Are You Building a Machine or Just Another Job?

by · 58 comments

Today, I want to share with you a real life success story from director of Stomper Commerce, Todd Chism, is a living, breathing example of the power of Internet Marketing.

He grew his multi-million dollar company from the ground up with just enough ingenuity and a lot of common sense, so that now, five years later, he’s the architect of wildly successful movement!

As you’ll see in this guest article, Todd’s success can be YOUR success. You just need to stop and ask yourself the right questions!

Are You Building a Machine or Just Another Job?
By Todd Chism

Welcome to the beginning of your new life! The one you determine! The life that, as of this moment, can either transform you into a well-rounded life-living entrepreneur, or a stressed out basket case job owner that works over 80 hours a week merely to keep paying his newly found business debt.

Starting a business from the ground up can be a terrifying, joyful, frustrating, maddening, sleepless process. But, when it’s done with the right foresight, planning, and drive, all of the headaches, stress, and countless other emotions will pay off in more ways that you can imagine.

It’s about becoming different than the 99.9% of the human population who can’t stray from the stranglehold of the corporate world and the “so called” security of a job!

A successful entrepreneur once told me that when you start a company, there are two ways to look at it: you’re either starting a lifelong job for yourself to slave away, OR you’re creating a money-making business machine that changes your life forever.

The bottom line is this:

If you have to go in to the office everyday because the system will fall apart without YOU being in the middle of it, then it’s nothing but a job that you are solely responsible for.

However, if you can walk away for months at a time and come back with everything running like clockwork “and growing,” then it’s a real, viable money-making business machine that can take you to new heights and set you apart from the rest of the world.

It’s about the freedom to live the life you always wanted to, the freedom to work when you want, how you want, and with whom you want. It’s about securing your livelihood and future without being a slave to the money-machine (or pit) that you are trying to build!

It’s about attaining the entrepreneurial dream that most will never attain.

If what I just said hit home even a little, then you, my friend, need to get out of the middle of your self-imposed job you’ve created, and start building a machine that can inevitably change not only your life, but also those around you.

I’ve never forgotten this basic concept, because it’s actually a flawless analogy that has changed my life, as well as my family’s. When you think about your business, you should see a bright future where you’re free of financial burdens and the daily rituals and tasks that tie you to your office.

You should see an exciting place where you drive the ideas, and focus on the big picture items, while the machine transforms your thoughts into action, thereby creating a wealth-building, moneymaking machine that won’t stop!

Now, right at this moment, you might be thinking,

“Come on now Todd… This is real freaking life! I’m just trying to add some products to my site, and find a few more splog links to help me rank! After that, I need to create some more content for my site, and start redesigning my home page. Then figure out how to start testing, and then work on my PPC campaign. Oh, yeah, I also have to go through invoices, and do payables and receivables, and of course my quarterly tax bill is still pending.”

Or how about,

“I just don’t have the money to hire anyone, so I have to do it myself right now, and beside’s, I certainly wouldn’t want to share my business niche with anyone, or they might steal the idea and do it themselves!”

And last but not least,

“I also must find time to open and watch the five different videos I received today on email from various info-pedaling Gurus that say, ‘DON’T WAIT, YOU MUST OPEN TODAY,’ or you’ll miss the FREE bonus material that will change your life!”

Yeah, folks…I get it!

In fact, that was me four years ago. Eighty hour plus workweeks, stressed to the core, working at 2AM wondering how the hell I was going to get all tasks done that week. Because after all, I had just built a business, and my family’s wellbeing was dependant on me getting everything done. I was ingrained in every aspect of my ahem… “newly created job” and I had to be involved in every part of it.

Let’s face it: I was the one who started it, and no one could do what I was doing, because I spent countless hours watching videos and learning SEO & internet marketing… And of course, there is no way in hell that anyone would care about this business and do it as well as me! I was afraid to share my business model with anyone.

Well folks… If this message is hitting home, and you can identify with even a few of these things, and you think YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN RUN YOUR BUSINESS, or can complete certain tasks in your business, then here is a dose of reality… YOU ARE WRONG! I’ll say it again… YOU ARE WRONG! And you need to change your mindset and develop a new strategy to build your moneymaking machine!

Because if you don’t, then you will never get to that next level!

You’ll never enjoy total entrepreneurial freedom and wealth. It is absolutely impossible!

Until YOU change YOUR mindset and find a way to “start replacing every aspect of what you do in your business,” then you are destined to work in the middle of your newly created job until the day you die… Or give up and go back to work for someone else!

Sorry, folks… You might not like what I just said, or even agree (right now) with what me, but the fact is 99.9 percent of business owners are in the middle of their newly created jobs and have no strategy, plan, or idea how to get themselves out of the situation they just created.

If these words are ringing in your head, and you are saying to yourself,

“Holy crap, how does Todd know what I was thinking? How does he know about the pressure on my life because of this business, and the financial burdens? How does he know what I am doing to build this thing? How does…”

I know because every business owner and job creator I have ever spoken to throughout my 25 years have all said the same exact thing. They are all stuck in the same rut working in the middle of their businesses with no end in site! All except, that is, for the really successful ones who are actually living the dream!

