Authority ROI: How to Create Authority Sites that Make Money

Last Updated on March 21, 2017 53 Comments

It seems like all you are hearing about right now is AuthorityROI, right?

That’s what I call “incredible marketing” - I need to learn me some of that…

And what is Authority ROI, you might ask yourself?

On the surface, Authority ROI sounds like another blogging course.

And I, for one, am very happy that it isn’t.

Authority ROI: The Premise

Imagine someone with

  • years of experience in online marketing,
  • a sizable support team,
  • and some money to burn

…starting a few blogs in different niches.

The goal: position those blogs as authority properties and make money as a result.

Now, take away

  • years of experience in online marketing,
  • a sizable support team,
  • and some money to burn

…and you’ve got an average person who’s starting a blog as a base for their future online business.

You’ve got YOU and I.

So what happens when a person with all those perceived advantages fails?

Where does it leave the rest of us?

That’s what is in the heart of Ryan Deiss’ new training - AuthorityROI.

Some time ago, he was the one with

  • years of experience in online marketing,
  • a sizable support team,
  • and some money to burn,

… and yet failed at building profitable businesses.

But you know what?

I am so glad that Ryan is the one with

  • years of experience in online marketing,
  • a sizable support team,
  • and some money to burn

…because he’s known for putting his

  • years of experience in online marketing,
  • a sizable support team,
  • and some money to burn

…to GREAT use - testing, tweaking, turning things on their heads if need be, and figuring out how to make it work.

Who’s Behind Authority ROI?

I’ve been following Ryan Deiss since I started Traffic Generation Cafe.

As a matter of fact, I’d like to give him a lot of credit for turning this very blog into what you see now - an authority blog on all things traffic generation.

About a month after I started Traffic Generation Cafe, I bought my very first online training and it happened to be Ryan Deiss’ Perpetual Traffic Formula.

It was a $2K course that worth was every penny of it.

That was why, after just 2 months of blogging at Traffic Generation Cafe, my blog looked like an established authority:

authority roi yields authority

I’ve been Ryan’s fan ever since and bought almost every course he ever produced.

And yes, I am also a member of his Digital Marketer community and I constantly apply what I am learning from Ryan to what you see here, at Traffic Generation Cafe.

Becoming an online authority always has its drawbacks.

I’ve been learning that here and there, but Ryan definitely knows what it feels like to be in the spotlight and to have all your work put under scrutiny by people who remind me of food critics: they produce NOTHING, yet criticize everything.

Good thing you and I have brains of our own to test things and then come to educated conclusions about products, services, sites, and people.

I’ve tested Ryan Deiss again and again.

And so far, I’ve never been disappointed.

That’s why I am personally very excited to take a closer look at AuthorityROI.

The Insider Look at Authority ROI Back Office

Authority ROI is now open.

I had to have been their first member; I wonder if there’s a prize for that…

Take a peak over my shoulder as I take my first steps through Authority ROI training:

Authority ROI - What Is It?

As I was following Authority ROI prelaunch videos, I had a bit of a hard time answering this very important question: what the heck is Authority ROI about and who is it for?

Sometimes it’s hard to see the forest behind the trees, isn’t it?

Well, now that I had a chance to take a look at the training, I think I can finally answer that question.

What is Authority ROI?

It’s not a blogging course.

It’s not a niche marketing course (which was my second guess).

Authority ROI will turn you, yes YOU, into a media company.

Let me put it this way: if you were born 20 or 30 years ago, you might’ve started a magazine or industry newsletter.

And that’s a good thing, because Authority ROI model is soooo much easier and SOOOOOOO much more profitable.

You get to become an authority in a sustainable market by using other people’s existing authority.

Who is Authority ROI for?

orange-checkIf you want to branch out and build authority sites in another niche/several other niches.

orange-checkIf you have an existing site that is just not going anywhere, but you know you could make it work if someone showed you how.

orange-checkIf you’ve been wanting to get into niche marketing, but it all sounded too complicated and time-consuming.

I personally fall into this category.

