) aren’t really at risk of the sandbox.

Reply

Ana Hoffman November 9, 2011 at 6:46 pm

Two great points, Gregory.

I need to start paying more attention to Tumblr - beyond link building.

Reply

Gregory Ciotti from Delaware SEO November 9, 2011 at 6:51 pm

Tumblr can be a great opportunity, but it relies mostly on image blogs rather than quality writing in order to get noticed (because images are reblogged far more often).

Also, one problem with Tumblr is that they do not allow affiliate marketing, although I do believe they allow advertising (no idea why the divide, but oh well).

Largely though, if you pic a humorous or unique niche and focus on images, Tumblr can become a way to create really popular blogs quickly, but it’s hard to build a list and monetize there.

Michael S. November 9, 2011 at 5:24 pm

Thanks for sharing this technique! Instead of looking for high PR pages I am more focusing on relevance. Seems like this could get abused. Not to mention most of the really high PR tumblr pages have tons of activity and other links to force yours out.

Reply

Ana Hoffman November 9, 2011 at 6:26 pm

I know of many SEO’s who debate the importance of relevance, Michael.

Also, all Tumblr links, no matter how many, always stay on the same page as far as Google is concerned. So if you can’t see them all, Google can.

Daniel November 9, 2011 at 4:10 pm

Nice Video, Ana..

You had the same(Actually similar) problems as I had with SEO Quake.

When they did recent upgrades(Update) a number of parameters in the Seoquake bar would either not work, or only do so on occasion.

I only just read a post by a reasonably successful Blogger, who stated that Stumblr had in some ways saved his site. He said this not just in relation to the Links made available or Traffic to site possibilities, though more in regards to the social interaction with others through the Stumblr service.

I do love SEOQuake, but it never really works as well as it should for me, Daniel.

I don’t use StumleUpon myself (just no time), but from everything I read, it doesn’t generate very well-converting traffic.

As far as social interaction is concerned, I can definitely see the value in that.

Just one word of warning to all who use tumblr. They are really serious about affiliate links. Before I knew what I was doing I wrote a couple of articles on Tumblr and had an affiliate link in one, I guess. I didn’t pay attention to it for months later, and wen to check on day, and now my whole IP is banned. I can’t even get to Tumblr to open a new account.

Just a word of warning a Tumblr ban seems pretty final so play by their rules.
