How I Increased My Traffic More than 10 Times in 2 Months

increase your traffic Looking for traffic?

I don’t know about you guys, but I care a lot about my traffic.

Traffic means power and I love power.

In this little story I am going to tell you how I increased my traffic 10 times in 2 months time.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying it is easy, but if done effectively you can see nice results quite fast. No, I didn’t worked 9 to 5 every day for 2 months, but I was on it every two days for a few hours.

All the work happened in December 2010 and January 2011 and it consisted in starting a well-planned link building campaign for one of my hair care blogs.

Traffic stats

I am going to start by showing you the results first.

Below you can find the screenshot taken from my Google Analytics account where you can see my traffic stats starting from December 2010 to May 2011.

As you can observe, before starting to implement this method I was getting on average 30 visitors a day and around 40 impressions or so.

You can pretty easily guess that I didn’t make much money off that SEO traffic, even though the niche I was in had a nice CPM.

Looking at the picture above you can see traffic increasing nicely during January and February 2011 just after I started my one way link building campaign. The daily traffic I get now averages 350 unique hits a day and close to 1000 page impressions still increasing slowly month by month.

Almost 90% of the traffic comes from Google searches, so the visitors reading the blog are really targeted; therefore the conversion rates are pretty good, generating a nice income considering that the traffic is still not that big after all.

The link building tips that I used to get my blog to rank so high in Google consists mostly of article submission and guest posting, but also some other activities like forum posting or Yahoo Answers replies.

These methods can be easily applied by anyone, however there are several tips and tricks I consider extremely important in achieving your goals in a shorter period of time.

Before we proceed I would like to mention that you should focus more on guest posting and article marketing, because two have been the most effective methods used.

Relevancy and authority

SEO is all about relevancy and authority.

You want to make sure that your guest posts will be published in a relevant place, on blogs or websites that are obviously in the same niche as yours, but more than that, on blogs that rank highly in Google for the keywords you are trying to rank for.

It is a good idea to have a keyword in mind when you are guest posting.

Take Problogger.net for example.

As you can see in the screenshot below, as I am writing this, Problogger.net ranks #1 in Google for the keyword “make money blogging”.

What does this mean?

It means that Google sees Problogger.net as the best resource on the internet on the “make money blogging” topic. Now, if you want to rank highlyt for the same keyword, who would you ask to give you reference?

It’s just like in the offline world.

Getting a link from Problogger.net and trying to rank for “make money blogging” is like applying for a job as a programmer and having a reference from Bill Gates.

See what my point is?

Anchor text

Having your guest post on relevant and established blogs is great, but having a good anchor text for your link is the ultimate goal you should have in mind.

This is very difficult as you cannot expect people to let you spam their blogs with SEO’d links. You usually get one or two links in the author box having the name of your blog as the anchor text.

However, you can get away with this if you own a nicely SEO’d domain name. Having keywords inside your domain name will give you an advantage.

One good example is dailyblogtips.com. Daniel could easily have his anchor text set to “Daily blog tips” because that is the name of his blog and, therefore, he will benefit from the advantage of having his keywords in the anchor text.

Don’t underestimate anchor text importance.

Quality

Make sure all the articles you are submitting to article directories or to other bloggers that accept guest authors are top quality, especially when you are posting for a high traffic blog.

Your article will be exposed to a very big audience so you want to make a good impression.

Don’t keep your best posts for yourself. Give them away.

Marketing Takeaway

What I wanted to tell you all with through this post is that you don’t have to be an internet guru to build your traffic.

All you need to do is have a strategy.

Make a plan.

Don’t just send out a whole bunch of guest posts randomly. Keep in mind four things: relevancy, authority, keywords and quality.

I would love to hear your experience with link building and other SEO best practices.

What is your strategy? How do you implement it? What were your results so far?

Excellent report. I have been amazed at how many high page rank sites will allow your comments with your URL if you do not put http. To my surprise, some of them have been counted as links. In article marketing, Is it wise

to submit same article to about 5 or 6 directories?

what is the optimum number of links in each article 1 or 2 or 3?

Is it better to make each link to a separate URL?

Say keyword 1 to main site URL and keyword 2 to an inner page URL.

Would that be counted as two unique links by the search engines?

By the way, I like the layout of your site, unique and different.
My sincere thanks for allowing my comment!

Ana August 23, 2011 at 9:24 am

Hi, Gilbert:

1. You CAN submit the same article to several directories, but the quality of links will go down since Google might not index several copies of the same article.
2. Optimum number of links: depends on the article directory and their rules.
3. Yes, you should ALWAYS have only one link to the same URL per page - Google won’t count more than one.