Niche marketing always sounded like fun, but researching profitable niches? building new sites? writing even more content?

Needless to say, I put this idea on the back burner.

However now, it’s on the forefront of my mind.

Ryan made it sound not easy mind you, but doable.

orange-checkIf you want to learn how to leverage your current site better, i.e. how to stop pouring sweat, blood, and tears into it, and learn how to work ON your business and not IN it.

Authority ROI might not be for you, if…

orange-check…if you have an existing authority site like Traffic Generation Café and are happy with where you are at with it.

You’ll still be able to get a lot practical knowledge out of the course to take back to your blog to tweak and improve it, but I wouldn’t buy Authority ROI for that.

orange-check…if you expect to find some hundreds of hours worth of training in Authority ROI.

After all, the more training, the more valuable that training is, right?

Authority ROI is very concise, precise, and to the point.

If you can simplify a complex idea in 2 paragraphs vs 10, the folks at Authority ROI will do that.

No fluff to “beef up the content” there.

Authority ROI Training

Module 1: Gut Check

orange-checkFinding sustainable markets for your authority sites - without it, you’ll just be rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.

However, intense data mining isn’t necessarily the best place to start either.

Ryan will explain some very simple ways to determine if your site idea holds water. Following his guidelines, I could probably say Yay or Nay to any specific idea within minutes.

If you are stuck for ideas, Ryan has resources to help you get going.

Module 2: Establishing your Brand

orange-checkLearn to distinguish between your “market” and your “topic”.

Your market is about the “who, and your topic is about the “what”.

Your topic can shift overtime, but your market is your business constant.

orange-checkInteresting discussion on selecting Personal, Corporate, or Product-Centric brand.

Which one yields more rapid growth? Which one is the most limiting?

orange-checkEstablishing personality and brand voice: this is something I see many bloggers fail at.

Distinguishing themselves from their competition.

Is your brand going to be serious or snarky? Is the glass half empty or half full? Will your language be formal or friendly?

Ryan has an awesome way to find the right voice that matches your personality and your market; wish I would’ve thought about it!

orange-checkMore: choosing the right domain name, creating your elevator pitch, etc.

Module 3: Building your authority site

Module 3 transitions us from the foundation work to the hands-on part, where we get to actually pour our grand ideas into our future authority site.

But to ensure that you don’t skip the steps above (remember, we want to avoid rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic), Modules 3 through 6 will become available at a later date.

Here’s what you’ll learn from Module 3:

  • Everything about setting up a WordPress site, the plugins and themes to use, what pages you HAVE TO have for SEO purposes and to comply with FTC disclosure guidelines, setting up the best silo structure to get the best SEO results, etc.

Plus:

  • Trademark Your Site Name
  • Get a Google Places Listing
  • Prime The Pump With “Core Concept” and Filler Posts
  • Prime the Pump With Bad Ads From Big Companies
  • Setup Branded Social Properties
  • Integrate Social Properties Into Your Authority Site

Module 4: Establishing your content strategy

The lessons in Module 4 include:

  • Determine Your Posting Schedule
  • Determine Your Mailing Schedule (Editorial Calendar)
  • Brainstorm Possible Writers
  • Use Your Competition
  • Do All The Google Author Rank stuff…
  • Contact 20 Writers From Section 3
  • Add A “Write for Us” Page On Your Site
  • Post A Job Listing At Problogger.com
  • Post A Listing On Guest Blogging Sites:
  • Install the Postrunner WP plugin
  • Become A Curator Of Content
  • Regularly Go Back and Interlink Old Blog Posts
  • Make Active “Commentors” Famous

Module 5: Monetizing your authority

Monetizing my authority with Traffic Generation Café is a major sore point for me, so I am really looking forward to diving into this module.

