‘Lo, Ana! As usual, an informative and very useful post. You’re raisin’ the bar for the rest of us, m’dear! As luck would have it, I’ve been noticing a rise in trackbacks the last week, so I’ve been monitoring them closely. However, I haven’t yet gotten around to checking out the source sites. I’m betting that I’ll find the majority of them are spam. I’ve been a strong advocate of Akismet, because it’s caught a lot of spam before it could clutter up my blog. But it appears to do absolutely nothing about trackbacks. So I’ve dropped Akismet in favor of GASP and STBV. I’ll watch it for a few days, but if Justin recommends it, I’m sure it’s solid. Thanks for the heads up!

Good info, as usual, Ana! A few months back, a good friend turned me on to FriendFeed, and that is always my first bookmark, immediately after posting anything. I’ve tested with Google alerts for unique words in a post, and have seen alerts hit my inbox in as little as eight minutes after bookmarking to FriendFeed!I also share your enthusiasm for SERPd. Great crew over there, and I think they’ll be growing a LOT!

  • Mistery of Google PageRank Solved?
Hi, Ana- Great post, as usual!I’d like to clear up a couple of misconceptions that some seem to have about pagerank (and toolbar pagerank, which is different, as I’ll explain).First of all, pagerank is presently one of the most important single ranking factors in Google’s algorithm. It is computed by considering the quantity and quality of inbound links (also referred to as backlinks). The only way that age enters into that equation is in the age of the link. A link that was put up last week will have less value than that same link put up two years ago. However, that same link put up seven years ago would probably have less power than had it been put up two years ago. I say “probably” because nobody outside of Google really “knows” for sure.To repeat: quantity and quality of inbound links, and NOTHING ELSE, determine a page’s pagerank. Some SEOs perform extensive testing to try to figure out what Google thinks and does, and some of the trends they identify seem to be valid. But at the end of the day, it’s really all just educated guesswork. In response to Jason’s comment, a site’s age may matter in ranking, but NOT in pagerank. My second point is to clarify the difference between pagerank and toolbar pagerank (most of us in the industry refer to it as “foolsbar” pagerank).Pagerank (“actual PR, if you will) is computed many times each day… constantly… and that is what is used by Google for ranking our position in the SERPs (search engine results pages). Periodically, Google will issue an “update”, releasing to the public a snapshot of the PR at some point in time in the past. That update is what you see on the foolbar.Typically, that has meant that when an update was released, we were suddenly seeing what the pagerank WAS, not IS, at some day gone by. I’ve heard it said by some that the data was two to three months old when made public.I disagree with that, for the same reason that you should, Ana. You and I started our blogs at about the same time. I noticed that my blog had climbed up to a smashing 0/10 about two weeks after I first went online. You’re also at 0/10, and I suspect you rose to that level (from “unranked”) just about a month and a half ago, as I did. That seems to coincide with a recent update, but it obviously isn’t two or three month old data. However, it WILL BE two or three months old by the time the next update is released. At this point in time, your blog’s actual PR may be a PR0, PR3, PR5… who knows? And by the time I finish typing this comment, it may change. But the foolbar PR will still show it as 0/10.I hope that clears it up somewhat. I just hate to see people thinking that what they see on the toolbar PR indicator means something in the present. It’s just a snapshot from the past.BTW, it wouldn’t surprise me in the least to see Traffic Generation Cafe jump to a PR3 or 4 with the next update. You’ve been doing a fantastic job at maintaining top quality content and marketing your blog. Keep it up!
  • Need For Site Speed: Practical Guide For The Average Blogger
Hi, Ana-Great tips! I’m ashamed to say that my siteload was 5.3 seconds, which I consider atrocious! Apparently, I fell into the “ooh…that’s shiny” trap, and had far too many plugins activated. I’ve murdered a few of them, thanks to your reminder. I’ll have to wait to see what my new “official” loadtime is, but I can tell it’s much better already… around half. Thanks!
  • Promote Yourself: More About You & Your Business
Well, as promised (threatened?), I’m back. Got the site up and running, though the blog is still a little light on content. WordPress is a dream! My host doesn’t use Fantastico, so I ended up doing it manually. Like TrafficGeneratorCafe, it is NoFollow Free! Nothing but link juice and hackneyed opinions flowing over there. I was so impressed with this place, that I copied several of your plug-ins, especially the Wibiya bar! So any and all, please stop by, comment, enjoy, participate, wallow in the wonderfulness…whatever. Even have a forum over there, if you feel like spouting, ranting or bragging. Now that I have my shameless self-promotion out of the way…Ya got a great place here, Ana!

Hi Ana,
I am still figuring out which trackbacks are good. The picture of the Trackback plugin, says with Topsy blocker. Are Topsy trackbacks spam? Thanks

Hi, Hunter - nothing wrong with Topsy per se.

However, you end up linking your blog to all kinds of Twitter accounts; might not be the best decision.

Personal choice.

Nice to hear from you again. I’m glad you are now using GASP and STBV. I am confident that it will work well, better than Akismet.

Thanks for stopping by,

Great find again Ana, I too noticed a lot of fake trackbacks on other blogs!

I actually found a website which sells a wp plugin that does this exact thing(I mean sending false trackbacks).
Oh well I think as anti-spam plugins get better spammer tools get better too.

Hope your day is going well so far.

YaY! Another super useful plugin for me to add to my collection:)!

I’ve actually noticed a small increase in the amount of spammy trackbacks these last few weeks, so this plugin may be just want I need. Because if I see another one of those tricky credit repair people and their friends linking to another one of my posts again - it’s not gonna’ be pretty lol.

In any case, I just installed it now.
Thanks so much for bringing this little trackback spam annihilator to my attention :) .

Hmmm I started reading your post and as an early adopter of GASP did not see an increase in trackback spam so there I was wondering why this is so, only to discover that I have been using the Simple Trackback Validation plugin anyway. Well at least I can support Justin’s findings. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Hi Ana,

I’m quite lost with those trackbacks. LOL! I had no idea what their purpose was until stumbling upon that post. So overall it is a great thing and not so great, because of the abuse, you mentioned. Spammers are without doubt the worst thing that can happen to a blog and unfortunately if they want - they often find ways to ruin everything. Whether it be through the comments or those trackbacks, you have whole lot more work to do because of them. Some nice resources you have mentioned. Will see if the following plug-ins are compatible with my blog.

Hey Ana

Another technique spammers use is automated blogs with automated linking to other blogs based on certain criteria. The plugin they use is very similar to the “Related Posts” plugin except it looks for related posts on other blogs.