Nothing can beat the quality of an article whether you its for distribution or for your own website. This can determine if your first time visitors will eventually be your recurring visitors.

My blog does alright but I haven’t been able to take that next step. Guest blogging is something I’ve considered trying as a new way to build links and potential interest in my site. Thanks for the article.

Hey Cristian,

Congratulations on your great traffic results! Well done :)

Agreed - with guest posting, you can attract new eyeballs to your content. Your content would be put in front of a new audience which can turn into a much needed traffic to your blog.

Thanks for sharing these easy to implement strategies.

All the best,
Mavis

Daniel June 6, 2011 at 5:32 am

Amazing results , Cristian.

I ten fold increase in a few months is a great achievement.

As mentioned by Rison Simon above, I have also heard that guest Posting is ” The Big thing” at present.

Having quality content(And something to offer) should be the main goal, as it would pay off once those Posts(Pages) begin reaching the top in the search results.

Cristian June 6, 2011 at 5:41 am

Thanks for the comment Daniel. I truly believe that guest posting and networking with other bloggers in your niche are essential.

Lorelie June 1, 2011 at 11:02 pm

I can really say how popular you are as a blogger. I can remember seeing one of you guest post in other blogs, but I forgot the website. Those were perfect tips to generate possible traffic not to mention to have it doubled I guess. Nice shares you have it there as always..

Brad Harmon May 31, 2011 at 11:43 pm

Thanks for sharing your results with us, Christian. Guest posting is a great way to build your authority, develop relationships, expand your community, and generate traffic.

I liked this piece of advice:

“Don’t just send out a whole bunch of guest posts randomly. Keep in mind four things: relevancy, authority, keywords and quality.”

Make a plan and target your opportunities. That’s the key, isn’t it?

Cristian June 2, 2011 at 1:43 am

Thanks Brad, I am glad you liked it.

dave May 30, 2011 at 9:34 am

Very interesting post Cristian; encouraging that it only took you a couple of hours every couple of days - and you doubled traffic in 2 months! May I ask how many articles you were submitting each week?

Cristian May 30, 2011 at 11:13 am

Actually my traffic increased 10 times, not doubled. I think around 5 articles per week, but that is not the important aspect. As I said in my post, relevancy, authority, anchor (and keyword research) are the important factors.

dave May 30, 2011 at 11:23 am

I just read it again - amazing at 10 times increase in just 2 months! Very encouraging. Would you suggest varying the keyword mix you use (or just to target your main one)?

Cristian May 30, 2011 at 12:02 pm

It depends on the competition. Anyway, these days almost any niche is very competitive, so I would target long tail keywords rather than just “main” keywords. Use Google’s keyword tool to find long tail searches that are popular and have low competition.

Guest blogging is undoubtedly a good strategy but I was looking at traffic sources for my blog recently Twitter actually brought me the most traffic even though I’ve been lucky enough to get featured on some very well known blogs over the last few months.

I’m still at the stage of trying out different strategies for increasing my blog traffic but am slowly but surely building up a loyal following.

Ana May 29, 2011 at 7:50 am

That’s excellent, Jamie. I hope you find your ideal strategy soon. Thank you for stopping by.

Jens P. Berget May 28, 2011 at 12:54 am

I would say that you should build a relationship first, before you contact them regarding a guest post. This makes a huge difference. So, if you haven’t commented on any of their posts, it’s going to be rather difficult to be accepted as a guest blogger. Well, unless your post is brilliant :)

Jens

Cristian May 28, 2011 at 10:52 am

Hi Jens,
That is a very good tip.

Jens P. Berget May 28, 2011 at 12:50 am

Hi Cristian,

My strategy is a little different than yours, although I believe your strategy is great. And your examples shows that it’s working.

I don’t think about numbers at all. I don’t actually focus on traffic. I focus entirely on people and building relations. One of the reasons for this, is that if we look at the stats, one person is just one person, it doesn’t matter who he is. I am worth just as much as Darren Rowse of Problogger. So, by focusing on the personal relationships, it’s a lot easier to distinguish the most important people in your niche from other people. And I’m not talking about the gurus. I’m actually talking about people who are at the same level as I am, or just above or just below. Connecting with those kind of people has made a huge difference in my life as a blogger, and I have learned a lot from it.