Here’s what we’ll learn:

  • Convert Visitors into Subscribers
  • Lead Magnets
  • Sidebar Forms
  • Landing Pages
  • In-Post Opt-Ins
  • Create Two-Step Opt-In Forms
  • Sell Advertising
  • Hold a Webinar
  • Add a Premium Subscription Level
  • Virtuous Cycle

Module 6: Scaling your media empire

The lessons in Module 6 include:

  • Know Your Numbers
  • Monitor Your Rankings
  • Increase From 3 - 5 Posts Per Day to 5 - 10 (but make sure key metrics don’t trend down)
  • Hire a Managing Editor to Take Over Your Role
  • Syndicate With Other Top Sites
  • Run a Contest
  • Expand to Paid Advertising
  • Use Retargeting to Bring Traffic Back
  • Buy Tweets to Raise Your Profile

Authority ROI This and That

Price

No, you don’t have to wait with baited breath just to be hit with a $2,000 sticker shock.

I was very pleased to see that Ryan Deiss has made Authority ROI very affordable: 3 X $97 payments or one-time $241 payment.

Upsells

Update on the upsells: the upsell was for a complete DONE-4-You Authority site build by Ryan’s team, hosted for a year, all his plugins, a $500 SEO package and $250 in Google Adwords advertising credits.

Now you can have HIS team build out YOUR authority property, AND get the entire AuthorityROI training for ONLY 3 x $97.

There are a few upsells to the training.

1. (see the update above) Ryan’s team will build your very own authority site using their tested themes, plugins, SEO tweaks - the whole nine yards - in a couple of days.

So yes, you CAN be well on your way to become a media mogul by the end of the week.

And the price? Extremely reasonable.

As a matter of fact, I don’t think I could find an outsourcer to do the same for me for anywhere close to the same price.

I am not even talking about the same amount of time…

2. DM Lab - Digital Marketers Lab is where Ryan shares the latest tested marketing knowledge, plus case studies, plugins, software he uses in his own business, etc.

I’ve been a member of DM Lab for a few months now and love the value I’ve been getting out of it.

3. Authority Index community - don’t have any first-hand experience to share with you, but the networking opportunities in this community sounds incredible.

Refund Policy

90 days guarantee.

This should give you plenty of time to check out Authority ROI for yourself.

Marketing Takeaway

If you are ready to take your business to the next level, that is turn it into an expert site in your niche and make it more profitable while you are at it, then Authority ROI is a good fit for you.

And if so, I’d appreciate it if you went through my personal affiliate link to purchase it.

Just stay away from my niche, would ya; the authority here has already been claimed! 😉

    Ana,

Would you say that an authority website will only bring revenue in the long term vis-a-vis a typical mini-site that has a sales funnel of a free product, a paid product and upsells, which brings more revenue, at least in the short term?

    Thanks!

Hard to say in theory, but I’d say that the longevity of quick aff sites is coming to an end with all Google’s latest changes. Yes, an authority site takes longer to develop, but it also has the best chance to survive long-term.

    Ana;

I have been attempting to make $ online for a couple of years now w/ little luck. I dove in head first to Authority ROI and have very much enjoyed the training. I really dug into Google analytics and confirmed my assumption, that my passion for craft beer could be a profitable niche blog. So far, it has been well worth it, and remember, there is a 90 day guarantee! Question Ana; They built my “4 pillars” based on my keyword research. They are not quite what I had in mind and not very interesting. Should I work within that framework, or change the Pillar topics?

    Thanx for your help

Sounds like a great niche to go for - there will always be demand for it. lol

I’d say it’s your site, so if you think you need to change the topics, you should go for it.

Remember, they are not the experts in your niche; you are.

So much of this really just goes to the basics in internet marketing or even getting a site up. But, what this program seems to do, is to take the basics, try to make it like into some kinda of super power or insider knowledge.

There’s basics to a net biz. First of all you need a valuable product or service. The net is just a marketing vehicle. Then you represent it well with a ‘good’ website (which in itself carries a lot of detail and technical expertise of what makes a website good). The website needs to found of course in search, and then to convert visitors to leads, and customers or buyers.

This program says you pay what? less than $300? and you get website, content, etc? jeez, it’s like a midnight infomercial. You have to have your own product/ service, and you are going to have to market it. Nothing wrong with hiring help, but even that’s going to have to be under your supervision, and editing of content.

