Comment posted on Google PageRank: When Your Think PR, Think Public Relations by Patrick Simspon

I was completely unaware that google didn’t really own their page rank system, I have been aware that it takes google 60 to 90 days to index most pages. I am not sure that one should not worry about page rank, but I do agree that you should always strive to give your readers content that is useful for them to grow.

Thanks

I have to agree that it is better if you are able to get quality links to your blog, versus quantity. I am still pretty new to business blogging, with that being said every e-book I have read on the subject has said that your SEO could be hurt, causing you to rank poorly in the serps. 3years ago I had (still do but am not ready to start back up just yet) a blog to help readers find software that they could that could help them learn to play guitar, I did’t have any links and managed to rank on the top serps page because of my keyword usage. I didn’t realize that I was where I needed to be then, until recently. I have to say that keyword research is 1 before worrying about building links.

    Thanks

Hey Ana, great post, I am still learning to create more traffic for my blog and I have been hereing about Scribe in a number of places. Is it the best plugin for SEO? I assume it is, since you use it. I know it is a paid plugin for wordpress. Are there any free plugins that can do the same things or close to what Scribe does? Thanks

Although the post content is excellent as always, Ana, you said it all with “Focus on building a great blog. Engage your readers. Write outstanding content.” It’s so easy to get caught up in all the off-site stuff that we can forget that the core ingredient to a successful blog is the content!

Hi Ana,
Nice to knowing these. My PR has been dropped from 2 to zero now since I haven’t been able to updating my content about 3-4 months. But I noticed that the drop didn’t bother my visitors traffic’s chart to my blog. I know it as order from my costumers keep coming through. And they are new visitors. The most concern thing for me right now is Alexa ranking. It does quite affect.

Ana trafficgenerationcafe.com January 15, 2011 at 9:15 pm

You visitors will stay because of your content, not your standing with search engines, that’s for sure!

Sorry to hear about your rank drop, but I am sure you’ll be able to build it back up in no time.

As far as I know Google PR was last updated in April 2010 and since then it’s not changed at all. And late I got to know that Google will not update PR as it won’t consider relevant while ranking websites. So I stop bothering about Google PR.

Here I think you’re very right by saying that be concerned about Public Relation rather than Google PR. Another amazing tip…;)

You and Robert must be the only two left that don’t know my thought on this. lol. That’s exactly how I write.

From Title to Signature it is written wholly/Solely with the reader in mind, not the engines. (How Google themselves tells you to write, btw)

During proof-reading before publishing is where I would interject what SEO I knew, WITHOUT screwing with my “voice”.

In response to comments further down…I’ve never gone back days/weeks/months later, as I’ve never known what ranked for what; never checked.

NOW, that said, keep in mind, my sole promotional efforts for 2 or more years was blog commenting (primarily on commentluv enabled blogs), never giving engines a second glance.

2011 will see me branching out in promotional methods, including some more refined SEO perhaps…still not done by me though; outsourced.

THAT said, no one will ever mess with my “voice” for mere SEO purposes….readers first, always.

I think I need a nap now…

When you’ve been monitoring that little green bar since it was born (as I have, and you too probably?) it’s hard not to sneak a quick peak to see how full it is, even though you know it’s a pointless metric.

Very interesting to see the exclusive licensing rights to PageRank is running out in 2011. Maybe that’ll be the time to switch if off.

Hi Ana,
PR is just what it says it is just something used for public relations (ex. Hello, I have a PRX blog do you want to guest post ….).

I know that many boost about their PR and say their an authority etc, but the fact is that PR only analysis the power of the links that are pointing to your blog and not the authority, influence, subscribers you may have.

Creating a great blog doesn’t and shouldn’t involve any PR discussions (other then the one referring to public relations), but it should concentrate on how to provide content that someone would find useful and worthy to be read.

I completely agree Ana.

To me, it does make sense to me that Google would stop broadcasting this number as focusing on that one number kind of misses the point.