To me, building relationships with a few people, have been a lot more important than guest posts and writing articles. On the other hand, if I had more time, I would probably do both :)

Jens

Cristian May 28, 2011 at 10:56 am

Blogging is more and more about social media/networking, so yeah, you are right from one point of view. Building relationships with people is your niche may lead to profitable partnerships, but I wouldn’t go as far as not focusing on traffic anymore.

Ray May 27, 2011 at 8:52 pm

It definitely doesn’t happen over night and takes time and patience. You really need to keep doing it consistently. It is easy to get discourage, give up and quit. If you stick to your game plan it can pay off. I like a variety of sites and methods and sites. But, I know some people spend too much time with it every day that I sometimes wonder if they have a social life outside the internet.

Cristian May 27, 2011 at 11:17 am

Hi Jack,

Those 24k hits from SE refer to the 5 December - 19 May timeframe. Now, I get around 11k per month. The number of indexed pages doesn’t matter that much. I have only 20-30 pages in Google index.

Yuriy Zaremba May 27, 2011 at 10:57 am

It’s interesting that we’re moving from quantity of content (article marketing) to community driven interaction in blog promotion. Although the Panda update upset alot of people, I think It’s ultimately great that It’s becoming a more social experience.

Ana May 27, 2011 at 11:59 am

Yes, blogging has certainly become more social. The community aspect is huge right now and I think it is great, too.

steve micheals May 27, 2011 at 4:07 am

Real great ideas for increasing your traffic in a short interval of time.
I think relevancy of the content is very important than any other factor.
Even anchor text is essential although it looks very simple.
So as usual a great post.

Ana May 27, 2011 at 5:08 am

Yes, relevancy is very important. Thanks for visiting, Steve.

Riya May 27, 2011 at 3:37 am

Hi Cristian,

Wonderful tips especially using the guest post to get reference from the highly reputed blog so that your blog can get good authority in blogging world.

Cristian May 27, 2011 at 4:00 am

Thanks Riya.

Richard May 26, 2011 at 9:39 pm

Article marketing works fairly well as does blog commenting. However, I believe article marketing took a hit with the Google Panda update. Nonetheless, I like it because the articles have a lot of longevity, so the links are there for as long as the article directory is up and running.

Cristian May 26, 2011 at 10:03 pm

Hey Richard,

I am still seeing nice results with article marketing, even after the Google update.

Bruce May 26, 2011 at 6:40 pm

All the experts keep telling me guest posting exactly as you described is the way to go, especially for long term, sold back links, however I’ve found it is not easy, especially when back linking to a product review page as I want to.

In fact on my first attempt I struck out 5 for 5! Handpicked the sites, got permission, wrote what I thought was a decent post, and either never heard from them, got accused of spamming for my site, to your being told my post was “unsuitable”.

Kind of takes the wind out of your sales….

~ Bruce

Cristian May 28, 2011 at 10:51 am

I don’t think that linking back to product review pages is not a good idea when you are guest posting. Learn from your mistakes, improve your skills and try again. 5 shoots is not that much.

Thomas@IT-Blog May 26, 2011 at 1:09 pm

Hi Christian
I can see that I will have to start guest posting sometime soon. I could use more traffic and guest posting might be the right thing for me. Just have to find a very good subject and the right blog to post it on. Thank you for all the tips.

Cristian May 26, 2011 at 8:48 pm

Thanks for the reply Thomas. Guest posting should be on top of your “to do” list

Ian Belanger@Network Marketing Success May 26, 2011 at 7:33 am

Hi Cristian,

Great tips and congrats on your strategy working.

I am currently working on a new strategy myself. Right now I am in the beginning stages of planning how to go about it and your post will be bookmarked for further reference.

I think it all boils down to keyword research and if you do it correctly. You can build thousands of backlinks to your site, but if you don’t have the right keywords as alt text, you are really wasting your time.

You could also have good keywords, but that are not “buying keywords” and this would result in traffic, with low conversions. So I guess what I am trying to say is “Learn Keyword Research First”. Then you can build your backlinks.

Thanks for sharing Cristian and have a great day!

Cristian May 26, 2011 at 9:20 am

You are welcomed. As I said, keyword research is very important.

Rison Simon May 26, 2011 at 7:04 am

Wonderful tips. The use of guest posting is one of the most talked about subject today. I have always refrained from article marketing since it is too much work and since Google Panda update, article directories are no use for traffic. And it is great to hear that your backlinking strategy worked. Congratulations.

Cristian May 26, 2011 at 7:16 am

Thanks Simon. Guest posting is indeed the hot topic nowadays. However, for blogs in smaller niches, article marketing works great.