So, change your Mindset at this moment and say…

  • I will replace every aspect of myself in my business!
  • I will start today!
  • I will start by finding one little area of my duties and tasks and figure out how to get it done without getting in the middle of it!

Are you actively building a machine, or just another job?

Committmemnt and dedication to what you are doing is for sure a basic necessity for any “own business”. Apart from that different types of business do take different routes on the internet. For us in network marketing building relatinships is one of the key factors. The second key factor is that whatever someone does needs to be done i a way th at others can duplicate. Without duplication network marketing will not grow and will not become a business most people now only dream of.

Duplication is definitely important in any network marketing business, Frieke. However, it’s also important for your downline to know that it’s their business and you are not ultimately responsible for their success.

Frieke Karlovits September 26, 2010 at 10:23 pm

Ana - duplication doesn’t implyl that you do it for them it only implies that there is a system in place that everybody is capable of using or that you are doing things yourself which everybody is able to do as well. Both things are not what is done in general and it is one of the reasons why so many people are struggling and trying to find answers.

I see your point, Frieke.

I still think that you can teach your team only that much and at some point they have to stand out from the crowd and you can’t do that by duplicating somebody’s efforts.

Reply

Frieke Karlovits September 27, 2010 at 1:09 am

Ana duplication is not just emulating another person - a system needs to be a system in the real sense of the work - kind of hardware tool too that contains all the required features and once people have learned how to handle that there is the person to person training on top of it. It is a neat and very effective combination as long as the “hardware system” is not an affilitate things which keeps newbies distracted from what they actually need to do to get their business going. I firmly believe that a tool needs to be a tool only no more to keep people focused :)

Hi Ana,

Well I am building a machine with my current projects. Right now I am doing most of the work, treating it like a job, but my plan is to eventually replace myself, and it will not be a job anymore for me.

It’s a slow step process, and the foundation needs to be well thought of and acted upon properly right from the start.

Many many yrs ago, when I started in IM, I had no set goals, no plans or a strategy, and was just going after the money constantly jumping from one thing to the next. 2 yrs of wasted time and efforts. That was 11 yrs ago.

My mindset has been a lot more focused since the last 3 yrs and that is when daily earnings started happening. The slap I got in November 2009 did take me back a bit, but I am more focused than ever now to replace myself eventually than treat IM like just a 2nd job. Forex too is another area I have been exploring a lot and again plan to replace myself at some point than watch currency charts daily.

But having said all of that, you also need some luck going your way.

Thanks for this great article.

I definitely agree with you about building a solid foundation first before trusting your business into somebody’s hands, even if it’s a small part of it.

However, it does need to be done eventually.

I look forward to getting there with my business.

These are some great points Ana, I have tried to replace myself in certain aspects of my business but I have found it’s hard. No one will put into my business what I will. I agree completely with exactly what you are saying. I also feel some hats I wear cannot be passed onto someone else.

I found a catch 22 here.

hi todd, your article really resonates with me. It’s like hitting a home run. For me it’s really tiring trying to keep up when things change so fast and there’s so much resources online I want to know. Outsourcing is definitely the way to go for me otherwise it would be difficult to go to the next level.

Hi Ana and Todd,

I completely agree. I recently wrote a post about outsourcing.

When I first started my online business, I wanted to do everything myself. I wanted to be involved in everything.

With time, I realised that it was just impossible for me to do everything. I had so much to do.

I discovered that the industry leaders were outsourcing and that I needed to do the same if I wanted to grow my business and become successful too.

Great lessons to be learned here. Thanks for sharing this.

All the best,

Wondeful article on the power of internet/relationship/network marketing. Thanks for sharing it! I totally agree that when we start building our busines we must “see an exciting place where you drive the ideas, and focus on the big picture items, while the machine transforms your thoughts into action, thereby creating a wealth-building, moneymaking machine that won’t stop!” That way we ensure we are not going to be burned out at the end and actually enjoying our life to the fullest, as we create wealth and don’t have to worry about any bills, or losing our house, or going bankrupt, ever again.

This is a great read! Todd certainly makes us smell the coffee - one just has to start brewing it.

The main problem with internet marketing is that most people are leaving their rat race with a dream of freedom, just to finally find themselves caught in another (worse) rat race that completely absorbs them physically, emotionally and mentally. I see a great pitfall in all the overabundance of activity oriented product information that absorbs your time and just shows you some more stones you have to move.

As Todd states, you really have to find the lever (or invent the machine) to move the stones. Unfortunately most people (especially starting out fresh in IM) are pitched, hunted and haunted to buy informational products and then to start selling in order to make up for their expenditure. Naturally they start pitching ‘their opportunity’, instead of giving some thought to the how of building a stone moving machine. Such misdirected replication finally renders the IM scene the loud place it now is, where everyone pitches and nobody listens.