So much I see on the net, is folks promoting some ‘formula’ to make this easy. It’s not easy. It takes work…lot’s of it. Lot’s of training, research, reading, many, many hours to invest.

If you want to make money just by blogging, well, good luck, you will be the vast exception to the rule. Ana is one of those exceptions. It’s part talent, skills, a desire to write, and a ton of time she put’s into TGC, every week.

For the masses, I’d say, have a blog as part of what you are promoting. ie your service, your product. If you think your writing skills and promotional skills are so good that you can survive on your sales from your blog affiliate links alone…well go for it… just be prepared, your chances are slim.

One last thought on the guru’s trainings… they make a ton of more money selling you their ‘how-to’ than they could actually sell an actual product or service, otherwise, they wouldn’t be doing it. And if they are saying that they are just ‘trying to help others’? hmm.. hey, they’ve made their millions… so they can’t afford to just post all info for free… c’mon people… these guys aren’t much different than late night infomercials.

p.s. ana I doubt this comment will get published, ha

I am a bit surprised that you spoke up again Authority ROI without ever checking it out, Tom; not a good practice, as you can imagine.

Of course, no one is talking about populating a site with content; just building one. For that, I’d pay $300 in a heartbeat. My post says that, as well as Authority ROI sales page.

Wow, you actually approved my comment! I did check it out! Weeks ago! I have over 20 emails from Ryan Deiss in my trash box right now, which I have received over the last few weeks!

Quite a few of those where my ‘last chance’, and how he’s closing it down… ha!

So, that’s probably best! Close it down before he gets more suckers in this program!

Right now as I’m writing this, I’m listening again to the video… it’s a lot of BS! Not to say there’s not some truth in some of the things that he say’s other people or businesses do, or did, but for him to take those things and say, ok, you pay us ‘x’ amount of money, and it’s all done for you….No… it doesn’t work like that, and I’m disappointed that you support something like this.

This was never advertised as a “done for you system”; I have no idea what you are talking about.

I recommended it because I actually bought it, looked at it, and recommended it based upon the value inside; NOT on the sales video.

First of all, I apologize to you Ana, for saying that I’m disappointed with you. I shouldn’t have let my perception of Ryan Deiss’s program become a personal reflection on you.

The video does come across very ‘salesey’ and hyped, and gives the perception that not only do you get a website, but that they will provide content also.

I’ll keep an open mind on this, and hopefully I am wrong in my perception. I am curious to hear of how many people that this actually worked for, and how many that paid, and it didn’t.

    Hi Ana,

Awesome, awesome, awesome review here. Once again you underscore the importance of community, and I admit, I ignored that one for a while, putting Bali a bit before business during my recent 2 month trip through Southeast Asia.

It is strange; when you think about it, this approach to building businesses makes perfect sense. Why do so many ignore it? Most people are not prepared to receive, process and use good advice, when they see it. It is a mindset thing.

If you are willing to act on the insight above, and think like a pro, and act like a pro, pro results follow.

    Thanks Ana,

    Hello Ana,

I have done a fair bit of research on Authority ROI and I’m still a little undecided. One of the nagging doubts I do have is related to one of Ryan’s authority sites which he mentions in his free reports http://www.survivallife.com. I randomly when through around 30/40 articles on the website and found that everyone was written by the same author- i.e. JOE. Isn’t this just what a typical blog is supposed to look like? And a blog which Ryan clearly highlights in his promo videos/report simply doesn’t work?

Most of my posts say “Ana Hoffman”, Rhod - I am not sure I am following your train of thought on this one.

I think that point here is that “Joe” was hired to write the posts; thus, Ryan uses leverage to populate his blog with good content, even though it’s not “signed” by authority bloggers.

I agree with Tom’s comments regarding Ryan’s products - overpriced. I am still trying to figure out where all the value is that cost money for the Kindle deal. It makes me reluctant to come out and jump onto his authority ROI bandwagon. For what I got out of the Kindle deal, he should throw this newest program in with it.

