Ana

Thank you for your thorough overview. Whilst some of it still baffles me, I got the gist! I just logged into my new(ish) working mums wordpress site and there was an advert about commentluv premium. I clicked through and watched the video, but remembered having see an email from you about it. Even though I hadn’t read it at the time, I came to your site and have just bought CL Premium through your link here. There’s reciprocity, social proof and general reader loyalty in action I guess. Thanks again for all your advice.

I don’t understand everything about how comment luv works. I read your whole article but I’m new to the idea of wanting comments on my blog, as a result of getting a lot of spam and thinking I would loose power from links to other websites on my blog. What exactly is the google +1 show 10 posts? Who’s posts are they?
Thanks for all of your helpful information including the Big G PDF. I hope that makes sense.

Reply

Ana Hoffman October 25, 2011 at 4:53 am

Everyone gets spam, but by writing good content, you will receive valid comments too. It shows that people value what you write and they will share and buy whatever you sell.

Google+1 is like Facebook’s like button. Please use my site’s search function to learn more about it.

The 10 posts are related to CommentLuv and they are your posts. I have written many posts on this too, explaining exactly how it works. Please again search for those posts.

I hope this helps.

Reply

Thomas October 8, 2011 at 2:10 pm

Good rundown on the plugin, Ana. This may not apply to your particular blog, or perhaps doesn’t apply to it now, but have you found that having commentluv brings other commentluvers in? In other words, does your site get discovered by others who are also using commentluv or is this something you had to facilitate — and then the other commentluvers started to come in? I hope I’m being coherent in presenting the question. Thanks.

Reply

Ana Hoffman October 9, 2011 at 11:22 am

You are coherent, Thomas and yes, that’s one of the many ways in which it works very well.

First, GREAT review/commentary. I agree 100%. Second, I LOVE CommentLuv Premium. It’s possibly the best investment I’ve made on my blog. It’s amazing, though, how some are so resistant (and even hostile) to “having to pay” for a plug-in. Sure, I’d like everything to be free…but guess what comes with free? TONS of spam, lack of SEO/linkbuilding/engagement. Hey, to each his own, but I know what’s better for me.

I am currently using Livefyre on my site and have noticed a substantial drop in comments but it has decreased my spam also quite a great deal. I am mulling whether to go back to commentluv or not. I felt really comfortable using that system. Another reason I started using Livefyre was because with commentluv I had to install a series of plugins like gasp,do follow, keyword luv, etc. etc, just to take advantage of all that it had to offer. I must admit I miss it a great deal. One thing I have noticed about livefyre is that it will pull comments from my facebook page and twitter on any link that I post from my blog. I’m torn about which way to go. ::sighs:: I really miss commentluv though even if I have to pay for it. =)

You can still check out the comments to avoid non-sense spam.

I’m going to switch to GASP. Easier to install since I don’t have to secure an API as I would have to do with Akismet.

Also, awesome features on the premium version. Like Ray though, I don’t have a scheduled post that would fit. I may find time to work on it as there’s still time before the launch.

Best of luck to everyone who has already entered and thank you Ana for the offer.

I have just installed the plugin last week and it works amazingly! But I think it’s not the Premium one since it was for free. I haven’t heard of GASP until now. I have been using Akismet to all of our WP generated blogs and it seems to work fine. How better is it compared to Akismet?

Reply

Ana Hoffman September 21, 2011 at 8:13 pm

Here’s how it’s better, Glen - if I comment on your blog today, chances are Akismet will send my comment into spam or worse yet won’t ever show it in any of your folders. So you’ll never know I commented and I won’t come back because you never published my comment.

And this happens a lot with Akismet.

CommentLuv Premium hasn’t been released yet; it’s coming out next week. I’ll have something special for my blog readers on Monday - come check it out.

Reply

Glen September 22, 2011 at 12:24 am

Yay. I didn’t know Akismet would be that lame. I’ve been using it on our Wordpress Blogs as it was quite popular (and it’s recommended).

CommentLuv Premium — I’ll surely come back on Monday. Cheers!

Hi Ana,

I’ve been using comment luv for about a year and no matter the cost I’m not about to stop. I think if I heard right it’s going to be a 20 usd plugin now? I think that’s a reasonable price to pay. I can’t wait for it to be released I’m sure my members will love that fact that I have it.

Hey Ana,

Excellent explanation of the new CommentLuv Premium Plugin. As you know, I have been using the free version on my blog pretty much ever since I started it, last November. And I know my blog would not be where it is today if I hadn’t been using CommentLuv. Andy Bailey is the man, in my opinion his plugins are some of the best out there.

I applied to be a beta tester for premium, but unfortunately wasn’t one of the lucky few who he chose. Anyway, I love that Andy packaged all of his best plugins into one. GASP has been such a help on my blog, I can’t see why anyone wouldn’t use it.

I am definitely going to enter your contest, as I really want CommentLuv Premium. If I don’t win, I am still going to buy it, no matter the price. It will be worth it!

I will come back and leave a comment once I write my next post with the required text.

Thanks Ana for this contest, personally I think this is a better prize than the thesis giveaway and I love Thesis.

Maybe need to mention that in the beta tester forum. Also I see Andy has added the Twitter ID function, I hope he adds my suggestion in the forum too. I will of course add the link back in my next post, but don’t enter me in the comp as I already have it!

LOL! Now that’s what I’m talkin’ about…a feature bio-box…;)

I too had to dump Akismet, Ana. I believe what happens is that legit comments get flagged by bloggers and once that IP is flagged on the Akismet servers, they just get thrown in the SPAM folder where ever they comment on an Akismet-enabled blog.

Just curious, how long did it take for your traffic levels to rise due to linking out in your comments? I love to get data like this…:)

Mark

That’s exactly what happened to me, Mark - someone must’ve not liked what I said on their blog and flagged me as a spammer and now I can’t comment on any Akismet-enabled blog. Their loss? LOL

You have to clarify what you mean by “linking out in your comments” for me to answer your question.

Reply

Mark September 18, 2011 at 8:47 am

Wow. If they are not allowing YOU to comment on their blogs Ana, then that is indeed their loss.

Additionally, by the term “linking out in your comments”, I was simply referring to using the CommentLuv or KeywordLuv plugins which link out automatically…

Just curious as to how it affected your traffic…:)

I am curious about the anti SPAM filters.

I have been using mollom.com for some time now and don’t get any spam. However I do not know if I am missing any legitimate comments either

How do you manage this?

Reply

Ana Hoffman September 14, 2011 at 8:46 pm

Never heard of the service, Tim, so can’t tell you how credible it is.

With Akismet for instance, the way you know you are missing out on legitimate comments is by finding those comments sitting in your spam folder.

Do you have any comments getting into your spam folder or is it clean?

See the problem I had with Akismet was that in the sea of all automated spam they were catching, there were plenty of legit comments going into spam as well, but with hundreds of spam comments to comb through, finding the good ones took away too much time.

As a result, I was loosing blog commentators who wanted to contribute, yet their comments simply never showed up.

With GASP, all those problems are gone.

Wordpress by default is a nofollow platform, Jim.

So in order to turn your blog into a dofollow one, you just need to install a plugin that’s called “dofollow” (it’s in your WP plugin directory), and that will turn your blog into dofollow.