It takes some thought and elbow grease to figure out, build and start the machine, but it is a worthwhile investment. Instead of falling for the pitching business, it is better to spend some time thinking about HOW to bring the dream of freedom alive. I find, observing successful people to be a good tactic to learn the “how”. Focusing and only buying information or products that ultimately serve my purpose and wearing my bullshit deflectors to not fall for all the hype, is my second tactic.

So Todd - I’ll be watching you… (yes Ana, you are already on my watchlist)

“Wearing my bullshit deflectors to not fall for all the hype” - sounds like a great title for a future blog post! :)

Love your points, Michel.

Unfortunately, we become so overwhelmed with what everybody else tells us “we must do” to be successful, we never just sit down and let our own ideas float. We never focus on “how to make it better”, because we are too focused on how to “keep up”.

Todd did inspire me to change my business around and that’s what I am doing TODAY!

Love hearing from you, Michel.

This is definitely business 101 - and I mean that in a “that’s solid information” way not “been there, done that, flipping the channel.”

It’s interesting for two reasons:

1) I’m paying out about as much a month as a StomperNet membership for backlinking services and article distribution networks (though more often than not it’s for client work). And I’m highly interested in Todd’s StomperNet network…go figure.

2) I am in no kind of position to replace myself at this stage! So it was a good read, solid info, and an impossible dream at this juncture. But thanks for sharing it - it does bring more hope and “light at the end of the tunnel” than not.

You always make me think, James. :)

1. As far as StomperNet goes - I am sure you’ve read the kind of services they include in their membership, right? (Market Samurai is one of them, by the way:) If you figure out the amount of money you spend on various tools (just UAW is about $67/month, right?), it might add up to that and some.

That’s what happened to me when I was considering the membership. It was less expensive!

2. Would you be willing to spend say $100 per month to make an extra thousand? I am!

You can hire a part-time employee for that to do all your grunt work and free yourself up to do things that actually make money.

Your business simply cannot grow if you do it all yourself.

Thoughts?

Reply

JamestheJust September 23, 2010 at 7:54 pm

Ana -

1) Yes - the difference in my case is that my tools are now paying for themselves, so I’m not paying the price out per month that’s on the sticker. This happens in two ways: 1 is selling the service of using them for my clients, 2 is actually selling everything I use as an affiliate. I’m just now at the break even.

But you’re right - only: StomperNet’s $197 a month. Last I checked, anyway, unless they’re running a deal of some sort?

2) The sticking point is this: from hiring out my writing to others for my content, I’ve found that not many can actually write very well. That is, the results I’ve received are less than admirable, so I quit looking.

Currently the content I need requires someone who knows marketing, knows the art of closing with copy writing - and I’ve found precious few skilled or who care enough to try to make that happen.

Therefore, I’ve done my own writing at this point and have discovered ways of doing competitive analysis such that I require little but one article to sufficiently backlink myself into top rankings.

It’s just a matter of getting to the point where my passive outshines my active income, and when that happens there are other things I can outsource.

At the present moment, this is all just a luxury item for me: I personally cannot afford to outsource (literally). I understand the benefit of doing so - and Todd’s right (his advice isn’t unique to this post, it’s just common sense).

But like I was hinting at earlier - I can’t right now, I just need to keep doing what works until I’ve reached a threshold and can quit freelancing, although that’s what’s been (sorta) paying the bills at this point.

I know what you mean about hiring writers; I’ve tried it in the past as well, but got crappy unfinished work at best.

In my case, I would never outsource writing, but things like social networking, bookmarking, commenting on other blog for link building purposes, etc. The grunt work that right now takes a good chunk of my day.

I am in the process of looking into it right now; will let you know if it’s worth it.

Hi Todd,

amazing article. People start building themselves a business and wind up having a busy-ness and think it’s normal. They have a busy-ness and are nevertheless lazy because they refuse to acquire the mindset you describe here and pinpoint in your last paragraph. What you describe in your last paragraph is good laziness because it helps us to remove ourselves from the equation, step by step. Then we wind up having a true money-generating business whether we work or not. Thanks for sharing your insights.

Take care

I am a doer and not a talker, and my to-do list for today says “OUTSOURCE”.

Glad to see you on my blog, as always.

Ana,
I can really agree with what Todd says about replacing yourself in your business. That is pretty much what the top earners in our company tell us. If you think you have to run everything in the network marketing scenario, you’l either pretty much fail, or go nuts trying. My goals are probably not the same as Todd’s, and my family isn’t dependent on my success in network marketing, but I still plan to succeed in redeeming the time.

Good point, Lou.

If you can afford to invest some time into your business especially at the beginning, why not?

I am at a point of my business where Todd’s article hit home. I HAVE TO replace myself in my business or I will never grow.

Thanks for the comment!

I’ve been thinking about this lately. I definitely don’t want another ‘job’ and have been looking at what things can be outsourced. Right now I’m neck-deep in product creation which does need to be done by me (and I love it!), but I need to put some serious thought into how to structure things going forward.

It’s a necessity, not a luxury - that’s what I think about it.

If it costs me a little bit of money to make a lot of money, then what am I waiting for? :)

Let me know how it goes, Jean.