PR always seemed to be about building a community and gaining exposure and status outside of that community. Just my view, of course. No one at Google called me about any of this. ;)

So, I just concentrate on those things rather than a number that only changes every few months, or half a year, or never.

Have a great day!

Ana - Thanks for the recap on PageRank. Given that I wrote an article on why Link Auuthority might be a better metric that PageRank back in September, I really should know better, but I still look at the little PR indicator in my Toolbar when evaluating a blog. Then, I remind myself to take a breath and focus on the fact that it is just a snapshot from March/April. But old habits are hard to break.

Hey Ana,
I would say that you did this research to help us/you and you are actually reminding us of building a blog 101.
I keep reading/seeing/hearing so much about stuff that are advanced blogging from - newbies.
No matter how boring it sound, content is still a king and nothing will ever change that (I hope, lol) because that is THE best legitimate way to build links.
You have great content and it is the best proof of what I am saying. So instead of so many people talking about some advance blogging, how about doing the basic things first.

Just a little example why content is the king. I got several pingbacks (or are they trackbacks) from blogs linking to a post of mine that became kinda popular. I check each and every blog that links to me and only after I am sure it is legitimate I will approve the pingback.
So I got this pingback from a blog that has no original content on it. The published a part of my post and link to my post saying read more. I bet you get hundreds of those.
I didn’t approve, he/she didn’t get the link, end of story.

If they had any content on it…they would get the link.

You are so right, Brankica - some bloggers skip the basics altogether and move on to the important part: how can we milk our readers for all they are worth.

Yes, I do get tons of spam pingbacks. I always check them first and they never get a link back.

Ya I recently read that thread about Google’s PR at the webmaster forum. Since then I stopped looking at the little bar when I load web pages. But the awareness is just now on people. I would say that still a substantial number of people believe G’s PR to be the golden scale to judge a website’s quality. That’s unfortunate.

Google PageRank does not pay the bills, even if a high-ish PR allows some webmasters to charge more for ads on their website. If the PR was gone completely from today (as in: no way top check the little green bar any more), what would these webmasters do?

I got a PR6 on a 1.5 year old blog! SO WHAT? It still only get ~100 uniques a day because the content is not updated regularly. Think quality content, quality links and everything else should follow.

Well done my friend. But alas, would I think anything else from you?!
I know bloggers keep saying they don’t care about PR, yet we still check that litle bar every now and again to see if there is some change…anything at all. It’s going to be a hard habit to break!
I do think the other 200+ metrics Google uses to internally rank our pages is more of what we should realy be centering our attention on. For those that desperatley need a PR update or need some sort of validation on that front, there is always mozRank. It’s updated monthly and it offers page and domain ranking. They also correlate pretty closely with Google PR.
Anyways, the one thing I have been trying to do this year is just write the content. Write first, tweak it up after. If I go into my content thinking, “oh my where can I put a link” my content will suffer.
Kudos on your rankings Ana~~~ WELL deserved.

Hi Ana, awesome job with the research. I can tell a lot of work goes into your post.

I believe it is more important to have a interesting blog than a high page rank. Although it does have some benefits. I write in several blogs across a few different niches. The blogs I have that have 2 or higher page rank usually get better rankings than my 0 to 1 page rank blogs.

Another thing I noticed about some of my blog post from my pagerank 3 and 4 blogs is that they tend to stay ranked high longer for long tail keyword phrases.

My lower page rank blogs, do shoot to the first page for some long tail words but they tend to also get dropped much much faster.

Before I started really becoming a blogger, I didn’t realize the power of community. With that being said if a person focuses more on relationships and having an interesting blog that person can certainly get much more traffic than some higher page rank blogs out there.

Thanks for sharing

Some bloggers do an insane amount of link building, but since they don’t focus on great content and their readership, any traffic they get from SEs ends up just bouncing at best.

Thanks for coming back, Larry - such a pleasure to hear your intelligent opinion on the issue.