A recent Kindle publishing conference that I attended seemed to spend about one-third of the time or so promoting additional packages, rather than providing worthwhile Kindle publishing information, which was the reason that I drove about 900 miles to attend it. I probably would have got as much out of someone else’s set of CDs on the topic at far less cost than the $241 package.

I have an aversion to internet marketers who promote overly-hyped, information-deficient and time-wasting videos, and without even providing text options for those of us who can still read rapidly. It has been my experience that most internet marketers of alleged money-making programs are not completely honest in terms of fully disclosing all the costs of their programs up front - including upsell surprises after the initial purchase that are usually much higher than the initial investment, which was sold as being “all that is necessary to make profits” or some other such blather.

Subsequent upsells are touted as being necessary to “really make the program work well” or to “get into profit much quicker” or something similar.

Thanks if you care to respond to the above.

    Paul

What are the upsells and costs to the Authority ROI program? What are these supposed to do that the initial program won’t do? What are average monthly promotional costs and the like?

I got the initial email and because your name was associated with it, I looked at the video. I couldn’t figure where the traffic was coming from to generate this future business at ROI. Everything in blogging seems to revolve around quality content, commenting, guest posting and a few article submissions. I’m not opposed to spending money to grow a successful business. It just seems that all those other bases still have to be circled. ROI says the blogging model is broken. Well, o.k. I’m waiting for future updates.

This model comes down to who you associate yourself with, Jennifer.

I see it done a lot by websites that use interviews as their primary content strategy. The bigger the fish they bring in, the more traffic they get. Yet all they do really is let someone else create their content, plus use their sharing power to drive traffic to their sites.

Insightful, engaging, irresistable writng .. as always! To me you are the go-to person for quality traffic. I am on the fence here with this product.

I am in the Kristi Hines camp and swear by the “single author, uncluttered layout.” But that is not the biggest issue for me.

I have purchased a couple of Ryan’s products in the past. In a nutshell, while I do believe in atonement, and that our country tends to respond well to celebrities who admit their faults and wish to make a fresh start (e.g., former disgraced South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford and his surprising comeback momentum in the polls) I am conflicted when it comes to purchasing anything from Ryan.

I bring this up not to fan the flames of celebrity bashing (let’s face it, Ryan does have celebrity status in this industry) but rather to broach the wider issue of branding and brand loyalty/ brand poisoning.

What are effective strategies for brand rehab?

(Disclosure: both products of Ryan’s I purchased were way over-priced, 90% hype, 10% useful, and of that 10% — well, nothing new, info reeadily available if you look around, as was the case with his The Kindle Revolution).

Of course, to come out and say “Folks, I have made mistakes in the past, but I have seen the light, and ask for your forgiveness” would seem to = brand suicide in the IM world.

Still … some one like myself watching a clearly hypey product launch video by someone who has burned me — well, it just doesn’t work.

How can can ethical marketers skillfully move on and gain back lost trust? — that’s the question I would like to broach here.

In the spirit of open, honest sharing from a customer’s POV…

    Your loyal ravin’ fan…

However, if and when I decide to start a site in another niche, Authority ROI is the way I’ll take.

I didn’t get/promote his Kindle product, so I don’t really know much about it. And I appreciate you sharing your honest opinion about Ryan; there are always two sides to any story and it’s always up to us to choose which one to believe and act accordingly.

That’s why I always test the products for myself (whoever makes them) to make sure I know I am not recommending junk.

Well, I have personally seen the death of some good blogs because the owner was unclear about how to market their blogs and at the same time, I have seen some mediocre blogs making hell lot of money because they know how to promote their blog the right way.

What I personally feel is that unless you are developing a blog of the niche that you have actually worked for, you will find it tough to make that blog profitable.

Sounds like a combination of 2 principles being used online which is guest blogging and content curation! This approach seems much cleaner and a lot less fuss for the (authority) site owner!

    Clever, resourceful and very efficient!
    Warrants a closer look!
Thanx for the ‘heads up’ on this one Ana!

I am definitely all for less fuss, Terry. Can’t do it with Traffic Generation Café, but can certainly start anew with another site. And thank you!

Watched the video and have to say…. yes, that is just what I need. I am long overdue to build a new site and make something that is like yours. I have followed you for some time, and have grown to respect your posts, insights, and wisdom.

I think this is just what the doctor ordered….

Hey Ana, I watched this presentation today and I agree; it seems a good training program. I have some training from Ryan Deiss and he is really good, a little bit hype… beyond than he needs in my opinion, but that’s who he is.
I am not going to try this particular training, but it seems to be good and by the way… great review! 🙂
I followed Perpetual Traffic Formula in 2011 and it was not a bad product, so this new training can be good.
Thanks for sharing and take care Ana!

I find most big name marketers a bit hypey, Felipe, but then again, they are the ones who are making millions. 🙂

    Hi, Ana

I was quite interested in the program and its premise. But I did some research on the creator (something I always do if I’m contemplating drop more than $100 on something) and I was displeased to see all the complaints about Ryan on ripoff report and several other blogs.

I won’t shy away from a few complaints, because you really can’t please all the people all the time, but the amount I did find was a little too much for my taste.

Note: the complaints ran the gamut of several of Ryan’s programs and not specific to Authority ROI.

I’ve come to respect your blog and your insights greatly, so I’m undecided on this program. Has anyone else signed up and willing to offer an unbiased review?

    Thanks.

I understand your hesitation, KJ; it’s hard to commit to something when the water is so muddy.

As I mentioned in the post, I’ve been Ryan’s customer for over 2 years no, and purchased several of his courses. Some were perfect for my business, some weren’t the best fit, so I requested a refund and never had a problem with it.

I’ve never ever run into any problems with Ryan.

I hope someone else will chime it to let you know about their experiences, but in the end, you’ll have to make the decision.

Thanks for writing this. I downloaded the free report - thought it was interesting that I was going in the complete opposite direction than it suggested (single author, uncluttered layout, etc.). Then I was looking at the launch page and wondering if it was something I needed.

It looked like for a while there you were going in the media publisher direction, Kristi - you had more and more guest posts published. I assume a lot of it had to do with you having a new arrival in your family. 🙂

I am with you though: I always heard “clean layout”. If I noticed any particular link wasn’t clicked, I removed it; whether it was navigation, sidebar, footer, etc. But maybe, just maybe those extra links that were never clicked still served their purpose, i.e. made the readers click on other links more often.

      Do I make sense?

What I love about Ryan and his courses is the fact that he split-tests everything. It doesn’t mean that what works for his businesses would work for mine as well, of course, but the point is: we need to test instead of just taking someone’s word for it.

I am going to add a few more things to my “clean layout”; see how my conversions do.

        Yes, it did. 🙂

I guess the theory is that if there is a whole lot of stuff on a page, you get the impression that it has a lot to offer. Then people will take the time to dig through all of it vs. a clean layout that takes a few moments to scan and if people don’t see something they want, they head elsewhere.

It does make sense, doesn’t it?

It’s the times like this that I wish I knew more or had more time to learn about split testing. lol

Wow thanks for sharing this personal story Ana,

I find the authority path much better than the disposable affiliate one page sites.

Once you have the audience you’re in the best position possible.
You have options on how you can monetize can’t do that with no visitors.

    Hi Ana,
I’ve already download those books the last time i came here, although I’ve not read them but i’m sure they will also be great like his other books.

I’ve read his book on kindle publishing before and liked it a lot.

BTW: I love the infographic and would have loved to share it on my blog, how can i get the embeded code?

    Thanks for sharing.

That was a great infographic; I should’ve saved it, but now can’t find it. I know it’s on Pinterest; just couldn’t find under which profile, Theodore.

I am sure you can find it though.

That info graphics is superb. It clearly displays what you need to get in order to be successful.

It looks very similar to what Jon morrow says.

    Totally got the free reports.

Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
